Bad News: Z to See Dr. about Arm
Sun-Times Says:
Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano complained of soreness in his right arm when he left his start early Wednesday night, throwing into doubt his status for the remainder of the season and postseason.
Read the whole thing HERE.
According to Lou, Z is hurt and will see a doctor on Wednesday.
What does this mean for Z?
What is best case scenario?
What is the worst case scenario?
Are you scared?
Does it matter that Z is missing?

Well first relax…it hasn’t been a good 4 games:
What does this mean for Z: Let the doctors tell him.
What is best case scenario: Obviously he would be fine.
What is worse case scenario: Let’s NOT go there right now.
Are you scared: Not yet. From day 1 I’ve atleast said they need to clinch, not win division. Magic # to get to October if I’m correct is 15. That’s doable with or without Z.
Does it Matter: Are you just trying to fill space in here?
As I said above, relax, wait for the news…Z is big to this team but he’s only going to pitch 1 of 3 games in October…we have players who need to play every game that month.

Honestly..
Don’t care a lick.
Dempster and Harden and Lilly can do the job.
Would I rather have Z? of course I would. But I don’t want the Z of the 6+ era of the month of august or the Z who doesn’t pitch well under pressure or adversity. I’d rather see a Z at full capacity handle some October work.
If that means giving him up for September, I’m good with it.

Let me explain further
Yes there was soreness in his arm. And he COULD have pitched but Z didn’t want to take any chances. I’m sure he’s had times he’s pitched through pain (as evidenced when he used to get cramps).

But this is the second time we’ve been through this with Z this year and let’s not forget we awaited for news like this many times with his “cramps” in the past.
Now of course they can be masking words or anything else but is soreness better than pain?

Soreness to me is better than shooting pain or throbbing or any other adjective
Sore can be rested/iced/treated… pain is bad.

If he has a tendinitis
They can give him a shot of Cortisone, sit him for two weeks and give him a start the last week of the season. If he feels okay, all systems go. If he is not, not on the playoff roster. You can’t rest him the entire month and burn a roster spot in the playoffs on a potential none contributor.

The point of the DL is to clear roster space from the 25-man roster. The roster limit has expanded to 40.

How so?
It’s still Manny Parra?
The Cubs aren’t the best team in the NL because of only their pitching. We’re a complete team. And I believe the Cubs can get to any starter they face this year. Z out shouldn’t hinder us from getting to the post-season (honestly my fear right now).
Z, Harden or Dempster can pitch the best game of their life in October but we still need to hit.

Ted Lilly or Carlos Zambrano

by nji232 on Sep 3, 2008 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Obviously Z
But if The Cubs can hit any pitcher around I truly believe it shouldn’t matter if Lilly or Z pitches that game.
So Z could be dominant Zambrano and if The Cubs don’t get a hit, it wouldn’t matter.
I know the counter argument, what if we have someone like Marquis out there and he gives up 6 runs. That would be awful.
However in all seriousness, let’s just clinch October any way possible before worrying about this. We have to win 15 to guarantee if Philly wins every game for rest of the year. Realistically we need to win maybe 12 or 13 in September to clinch. Let’s just do that.

…the Big Unit did have a 2.45 ERA over six starts in August with a 47:6 K/BB ratio. I’m not necessarily disagreeing with MDBNIU that the D’Backs have a formidable starting rotation; I’m just sick of him harping about it and assuming that none of us here recognize the challenge Arizona would present in the playoffs. Ha, I also just noticed that he called Brandon Webb “Brendan.”

Yeah
The thing about the Big Unit is that he has little spurts like that, where he regains some kind of youthful vigor, and all the ESPNs fawn over him. Look he’s a decent veteren pitcher, but he does not invoke the fear that some try to attribute to him. Of course if I met him I would never say this…to his face.

Whose this "Danny" Haren
Its Dan Haren…… as someone whose been called “Mikey” I hate that unneccessary addition of the y at the end of a name.
Anyway.
Zambrano has been awful his last few starts. 6 plus ERA and the St. Louis and Pittsburgh games were downright terrible. This leads me to believe that his “tired arm” was something a little bit more then we were first lead to believe.
But Consider this: Other Contenders are having issues with ACE type pitchers Boston has had a problem with Josh Beckett and Ben Sheets had a groin issue with Milwaukee.
While im not jumping off the ledge YET and let me say that I see good things for this team, the Loss of Zambrano is not as bad as say a loss to Soto, Soriano or Aramis.
Remember this fact even if the worst happens and we lose our lead in the division, We’d STILL have a wild card to fall back on and better still if that happens we’d face someone OTHER then D-Backs in the first round.
BTW: We have beaten Haren already this season.

I'm not sure this is even possible right now.
Wouldn’t they have to send Samardzija back down to Triple A to stretch his arm out? And how could they do that with the Iowa team in its postseason right now?
Plus, I’m just not crazy about taking a guy who’s essentially been pitching late-inning relief and suddenly making him a starter. I know this analogy isn’t perfect, but it reminds me too much of what the Yankees did with Joba. Sean Marshall is a good No. 5 guy who’s been pitching as a long man/spot starter all season and appears much more suited for a quick transition back into the rotation.

Shark was a starter most of this season. The “stretching out” period may not be that long. Plus, better try it now when there is a 4.5 game lead than suddenly if Z goes down.
Maybe not though. I have been curious about his ability to be a starter since he was called up.

…but not because of the need to stretch him out. To me, it looks as though Jeff needs to master his other pitches to go through the lineup more than once.

In Brenly’s oberservance the Shark operates with only two quality pitches right now. If that is the case (and I have not watched him intently enough on my own to know) then he’s not starting pitcher material at this level. Yet at least.

There is also the factor of losing a our third strong arm out of the pen.
