Playoff Tickets

I was hoping we could keep this thread running with people who signed up for the lottery on cubs.com.  I submitted my info and they said that at some point between yesterday and today they would be sending out an e-mail if you have been selected.  I just want to know when they start to go out so I can stop checking my e-mail and hoping by some miracle chance I was one of the few selected to purchase playoff tickets.

Good luck to everyone who registered, hopefully the ticket broker route isn't the way I have to go for this.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

On a related note

Does anyone have a link to the playoff schedule, with any details on start-times, TV networks and the like? I realize the finer details maybe can’t be worked out until the teams are all known. But I thought I read something a few weeks ago about how three of the four division series will start on the same day — just wondering if that means one of them could feature a day game? I know there won’t be any day games in the LCSs or WS, but I recall the occasional day game in the first round.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

No start times have yet been announced...

… and probably won’t be until all the teams and matchups have been set, and that may not be till next weekend.

It is POSSIBLE that one of the first two Division Series games MIGHT be a day game, but it’s too early to know that for sure.

Either that or the games will overlap

if all three of them are night games. I’ll just sit tight. Chances are the Cubs will face an East Coast team in the first round, which means the games shouldn’t be on too late.

It’s TBS for the NLDS, ALDS and ALCS. Fox has the NLCS and WS. Here’s the dates for the first round (no times yet):

Oct. 1 (on TBS): Game 1 of both NL series; game 1 of Al series between two division champions
Oct. 2 (on TBS): Game 2 of both NL series; game 1 of Al series between division champion and wild-card team
Oct. 3 (on TBS): Game 2 of both AL series
Oct. 4 (on TBS): Game 3 of both NL series
Oct. 5 (on TBS/TNT): Game 4 of both NL series; Game 3 of both AL series
Oct. 6 (on TBS): Game 4 of both AL series
Oct. 7 (on TBS): Game 5 of both NL series
Oct 8 (on TBS): Game 5 of both AL series

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

Note that there are three games scheduled on BOTH of the Cubs' home game dates.

Thus, there is at least a chance that one might be a day game.

The Cubs might also wind up with a day game on Oct. 5 on the road, if the series goes to four games.

I heard that TBS gets to choose who plays in prime time

Chances are that the Cubs will be playing night games (prime time).

The team with home-field advantage hosts Games 1, 2 and 5, so I suspect the Cubs to play Wednesday, Oct. 1 and Thursday, Oct. 2, at Wrigley during prime time against the NL Wild Card team (unless it’s the Brewers, Astros, or Marlins).

In the AL, I suspect the Rays will be getting the non-prime time.games.

Depends who the other host teams are on those days.

If the Mets win the NL East they’ll also host games 1 and 2… they might get one of those games at night. Same thing if the Red Sox win the AL East.

Won the Phillies lottery

I got an e-mail from the Phillies today notifying me that I won their NLDS lottery.

The e-mail had a link, registration number and PIN.

The link took me right to NLDS home game 2. (No option to buy game 1.)

There was no waiting room or delay time at all. Scored three outfield tickets right away.

Ticket Prices at the park

Would you say that the cost of tickets as going on stubhub are a good indicator of what one might pay outside of the ballpark?

stubhub

I find that tickets on stubhub are much more then what you can find on say craigslist or outside the park.

NO

Stubhub is an offer price not a bid price.

Ebay is a bid price, not an offer price. If you follow a few auctions to the end you can get a gauge for what the value of tickets is.

Outside the park is a crap shoot. Typically, you can get better pricing than ebay, BUT it is a supply and demand thing so you never know. If you are coming into town, I would recommend ebay. If you live near the park and can live with not getting a seat and watch from a bar, that is the way to go. Otherwise, ebay.

For what it is worth, I got two bleacher tickets on ebay, coincidentally right next to my season tickets, for game 3 last year for $300 each.

Better online ticket source

You should check out NinjaTickets.com. They aggregate available tickets from StubHub and like 6 or 7 other online ticket sources all onto one page, and they list the tickets by market value of the ticket as well. In other words, if it pulls two tickets priced the same for a playoff game, it will list the ticket located in a better seat first because it deems that to be the “better” market value.

This will suck for me if my girlfriend gets the lottery email. With the two-ticket limit, I would have to fly her up to Chicago so that the daughter and I can watch a playoff game while she shops the Magnificent Mile.

Going on last year's playoff tickets

Last year, I was lucky enough to get one ticket via the virtual waiting room.

Unfortunately, we never made it to the NLCS. I was shut out of the NLDS.

In 1998 I scored 46 tickets for the one game playoff

Was in school in Champaign, IL and as soon as Neifi went yard, I sprinted down to the local ticketmaster with a HUGE envelope of ill-gotten cash we had in the apartment.

Ended up 6th in line (a lot faster than, sigh) and the guy behind the counter said he was just going to keep printing out tickets until the game was sold out, and THEN he’d sell them. Genius.

Max 8 per person … so I worked the line and bought the difference from each person in line. Ended up with 46, and a bunch of people pissed at me at the end of the line. Took 30 friends for free, sold 16 and made all my money back and bought a stereo system.

And THEY WON!

"People like me"

I was a 22 year old kid grateful to be able to take his friends to a Cubs playoff game. I cried when Trachsel struck out Barry Bonds looking to end the first inning as the Harry! Harry! Harry! blimp flew above the left (?) field bleachers.

If I had 16 more friends to take, I wouldn’t have made a dime. it was that, or throw the tickets away.

Just lamenting what a long way we’ve come from the days random fans had a decent shot at seats.

Tim

by ttagaris on Sep 22, 2008 12:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

my point was

you didn’t have to make a dime – you could have turned around and sold them to other decent fans and just recouped what you spent on them and not had to make enough to extra to take 30 people for free and buy a stereo.

Seriously

No reason to feel guilty about that at all. Its a great story. Had you not been so lucky, Cubbieble 86 STILL would not have been able to go because 100,000 other people were trying to do the same thing. I remember running to my local Dominick’s with a ticketmaster only to be 40th in line and find I had no shot.

We are blessed and cursed with an enormous fan base for our favorite team. if you cheered for the Braves in their heyday, you could easily get playoff tickets for at or near face value. As a Cubs fan, you have to hope to get supremely lucky or pony up some serious dough.

You are absolutely spot on about playoff tix in other markets

I saw a few when I lived in Atlanta and did not break my wallet.

I saw a World Series game in Florida (Marlins/Yankees) that was given to me by a friend.

I want to see how the Rays do with selling out playoff tickets this year. They did not sell out the last Red Sox regular season series.

I was on the phone at the payphone of a gas station for an hour...

I remember waiting on hold forever, and finally getting 4 SRO tickets. The background music for those on hold was Janet Jackson’s “Velvet Rope” promoting her live shows or something.

That game was so freaking cold.

I think those prices are very accurate

If you hustle, you will find bleacher tickets for first round games cheaper than that. I paid $300 each for a pair in the third row of left field for game three last year.

OT: Cubs in series could be worth $100M to city; Sox, $72M

A World Series featuring the Chicago Cubs could generate almost $100 million for Chicago’s economy, while the Chicago White Sox making the Fall Classic would pull in an estimated $72 million, according to a study by a local turnaround consultant.

I am a proud member of a group that baits the scammers by making them think we’re falling for it.

I got one thinking I was the high priestess for the Church of the Holy Sacrifice Fly.

by cubstoseriesby100 on Sep 23, 2008 7:49 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I read about that group - well done

I had one scammer say he wanted to buy my living room furniture which I had advertised on a local website. He said he was in London (I live in Ireland, several hundred miles away) but his IP address was an Internet cafe in Nigeria. I just strung him along and said as soon as he gets to my town, he can come to my house and show me the money. I’m sure the scam would have involved bank account numbers and money transfers…..never got that far because I kept saying “come to my house”….

But it got me interested in the topic and I saw the website of the scam busters group – pretty funny (as well as civic minded) stuff!

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

I remember back in 1989

Tickets went on sale either Saturday or Sunday morning for the playoffs and my buddy and I called Ticketmaster for like four hours and never got through in the morning. Back then you could order up to 6-8 tickets per call. We then had to go to that buddy’s dad’s wedding in the afternoon. So we are sitting out there at the reception feeling all sorry for ourselves and some guy we didn’t know said there was a backdoor Ticketmaster number and he said he got through 10 times in a 30 minute period. He gave us the #, we ran out to our parents car and grabbed the massive car phones and started dialing. We got through 15 times and ended up with tickets to every single game through the World Series. We missed the entire reception but since the groom was huge cubs fan he was all in favor. Sadly many of those tickets were never needed.

But it was a great ticket memory. I’m guessing the back door # has been closed

Honestly,

my friend, it’s us that need to let it go.

The Astros were a so-so team this year, who hit a nice peak, and convinced their fans that they were better than they were. They did have some momentum going, we killed it — whatever the details — and whatever chance they had at the playoffs is gone. The casual fan is not going to understand the manuevering and posturing by the Astros ownership, and the Astros themselves are still dealing with delusions of grandeur, so it’s just not worth getting into.

Bottom line, they ain’t making the playoffs and nothing we say is going to stop them or their fans from blaming us and the big, bad commish, who wants to see a Cubs World Series for ratings sake.

I keep refreshing my email and this page, in case someone mentions in here that they got an email.

A 4AM box office campout on the day of game? Bribing a ticketmaster employee?

By looking at Stubhub....

…..it appears I am going to have sell my house and become homeless. I’m already starting to resign myself to watching the whole thing on TV. That wouldn’t be so bad if Len and Bob were calling the game. How cool would it be if the station with broadcast rights, hired both teams to call each game and put them on alternate channels?

My boss tells me that he firmly believes, that a ticket to any sporting event in America can be bought a few minutes after it starts for near face value. His theory is that the scalpers always get too greedy and end up holding on to a few tickets when there is almost no demand left for them. I’m not sure I buy that, but I may end up flying to town and trying that out. Worst case, I end up spending the night on Sheffield taking in the sounds.

That's true during the regular season...

But last year scalpers still wanted big bucks even after the game started. Granted, not as much as before the game, but still too rich for my blood nonetheless.

Stop believing your boss. Most professional scalpers have purchased a bunch of tickets and make their money back before the first pitch is thrown. They have no reason to feel charitable

and many will keep any extra tickets in their pockets rather than sell them at below face value. Many of them don’t even attend the game so they feel no pressure to get into the park when the game starts. You may get lucky with a fan with an extra ticket, but don’t bet the farm on it.

He's be wrong....

Premier events in the largest media markets never work out that way. They’re often sold in advance for a high premium, and the few that brokers and scalpers are left with just get eaten as a cost of doing business.

Maybe you get lucky and pay three or four times face after a couple of innings, but realistically they’ll all be gone within 45 minutes of gametime. This isn’t Colorado.

by Damen Jackson on Sep 22, 2008 4:08 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

there wouldnt be a worse time to buy an NLDS ticket from a broker than right now....

…everyone is asking a massive premium now and I would even say there isnt even a true market price for any ticket yet as no one is buying yet. The market wont really develop until this weekend as we dont even know the opponent. (some teams fans travel well and some dont, that will have some impact on prices)

The prices will come down quite a bit for the NLDS as the date gets closer IMO as many will be saving thier cash in the hope for an NLCS or WS ticket.

Ticket Strategy

This may or may not work but I’d get a list of all the season ticket holders mailing addresses, knock on their doors and tell them you are the ticket inspector and need to inspect their tickets for unwelcome smudges and blemishes. Once you have them in hand run like the wind yelling: This theft has been brought to you by the 2008 Palin for VP campaign.

Disclaimer: this strategy will lead to a multiple year prison sentence

ASAP.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

by JohnM on Sep 22, 2008 3:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No.. you guys dont understand...

Tickets are often reserved for the day of game for various reasons… player allocation, team allocations, sponsors, etc. And, often, the day before the game, the team finds that those allocations were excessive, and the tickets are returned into the general pool. Thats why totally sold out games will still have tickets if you catch the box office at the right times.

So by saying “no” you really probably mean “I dont think so”, unless you’ve got some inside knowledge of the clubs ticketing policy.

by Champ Summers on Sep 22, 2008 3:17 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Here's the difference.

The Cubs’ ticket policy ends at the end of the regular season. The playoffs are a MLB event. THEY decide how the tickets are going to be sold and handled.

Trust me when I tell you that there will be ZERO tickets available at the box office for ANY postseason game. Camp out if you want, dance on the sidewalk, beg. But you will not get a ticket on the day of the game at the ticket windows.

Sub-topic... last year's tickets.

I got to thinking (a new thing Im trying, where I think and all)… last year I was soo excited to get tickets for game 4 of the NLDS and home game 3 of the NLCS… I thought I was very, very lucky… and yet both sets of tickets went unused. Its kind of tempering my excitement for possibly getting tickets for the NLDS again…

Anyone else have horror stories from last year?

I got one set of tickets for the NLDS and two sets of tickets for the NLCS. I had to mail my tickets back for the NLDS, but I still have a photo copy of them. Never got the NLCS tickets. It was sad to see those refunds come in, but they did take quite some time for whatever reason.
