The "IF I told you in Spring Training" 2008 Thread
I bascially decided that it would be fun to have a thread that shows the achievements of the Cubs this year that you NEVER thought would have happened. I mean a bunch of intresting and unusual things occured this season for the Cubs. I'll start. Would you have believed me in Spring Training that:
1) On the final game of the season at Wrigley, the despised Jim Edmonds of the Cardinals would become a Cub hero and the fans would stand to honor him?
2) Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds would be our platoon for Centerfield, not Felix Pie and Sam Fuld?
3) Ryan Theriot would finish the season close to hitting .300 and stay healthy most of the season?
4) Bob Howry would be virtually useless throughout the season?
5) We don't need Brian Roberts?
6) Soriano would be injured for two months and STILL hit 30 HR?
You Continue!

Ryan Dempster would win 17 games ( at least)
and be our best and most consistant pitcher. That is easily #1 for me.

absoutely on Dempster
Dempster’s success is by far the biggest surprise to me. On a team with really no individual player having a “career” year, with Dempster as the only exception.

With no real standouts, Dempster is this team's MVP.
There are so many contributors to our success, but I can’t imagine losing Dempster for the entire season and winning the division. Can you?
Without Demp’s domination, we probably don’t trade Gallagher, and instead rely on Marshall. Our bullpen would be even more overworked and we would have lost many more close games.
That said, I could probably make the same case for DeRo, ARam, Soto, Woody, Marmol, the Edmonds/Reed platoon, Sori, etc. Can’t imagine games without any of them.

that Ryan Dempster was going to be our most consistent pitcher and could even get some considerations for possible a possible Cy Young candidate

Although I did think he’d be a better starter than a reliever. But I was more thinking 13-12 with and ERA around 4.00.

I was worried about his stamina...
… having not started in five years, and his walks. Neither one has been an issue. Dempster’s been great. He won’t win the Cy Young, but he may get a vote or three.

I don't recall it ever looking likely that Fuld would make the team.
He was a long shot in spring training and never really seriously competed with Pie there. Also, you seem to imply in your fanpost that a Pie/Fuld platoon was considered, and I’m fairly certain that never happened either.

If I told you:
we’d lost Z for nearly 6 weeks w/ shoulder trouble.
Soriano for 6 weeks with a broken hand.
Woody w/ a blister.
Dempster as your constant starter.
And that we’d win the division by 10 games in mid Sept. Would you have ever believed that?

I was gonna say Dempster, but...
Who would have figured that Soto would perform the way he has and potentially win rookie of the year?
Who would have guessed that it was a colaborated effort by all- not just one player with bloated stats- but all players with “average stats”?
Would would have thought Piniella would not be ejected more than he has?
Who would have thought that we would have at least 4 pitchers that would be a #1 on any other team?
Who would have thought that we’d get so close to the walk record? Never thought these guys would be so patient!

Lots of surprises during this magical season...
I never expected Geo to be so good, so soon. I didn’t have a lot of faith in Wood as a closer. On the other hand, I felt very confident that Fukodome would be an impact player.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, “what do I know anyway?”.
by bluekoolaide on Sep 21, 2008 7:06 PM CDT 0 recs
I think Dome has been an impact player
in that he’s helped shape the team, and he’s one of those quiet “lead-by-example” types when he’s being very patient at the plate.
He hasn’t had the impact on the box-scores we’d like, but I think that will happen.

Everything's been pretty much covered above.
Remarkable that even with all the strange things happening, not only did the Cubs win, but did so going away, easily.

How about this...
Not only did the Cubs win, but going away, easily – despite the fact that the Brewers traded for (and got one hell of a half-season out of) CC Sabathia, and both the Cardinals and Astros were surprise playoff contenders.

That's not too surprising...
and I know it’s not a valid indication of skill as CC has been tremendous for Milwaukee so far, but he’s played some pretty iffy competition. In order: COL, CIN, SF, STL, Cubs, ATL, WASH, SD, HOU (before their run), 2x PIT, SD, CIN, Cubs, CIN.
He hasn’t seen the Mets, Phillies, Marlins, Dodgers or Diamondbacks before their recent struggles.

but if you told me Yost would have the Brewers in contention and still be fired, I wouldn’t have believed it.
I just keep wondering when that’s going to come back for them. I mean, by all accounts, there’s going to be a significant talent loss this offseason up there, and seeing how short term, what have you done for me recently memory works, if they are nowhere near contention next year, do the people who are happy to see him gone turn and say it was a terrible move?

Answers below:
1) The way it’s worded “No” but I think the real story here is not the play of Jim edmonds with the Cubs, it’s the intense dislike that apparently many Cubs fans have/had for a guy who is really a solid competitor who did have just enough left in his tank to help this team.
2) “No” because I had no idea we would sign Edmonds then.
3) “Yes” but this is the way it’s worded. He’s really tanked at the end, like he did before.
4) “yes” Howry has been one of the most heavily used RPs in the game the past few years, eventually it catches up, especially to guys on the wrong side of 30.
5) “Yes”
6) "No’ but if you told me 25 I’d totally believe that.

Hey, we called meetings for the Jim Edmonds Fan Club at lest four times here
I think we finally saw a lot of the bitterness finally dissolve into acceptance. It was tangible in the threads.
There’s going to be a few hard liners and purists in any group, but I think Cub fans globally have accepted the Jimmy Ballgame era ..
It wasn’t a wasted time this year. Cub fans were extremely generous and supportive. At last count, the Jim Edmonds Fan Club numbered something like 541,092, there were a couple of scholarships to NW’s medical school being sponsored, adoption of endangered species being housed at Lincoln Park Zoo had begun and a charity roast of Lee Elia and Dusty Baker will be held at his restaurant in mid November, with Mr. Dempster emceeing.

My personal list goes as follows...
If you’d have told me the following statements six months ago I’d have never believed you…
…that Jeff Samardzija would have played a somewhat significant role for the actual Cubs, rather than the I-Cubs.
…that Michael Wuertz would get demoted to the I-Cubs after being a fairly solid reliever for the Cubs the last few seasons.
…that a highly touted (and personal favorite) prospect would twist a testicle, need surgery and still start the season with the Cubs. Seems like that kind of thing should require more time off.
I agree with most of the other ones posted, just wanted to add my own list.

Every year...
..is filled with stuff you never could have predicted, and that is what makes this game as beautiful as it is.
All in all, Dempster becoming a top flight starter has to be number one to me in regards to a player who has stepped up above and beyond what most thought he could deliver. Also, I have been impressed with Soriano and his ability to still put up big numbers and also to avoid those long long drawn out slumps that streaky hitters can go into. Lastly, Reed Johnson and Fukudome have been a great stabilizing force to the club.
Keep that pitching going, and if you can give us an Edmonds and Fukudome who can contribute offensively in the post-season, I like their chances.

1. Yes I would have believed you, but I would have been upset that Pie wasn’t given the chance I thought he should have gotten. But it would not have surprised me to see Hendry go out and get a veteran.
2. My belief that Sam Fuld is not a major league ballplayer is well-known, so I wouldn’t have been surprised there. I’d have been more “disappointed” that Pie wasn’t playing. I did think that the Cubs would have gotten a platoon partner for Pie, so Johnson wouldn’t have surprised me.
3. Theriot’s play the first five months of the season has been a little surprising. His play the past month has been too, only the other way.
4. Howry had a pretty good stretch in May and June. But I’m never shocked when a 34 year old reliever loses it.
5. Never thought we needed Brian Roberts. Never really understood that one.
6. OK, this one would have been a little unbelievable. Soriano’s numbers when healthy have been the best of his career. I guess I would have believed you, but I’d have been very, very surprised.
Now here’s my turn:
1. That Jeff Samardzija would play a significant role down the stretch in the bullpen? I wouldn’t have believed that.
2. That Geovany Soto outperformed Jorge Posada? I’m probably going to lose the BCB roto league because I was all set to draft Soto, and then I realized Posada was still on the board. I said to myself “Man, I love Soto, but what are the odds that he’s going to out-hit Posada?” So I took Posada. It’s going to cost me a shot at the title.
3. That Mark DeRosa would hit 20 HRs? Never would have believed that.

Lieber should get a share
but Fox pitched only three innings all year. That would be incredibly generous and loyal of the players to include a guy like that. You’d have to think Angel Guzman, Randy Wells, Koyie Hill and Casey McGeehee would also get shares then. Does Rich Hill get a cut?

It's voted on by the players.
So they get to decide for themselves. Generally, players are very generous with their teammates. Michael Barrett got voted a partial share last year. I suspect the callup guys, and Fox, and Hill, will all get partial shares.

Remember that...
…even though Fox wasn’t on the field much, he was in the dugout a lot. I’m not saying his presence there had a material effect on the field, but the players may view Chad as having been a positive force behind the scenes. Same thing with Lieber.
