Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

So the magic number is now 1

I know tomorrows game is on fox...BOOOOOOO!  IF the Cubs win tomorrow they will clinch the NL cent!!!  I really want to see them win tomorrow and they know that they will have the the NL Cent title for the 2nd year in a row.  BUT seeing how the game is on fox I doubt we will see the post game celebration.  I just want people to voice in on these ideas I am going to list:

Do you pitch big Z the rest of the season or rest him?

What do you do with D Lee, Dome, Soto, DeRo, Fonz, A-ram?  Rest or play for 3-5 innings?

How do you play your starting pitchers?

Start the shark?

Let some guys go 3-4 innings starting and put someone in for a few then play one per inning?  Just give guys some work?

Just throwing some ideas out there, please voice your thoughts.

GO CUBS!!!!!!!  THIS I A SEASON TO REMEMBER FOR A LONG TIME!!

As a added note I would like to thank Al for his hard work to this site and everthing he has done!  I check in on this site alot at work to see what people say and sometimes make a post.  I would also like to give props to some people on here I like to see post; SWL, Hammer, Santoone, halfblindecubbiegirl, sue, ivy walls, cubswgnforever, fukumeter (and the ffb league), emeile, drew and anyone else I left out...THANKS EVERONE!!!!

IF the Cubs clinch tomorrow there will....

DEFINITELY be coverage on Comcast Sportsnet Chicago.

DeRosa: And who is the best and who is the worst card player?

Dempster: I think the best is yourself. [ . . .] I think the worst player is D-Lee. I think he bets every time just to bet.

FOX, huh? So are we're talkin Midwest region only?

what chance do Cub fans such as myself have of seeing the game down here in South Florida?

by BigDcubbie on Sep 20, 2008 5:58 AM CDT reply actions

Unfortunately, probably none...

… since the Rays/Twins game is one of the others. But “check local listings”.

Right.

But that one won’t be on in South Florida.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just checked and my local cable company is showing the reds/brewers game. Am I right in assuming that the Cubs game will be blacked out in MLB.tv but I can get the radio feed?

Yes

Radio broadcasts are not subject to blackout until the WS.

last year

WGN (The Superstation) broke into whatever programming they had on when the Brewers lost their game that clinched it for the Cubs… so I would bet they will do it again this year… even if the game is on FOX.

by MillsChC on Sep 20, 2008 6:38 AM CDT reply actions

And...

… if the Cubs are about to clinch, I would guess that all the Fox stations will also cover it.

Hatred for the Armed Forces Network… showing NO baseball this evening. I can watch Notre Dame attempt but miserably fail to play division one football… I can watch florida/tennesee… I can even watch a SNL rerun or CNN programming. But no playoff race baseball!!!!!!!

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKFULLY…. KABB San Antonio is showing the game, and I have a friend with a slingbox set up, so all hope is not lost!

Cubs should celebrate big time!!!!!

I am glad that the Cubs lost yesterday, otherwise they would have a passive clinch. Now they can beat the Cards and celebrate at Wrigley with all the fans! It will be great. I also agree that this will be a great time for the cubs to rest and practice for the playoffs. regulars to start, others to fill in the late innings. Home field advantage throughout will be to our advantage. Too bad about the all-star game.

by BCB Vienna on Sep 20, 2008 7:50 AM CDT reply actions

That All-Star game is looking big.

I didn’t give it much thought when the AL when, but that could really have an impact if the Cubs get “there”.

I don't know about you...

but that first five game series can always be difficult. You run into hot starting pitching, you don’t get timely hitting, etc…

Let’s not start posting about home field advantage in the WS series when we haven’t even clinched the division yet (hopefully today), but more importantly, we haven’t won one game or play-off series yet.

I think you keep your regulars on the field

for most of the remaining games, but give certain guys days off here and there, depending on the situation. Can’t let that rust start forming…

Once we have home field advantage clinched, then you play Cactus League style and get some work for your long relievers and bench players IMHO.

With apologies to Robert Frost.

Some say the clinch will come by Win,
Some say by Gift.
Because I like the room to spin,
I’ll raise my glass and cheer them, “Win!”
But since the Reds are back in fifth,
I think that I would be okay
To take the Brewers’ loss as Gift
Since either way
I won’t be miffed.

Rotations etc

Since I have sort of a rotation obsession let me say Cubs MUST keep the starters on more or less the same schedule as now. There is very little room for change or spot starts. Pitchers NEED to be on regular rotation, yes it was nice Z pitched a no hitter on 12 days rest but not something you want to plan. It is possible Z might be asked to go on THREE days rest in the post season and you sure as hell don’t wa nt his first post season start to be on 10 days rest. With NO changes in the rotation Z will pitch Wed in NYC and Open the Division series the following Wed, that is two extra days rest and more than enough, Dempster will start the Friday in Milwaukee and could pitch either Thursday or Sat depending on where Harden is. Harden would go Tuesday and then either following Thursday or Sat. Since he apparently can use the rest , this is probably OK. Lilly goes today and Thursday so is more than availalble. Anyway long of way of saying you can maybe change starts by a day but I don’t see any big upside there I don’t see any good place for a spot start except the last game of the year because I think Marquis needs to be kept in rotation too. One important thing though is that I would probably keep them on pinch counts of 90 max.

Everyday guys should get some more rest in late innings but again you should not overest guys.

Regarding today , so far everything has come done as I wanted it, even with my EVIL desire for the Cubs
to lose on Wed. This SHOULD be my 3rd straight time at a clincher though I admit last year was cheating as
they did not clinch till the Brewers lost that night but I was in Cinci.)

cubs

imj jumping ahead here but a 2nd division title in sight is just a great thing.hendry has done some good things but bringing in pinella was the best.a mgr who wont tolerate the cub player,s lazy habits like dusty did.we,ll either be playing the phillies or mets so getting past the 1st round will be quite a challenge. let,s hope the cubs from lat year,s postseason dont show up.how romantic would it be to see the cubs win on the 100th year
