Kosuke Fukudome would make a wonderful addition to our bench as a defensive specialist and pinch-runner. He may also be able to improve his hitting with some time spent in AAA.
NOTICE: The title of this post has been edited to placate some of our more sensitive readers.
When can we stop making excuses for this guy? He is a black hole in the lineup. There are better options on the bench (Derosa) as well as the AAA roster. Even if he goes on to hit .400 the last 3 weeks I already know I don't want him anywhere near the batter's box in a playoff game. What did he contribute during the recent losing streak? One nice catch and a bunt out that the 1B ump blew the call on giving him a hit. I'm sorry, but the contigency out there who still insist on giving this guy more chances are sounding a lot like the same people who kept telling us Dusty Baker wasn't the problem. Enough already!

Relax...
What did ANYONE do to contribute during this losing streak? He’s been turning it around a bit the past 2 weeks and he’ll be fine.

Patently false.
Kosuke’s line in June was .264/.387/.402 (.789 OPS, 113 OPS+).

I suspect that Dome will get plenty of rest in Sept.
(which is needed). Coming over from Japan has definitely caught up with him. He was paid for his track record, and I expect that, with some rest, he will get enough offense back in his bat, that he will be a solid contributor down the stretch. His defense is unmatched in the Cubs system. You may think that there are better options at AAA, but you are mistaken. Dubouis is not the answer, certainly not defensively, nor is Micah Hoffpauir. Dome has been turning it around the last couple of weeks with rest, he’ll be fine.

Great attitude!
Because when the going gets tough, what better way to approach the situation than take cheap shots at, and make baseless comparisons about (Dusty Baker = manager; Kosuke Fukudome = player), a guy who’s done nothing but bust his ass for this team.
Newsflash: No Cubs player has hit well in the last three games. Jim Edmonds is 1 for his last 12, and Soriano is 4 for his last 23. (CUT ‘EM FROM THE LINEUP!) And you’re conveniently and mistakenly ignoring Dome’s defense and ability to draw walks or at least advance runners (i.e., make productive outs).
Am I a little disappointed in how Kosuke’s season is turning out offensively? Yeah, I am. But I’m not giving up on the guy. And putting DeRo in right field indefinitely is not the answer anyway. I’d also really like to know who your Triple A solution for right field is. How ’bout naming some names?

LOL
Again, you seem to be completely ignoring the importance of an experienced, talented defensive outfielder. Jake Fox? Seriously? He’s played in seven major league games in his career and only three in right field. Mike Fontentot? God love him, but LBR has NEVER PLAYED IN THE OUTFIELD.
Lou flirted with the idea of putting Cedeno in centerfield and quickly abandoned the notion. I can’t believe he would ever seriously consider putting Ronny in right over Dome. That would be like putting Theriot over Cedeno at shortstop. (JOKE! Er, well, kinda.)
Felix Pie would at least put a good defender out there, but his natural position is centerfield and there’s no telling how quickly he’d adapt to right. And, offensively speaking, his bat wouldn’t necessarily be an upgrade over Dome’s. (Not that I’m suggesting Felix Pie might not someday be a reasonably productive major league hitter. Because I wouldn’t do that.)
Broussard has played 12 games in right field in his major league career – and I highly doubt he’s on the team’s radar in any serious regard. You’re really throwin’ a hail mary there and…it…lands…in the stands.

So what are you suggesting?
That Lou continue to platoon Johnson and Edmonds in centerfield and, on days when Edmonds is playing, RJ should play right field. In other words, play Reed Johnson every day?

How about DeRosa at SS and Fontenot at 2nd?
Past 14 days OBP/SLG:
Theriot .339/.314
Fukudome .326/.316
Season #s v. RHP OBP/SLG
Theriot .386/.366
Fukudome .360/.397
If you’re really going to upset the apple cart at this point (not something I’d suggest in either case) which move gives us a total better offense and defense?

Stay With Dome
I can see DeRosa getting spot starts against left handers in RF with Cedeno at 2B. Hoffpauir might start some games in right. Dome should be out there the majority of the time. I have seen signs the last couple of weeks that he hitting better. He’s not hitting as well as we would like but I have confidence he’ll hit well enough in September.

Yes, MLB is not the same as baseball in Japan...
the strike zone is diffrent, the season is much shorter, the players don’t train here like they do over there…
However, these are not reasons why Fukudome should be starting playoff games. These are excuses for why he is bad. He is not ready for MLB playoff games. Find a new solution while there is time. If Fukudome needs a month off before he can start hitting again it is already too late.

So long as we're doing this.
Last seven days:
Theriot: .208/.296/.250
Fukudome: .150/.320/.150
Their seasonal lines don’t exactly differ much, either – Theriot’s got a higher BA, Dome the higher walk rate and ISO power. It all comes out to roughly the same in the wash.
Then we can start arguing over whether or not a poor defensive shortstop is more valuable than a great defensive right fielder, all else being equal.

I just find it an interesting contrast.
The sort of people who dislike Ryan Theriot now have disliked Ryan Theriot pretty much since we figured out that the Cubs viewed him not as a stopgap following the Izturis debacle but as our shortstop of the future.
But from the larger fanbase as a whole, Theriot seems to get a pass while being arguable less productive than Fukudome on the whole. It’s… odd.

I don't think it is odd.....
Shortstop (historically) isn’t expected to be a huge offensive production type position. (Not saying he’s a great defender) I think most just expect more production from a corner outfielder as opposed to a middle infielder.

Beyond the name calling..............
I think Jerry has a somewhat valid point. Everyone keeps talking about how we should all calm down and the focus is on the playoffs, cut em brake etc etc. Well IF we do make the playoffs, the playoffs are just a month away. If Dome, D LEE , Edmonds, Sori don’t turn it around then we are in trouble. And then, will everybody in here still be saying cut em a brake. Right now, in a tight spot in game one of the playoffs, we don’t need Sori swinging at pitches three feet outside in the dirt, D Lee hitting week grounders to short, Edmonds watching fastballs down the middle, and Dome leaving the bases stranded again. So there is a point here.

Cubs Record against 500 teams in the NL
Ari: 4-2
LAD: 5-2
Mil: 6-4 (currently)
NYM: 2-0 (currently)
Phi: 3-4
STL: 5-4 (currently)
Marlins: 4-3
Houston: 6-7
That is a record of 35-26 agains teams over 500. You can’t take a sample size of a three to 5 games and extrapolate it out and say that is the norm. What I think you can take from it, is that a lot of our hitting is built around taking walks and working the counts and the situation in their favor. They last few games there have not been a lot of walks. When that does not happen, they are much more vunerable.
However, as the cardinals have proven, it is whoever gets hot at the right time will make the long playoff run.
Look, when you play a game where failing 7 out of ten times is consider a good performance, than you have to accept that there are going to be times when everybody sucks. You just have to hope that you suckage does not happen when it really matters.
