Does anyone else hate the term "Cubs Nation"??

Recently in the last few days, both on ESPN and from the mouth of some Cubs management, I have heard them referring to the Cubs fan base as a "Nation".  A fan base, yes. A post-imperial, till-death-do us part following, yes. But "Nation"? isn't this the term used for decades by the Red Sox. The Red Sox Nation. But this limited to the north east USA, thereby interstate, but geographically united. Cubs fans are nationally and internationally located, connected not by time, geography or statehood, but by an unfillable love and respect of the Chicago Cubs. Yes, it is true that most fans have some roots or connection to the Chicago area. Many more, through there Radio and Television network WGN. But no not trivialise out following but referring it so some off-shoot of Red Sox nation.

I for one, applaud the idea of getting our own term. Be it Kingdom of Cubs, the Cubs Republic, etc. I dont know, but please not "the Cub nation". Hate it.

thanks in advance for your comments.

Eh.

It doesn’t bother me. Terms like that, dubbed by the national media, don’t make us anything that we aren’t already.

We know who we are. That’s what’s important. We don’t need a name.

Cubdom, Cubs Land, Confines,

It is the virtual world of the 21st Century. Out here in the hinterland at the edge where the Midwest has become the West or Rocky Mountains, I am a Cub Fan.

I don’t care how the media frames their presentation of what I know. When we win the World Series I will have friends new and many old.

I think they could do better

Cubs Nation has been done to death “Red Sox Nation” I heard all the time in MA. Marketing team could have been a little more creative coming up with their fan base name.

They use that term down here.

I hate hearing Cardinal Nation. Almost as much as I hate hearing them call themselves “the Best Fans in Baseball.” Makes me want to puke.

I recall when the Oakland Raider fans called themselves "Raider Nation" in the early 80s

I like their new fanbase name: the “Black Hole.”

Don't Hate, But Dislike

I’d like to reserve the “nation” references for Native American tribes. Having taken a trip to Oklahoma this summer where Native American tribes were relocated during the Trail of Tears, I have a healthy respect for “Cherokee Nation” and the other tribes that have endured so much over many generations.

I’m not up in arms about the terms “Red Sox Nation” and “Cubs Nation”. I just don’t think it’s appropriate to use for the fans of sports teams.

Agreed with the dislike above.

“Nation” is a Red Sox term and therefore not acceptable for Cubdom. Please break news to ESPN that the Cubs are not the Red Sox and dislike any comparison.

Please also disregard any title drought and memorable stadium that may make comparisons desirable. The similarity ends there. The Cubs play major league baseball with day games, pitchers batting, and acknowledge the salary cap.

by N Oakley on Sep 22, 2008 9:07 AM CDT   0 recs

Agreed with N Oakley

There is a quote from Ben Affleck that bothers me. He said “The Cubs are the new Red Sox.” Which leads me to believe that the Red Sox are for whatever reason “first”. Bah. Stuff like this just makes me really dislike the Red Sox, which is unfortunate, because I used to be a Red Sox supporter. And to hell with ESPN and their never ending east coast bias.

by Neifi Puppy on Sep 22, 2008 9:43 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Considering this is a term from the early 80s (see "Raider Nation")

it’s not fair to consider this a “Red Sox” term.

Even Janet Jackson had an album called “Rhythm Nation 1814” released in the late 80s.

"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."

I don't see what's wrong with that, really

I think you are reading way too much into that quote. Yes, there are plenty differences, but when you are talking about a perennial loser becoming successful and taking on tons of new fans nation-wide, he’s correct. It happened to the Red Sox first.

The Red Sox fan base seems to have adopted the term as their own, even to the

point of having shirts and other items emblazened with the “nation” term. I agree that is a a generic term and the universal appeal of the cubs overruns such a limiting term. I just kind of ignore it.

The delusional capacity of east-coast fans never ceases to amaze me

I grew up in Milwaukee/Chicago, and now I’m out in Boston for grad school. I NEVER saw Red Sox hats in IL/WI, but I always see Cubs hats out here in Boston (at least 3-4 a week). That being said, Red Sox fans genuinely believe that the Red Sox are the most popular team in the country, and have the most fans. I’m not saying that the Cubs are necessarily the most popular team (Yankees may take that honor), but from empirical evidence, it’s certainly not the Red Sox. But try telling that to a Boston-ite, and whoo boy, look out.

------ TheRiot Squad ------

by RightFieldSucks on Sep 22, 2008 12:04 PM CDT   0 recs

Part of the reason for the number of Cubs hats in Boston

is due to it being a college town/city. With all the schools out there, more kids from around the country head to Boston (I went to BC from Indianapolis). The population of Boston at least doubles from August-May with the college kids.

Now, that delusional capacity is part of the reason I came back to the Midwest. They take their ‘Nation’ thing quite seriously, which is unfortunate.

Very true.

Based on my experience, it’s far easier to find a Cubs fan in Boston than a Red Sox fan in Chicago.

It could be that so many East Coasters never leave the coast, where as Chicagoans move around a bit more.

by neverAcquiesce on Sep 22, 2008 12:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The Red Sox are

a damn popular team though. The Yankees certainly have the most fans nationwide though. Red Sox are probably second and we’re probably a close third—although a World Championship or two would likely make us closer.

Remember, most fans are just bandwaggoners. The Yankees pick up all kinds of fans because of their exposure and all their championships. But in the 1980s, the Mets actually challenged the Yankees for nationwide popularity. But two world titles can’t compete with 26, especially when the last one was twenty years earlier.

The Dodgers were probably the most popular team in America from the early 60s (after the Yankee Dynasty collapsed) to the mid-70s. Growing up, guys like Garvey, Sutton, Cey and Lopes were on TV all the time. So my point is, these things change.
