The Top 10 Cubs Games Of 2008
Let's have a bit of fun while we wait for tonight's game at Shea. There are seven games remaining in the regular season (sorry, Astros, but I think you'll be done long before that makeup game would have to be played), and while there may perhaps be a memorable game or two in the next week, I thought I'd put a poll out there so all of you can vote for your favorite or most memorable game of this season and we can tabulate a "top 10".
In the attached poll, I've put nineteen of what I think are the best games of 2008, and one for you in case I left one off that you think is better than the 19 I listed. Vote for your favorite, and if yours isn't on the list, leave it in the comments.

I like the 4 game sweep of the Brewers; really set the tone for the rest of the season, and stopping their unstoppable force (although he did not get the L) really got us fired up.
But as for sheer lunacy, I’d have to go with my birthday game – September 18 – as completely and wholly unbelievable.

I agree with Dan
Your birthday game beats my birthday game (June 12) in my book too, mainly cause I was lucky enough to be at Wrigley. Reading the above list of games gives me goosebumps, this team is very special!

Agree Brew Crew Sweep
This was at such a piviotal point in the season the brewers breathing down the back of our necks. and we go and not only beat there go to guy but doing it in his first cub brewer game in milwaukee. That game set the tone for the sweep and the season. but in that game we wore down the whole team in a momentum swinging back and forth game

The Z No Hitter
Not only was the no hitter one of the most amazing games I’ll ever see in a regular season baseball game but this game also comforted me (and most Cubs fans) as turning September around. We all had our doubts if we said it or not that the Cubs could collapse with Z and Harden both skipping starts. This performance not only put a smile on my face but allowed me to relax a little watching the rest of the games.

It wasn't really a specific game, per se...
But it was a moment of pride when my 2 year old sons were able to recognize Geovany Soto on the TV and yell “Go Go Soto” when he was up to bat.
Cubdom is filled with stories like these. I want my story to end like my Grandmother’s… On her deathbed last year, she asked me what the score was. I didn’t have the heart to tell her we were losing… She would have loved this team.

Picking a favorite game
is kind of like asking a parent which child they love more. It’s really hard to come up with an answer, I went with Z’s no hitter. I could have just as easily went with the comeback vs the rockies, the miracle comeback vs the brewers, the four game sweep of the brewers, etc… I could keep going on and on. However I feel like the best is yet to come

In compiling this list...
… I felt the same way as you did looking at it. Each memorable game seemed topped by the last.
For me, it came down to between the no-hitter and the Soto HR/Brewer comeback, because they came as the Cubs solidified their division lead on the way to clinching. In the end, the no-hitter was incredible both for itself and how it came about.

Thanks for doing this...
It’s a great reflection on a GREAT season so far. I voted for the Z no-no since it was the first for the Cubs since 72… Also, thought the sweep of the White Sox was great. Didn’t Rami have a walk-off vs them?

I agree with your top two.
I would have picked Z’s no hitter as the most memorable if I had been able to watch the game unfold. I listened to the whole game and watched the 9th on ESPN and loved every second, but had I been able to watch the whole game in person or on TV, I would have been even more into it.
There is just something poetic about a game that has all the gloom and doom of the game on the 18th, end up completely turned into happiness and victory. It’s like a mini version of the history of the Cubs. No game I have ever seen compares with this one!

How can it be anything else . . .seriously?
I cant believe its really this close. I never expected to see a Cubs no-hitter in my lifetime. I thought I’d see a WS before a no-hitter.
We will see a lot of big comebacks, a lot of big wins against division rivals, a lot of close races . . . before we see another Cubs no-hitter.
It takes the cake. The only bigger will be a win in game 7 of the WS.

The reason I didn't vote for it...
was that this No Hitter was a great individual game for Z, I picked the game when I had no doubt that is going to be a great season/team, so I voted for the come back win on August 15th in FL.

I had the same thought.
Z’s no-no was a surreal and beautiful moment in the season – and Cubs history. But I voted for the July 28 win over CC (I know, I know…CC didn’t actually take the loss) in Milwaukee. I’ll always remember that win – and that series – as a huge turning point in the season, when suddenly the Brewers got a whole lot less scary and the Cubs started to really prove that they were (and are) champions.

I also thought of voting for that game, but nothing real amazing happened in that game, but it was by far the biggest series of the year for the cubs.

I'm prejudiced toward the No-No
since I was there (and don’t get to all that many games).
But aside from Z’s performance, the game had a lot of timely hitting; the 4-run 3rd saw all the runs score after two were out.
I’d also give a nod to the middle game of the St Louis two weeks ago, and in particular to Lilly’s play at the plate. Even though he was out, that seemed to be the pivotal moment where the Cubs’ September slide was cast aside. It fired up the team and they haven’t looked back.

I picked the May 30 comeback vs. Rockies because it was early in the season — a primer for other amazing games to come during the season.

I was watching this on Gameday and sensed something cool happening after the Edmonds home run. I left work, got in my car and went to a nearby bar to watch the comeback. After the DeRo homer, we were giving eachother high-fives and jumping around in disbelief.
I kept thinking how amazing that this was happening to the Cubs — a team using mostly reserves.

Hard to choose between the no-hitter and the Rockies comeback
but I chose the Rockies game because that set the tone for the whole season. After that, no matter how far behind the Cubs fell, most of us had faith they’d roar back just as they did with the Rockies. What a season!

Living in MN…and working the 9-5, I’ve missed some of these games, although MLB radio has comforted me many a day here. I had to choose the Rockies game, I was working from home…and it was the first game where I had the confidence in this team to do anything.

Me too
I’m in MN as well and was only able to see a few of these games. The Soto HR vs. Brewers was my favorite, probably because it is the freshest in my mind, but also b/c of its importance to our division clinching run.

I picked it for the same reasons
I remember the game thread, too — not much ledge jumping, just people hanging around to see what would happen.
In 2003, I was in an interminable meeting (I think it’s still going on) when the Cubs fell behind St. Louis early, and kept following the game, anyway. They chipped away and finally took the lead when I was back at my desk, standing at the computer waiting to see how the inning went before heading to the car. I jumped up when Alou drove in the lead run. That series was what convinced me that team had a chance to be special.
This game was similar (no meeting, though) – but it happened in May instead of September. Once Edmonds got his RBI double, I knew they were going to score more runs that inning.

I remember that game
b/c I was convinced Edmonds was a bad pick up and telling someone if he had a bad game it would be only a day or two before the Edmonds Experiment would be over.
Hence why I brought muffins to the meetings :)

Same here.
I picked this game because I was back in Chicagoland visiting my parents that week. My step mother is a huge WSox fan, but claims to root for both, although my Dad and I are skeptical. My Dad and I are the die-hards. That day, when we were down 9-0 or whatever the low point was, my stepmother said “I guess they don’t have it today.” and I said “yeah, there’s always tomorrow.” But we kept the game on, and she went out to the kitchen. Then the comeback started and continued. And while that game was hardly the greatest comeback I’ve seen, it was certainly in the top ten I’ve ever seen.
That was my first clue that this season was going to be special. That was the first of many comebacks this season.

For 2007 there’s of course the Aramis walkoff, DeRosa’s 5 hit game, clinch day, the wild pitch that put the Cubs in first against the Phillies…
However 2008 this is incredible!

most definitely
this is almost one of those rare situations to throw (this season’s only) numbers out the window. the approach at the plate is not comparable- Micah Hoffpauer doesnt have the plate discipline to get a meaningful playoff at-bat. when ward comes up, however, you know he will force the pitcher to throw strikes.

Thrust me, he does. The difference between the two would surprise you.
Scouts are much more precise at the big league level and have a much better book on gys than at AAA. Minor league pitchers are trying to impress with velocity and tend to pitch in the middle of the plate with a lot more fastballs. He seems to be extremely vulnerable with pitches down and in and has swung and missed at a ton of pitches there. I’m sure he will make the adjustment, but I don’t know if he will have enough ABs to do it.

My top 3...
1) Z’s no-hiiter
2) Ramirez’s granny off the Phillies in the 8th
3) Ramirez’s walk-off against the White Sox
I guess I’m a little partial to these because I was actually at these games. This whole season has been memorable so far, let’s hope this continues.

3. The sweep of the Brewers at Milwaukee after the AS game
- was probably the most important, but #1 and #2 were the games I’ll remember about this season (so far).

Ramirez walk off against the White Sox
I’m voting for this one because I was at the game. With a HUGE Sox fan. He gloated and teased most of the game. When they started playing Go Cubs Go he just looked at me and said “man I hate this song.” It was nice to have the last laugh.

Emporia...
Playoff watching is a definite question mark…it depends on the schedule, as I need to start asking off from work (serving at nights). I have night class 3 nights a week as well, so I’m not sure how it’ll play out. My roommate has been itching to get down to Lawrence for a night out some weekend, so maybe that’ll play out during the playoffs…

Man, I hope the Astros lose every game they play from now till the end of time.
What a bunch of babies.
Berkman said it’s all about money — and he’s right, it was HIS OWN TEAM OWNER who made it about money.
There’s no way MLB was going to let three games rest till the end of the season. They really ought to just shut up.

And surprise, surprise
Supposedly LaTroy Hawkins is one of these guys leading the whining charge. I don’t have a link, but I’ve heard radio reports that he had T-Shirts made for everyone that said “Bud Killed Us,” or something to that effect.

Don't blame LaTroy -- This is all on Cecil Cooper.
If the manager starts bitching about the scheduling change instead of just saying “the bases are the same distance apart here as they are in Houston, so shut up and play ball!”, how can you blame the players for following his lead???
If I were Cecil Cooper, I would have said, “Guys, we just swept these guys at Wrigley. The task now is easier, because we are the home team; we have the last AB. Let’s go get ’em, and appreciate the fact that these fans are paying good money to our owner. It sure beats playing in an empty yard in Miami. Play ball!”

because I watched it with my Sox fan friend (a rarity here in Iowa). But in my first-ever trip to Wrigley, Marquis battled Matt Cain for 7.5 scoreless innings, until A-Ram broke the scoreless tie with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th. Not season-changing, but definitely exciting.

The most enjoyable wins...
…were the Soto comeback game and Z’s no hitter. In regards to key wins/plays, I have to go with Johnson breaking up the double play late in game one (in the 4 game sweep of the Brewers) that allowed the Cubs to take the lead, and Lilly ramming into the catcher against the Cards.
Bottom line, this is a good team and was a good team right out of ST. The fun part is watching them develop a personality throughout the year, and I like what I see in regards to virtually every guy on the roster contributing at some point during the year. I also think Piniella has had a very positive influence on the Club, knowing which buttons to push to keep them on edge, without falling over the other side.

Tough choice between Z and the Rockies comeback
I went with the 9-0 comeback. I remember last year’s and ’06’s often-dormant offense well, and if this game had happened then, the Cub bats would have gone to sleep, and the game would have ended as it started. This game told me that the Cubs of ‘08 would be clawing and scratching and, yes, scrapping, for every win they could. Z’s game was incredible, true, but it was the cherry on top, while this game was the sundae.

The "Daryl Ward Channels Randall Simon" Game
Not what I would call the most important game of the year, but for me it is the most memorable. We were driving back from Lynchburg, VA after taking our daughter down to college, and I was following the game on my BlackBerry. My method is extremely unsafe: Go to Cubs Mobile and follow in Live Pitch-by-Pitch mode, propped up on the dashboard and watch the little dots. Highway 29 is rather hilly and winding, too. My wife woke up, saw what I was doing and decided that she would give me narration and I would watch the road. What a killjoy! Anyway, once we passed Charlottesville, just for the heck of it, I put it on 720AM and it came in clear as a bell! When Ward hit the homer, I yelled "they took the lead!", and my wife, no baseball fan she, high-fived me. We listened to the nerve-wracking bottom of the 9th, groaning at the HBP, thrilling at the game-ending K, and then the post-game show all the way home.

I was there in person to see that Thursday game at Wrigley Field. I was pleasantly surprised to see Soto hit that HR into the LF bleachers. There was a cold wind blowing at Wrigley that day. had to pick the Z no hitter...
….given that it’s been so long between Cubs no-nos (and we hopefully won’t have to wait another 36 years for another). a come back from a 9-0 deficit is certainly amazing and impressive, but it doesn’t hold up historically against a no-hitter.
i do believe that the Geo game will be similar to the Ryno game in Cubs lore though, particularly if Geo stays a Cub and ends up in the same place as Sandberg at the end of his career (albeit with a few—ok at least one—championship rings).
of course, an 11th W in the postseason would make this a moot conversation…there would be no disputing that as the most memorable game of the year

And while I’d like to vote for the one game I got to see live this year (featuring the Lillyslam of Molina at the plate) I had to go for Ramirez’ GS against the Phils.
I had the game on mute after Demp’s bad inning and was getting some stuff done around my apartment. After a wee break (literally) I come out to see Rami coming up with the bases jacked. Like I wasn’t even controlling myself, my hand reached for a tape and hit record. That was magical.

I might be the only one to vote for July 12th
I was at the whole series. My dad had a meeting in Chicago that weekend into the next week. I flew out for the friday game where Ramirez hit a 3 run homerun in the bottom of the 8th to break a scoreless tie. He flew out Saturday.
He planned his flight because that game was supposed to be a Fox game, 2:50 start. They switched the time to a Noon start. His plane wouldn’t land until 11:45. As I’m heading to the ballpark from the hotel, he calls me and says his plane was delayed. I leave his ticket at the front desk.
I’m at the game and the guy sitting next to me asked if I have the empty seat next to me. I explain the seat is for my dad but I’m not sure if his flight will get in on time and he’ll get to the game. My dad calls me in the 3rd inning and tells me he’s in a taxi heading down the Kennedy to our hotel asks where the closed El stop to Wrigley is from our hotel. Roosevelt I tell him. He gets on the wrong train but only went 1 stop south to Chinatown.
He finally gets to the game and the people around me start cheering when he gets there. He just looks at me and says get me a beer quickly. When he gets to the game, it’s 7-0 Cubs. He see the Giants score the next 7 runs and 1 Cubs run. But it’s the run the Cubs score in the bottom of the 11th to win it.

The team was a game up, and it was on national TV. The Cubs were reeling a bit, having split against Florida and lost two of three to Houston and Milwaukee. The game before against Florida was great to, with Fontenot’s huge double to win…

Technically they didn’t beat CC, he was let off the hook when Howry gave up a moon shot IIRC.
That game put them up 2 and after the Brewers pulled even the previous Saturday (this was a Monday game), and the rest was history. In a short span of ~78 hours in Milw, the Cubs dropped their magic number from 57 to 49.

Morning All!
Good Morning all! Boy it’s been a great couple of days here in Kuwait, I was watching the clincher on MLB.com saturday night, and even though it was a bad connection, I got most of the game and was able to see them clinch. That was awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing October baseball, I’ll be on leave and in the states for the first round.
I thought the biggest game of the year, although not the most memorable was the 1st game of the brewers series. There the cubs were, clinging to a 1 game lead, backs against the wall, and needing to beat Sabathia and take that series from the brewers which they did. That sweep built the insurmontable lead and broke the brewers backs. They never were able to recover from that, fired their manager, and dropped out of the division race. If it weren’t for the horrible bullpen of the Mets, the WC race would have been decided long ago.
Oh yeah, in case anybody hasn’t read it yet, but ESPN is running a article where the Astros players are made at Bug Selig and MLB for making them play the 2 games in Milaukee. Believe it or not, they’re claiming bias against them and for the cubs because according to them, MLB didn’t want to give the money back for selling two games and not playing them, and because it was the cubs, MLB and Selig decided the games must go on, and in Miller Park. Now, never mind that that was a last minute decision becuase the Astros dragged their heels on whether to play the games or not. ANd to suggest it was beause of money is absurd because it was the Astros owner Mcclane that insisted on playing in Houston because he needed the money for his precious payroll. That and the fact that the Astros front office had the absurd idea that they could play two baseball games in hurricane ravaged Houston, and stubbornly held those beliefs to the last minute, but it’s MLB’s fault? They even claiming(the astros) they they suffered from sleep deprivation because of all the flying and stuff. What crap, the astros need to stop whining and accept the fact that its THEIR fault the games got played up north instead of somewhere more neutral. I would have expected this from the brewers, not the astros.

I voted for the comeback against the Rockies
Most of the ones on the list I could only follow on gameday or not at all. The Rockies game I followed on gameday at work and since it was early in the year and not knowing the capability of this team, the comeback was so incredible and unexpected. The comeback games later in the season were great too but at that point we knew the team was capable of doing so but back in May, it was just more exciting because like I said it was unexpected.

A couple of thoughts
The question asks for the most memorable. For that, I think the majority is right that the three most memorable are the Rockies comeback game, the no-hitter and the Soto HR game. I originally voted for the Rockies game, but it seems to me that I will remember the no-hitter the most.
The question that a lot of the comments have really focused on is which was the most important game of the year. For that one, I have to go with May 1, 2008, a Cubs Brewers game at Wrigley. The Cubs lost thanks to Kerry Wood blowing the game, but that’s not why it was important. That was Yovani Gallardo’s last game of the year – he got hurt covering first base. When Gallardo went out, it changed the complexion of the NL Central. Yes, the Brewers went out and got Sabathia, but for 2 1/2 months, the Brewers only had one ace instead of two. And in my opinion, that was huge.

Marlins Comeback
There’s only one other BCB’er who agrees, but I really think the 9-6 comeback against the Marlins was unforgettable, and directed the success of this team.
We lose that game, its 3 of 4 lost to Marlins, tied for division lead heading into MIL and slumping from out of the AS break. I truly think we split with MIL if we don’t win that sunday game and its a dogfight from there on.
The confidence this team was able to re-establish with this win I think pushed them through the MIL series, which then snowballed their confidence to now.
Either way, its a great list to compare to and rehash.

I picked
the game in Milwaukee when the Cubs beat C.C. That win was the most important win of the season, if you ask me. Another memorable win that isn’t on the list is the 9-run 4th against the Sox when the Cubs went back to back twice.

I don't even know where to start!
I was lucky enough to be there for all of these occasions….
1. On opening day, to see Fukudome’s HR. It was awesome. And right away, from the start of that game… everytime he came to bat, the FU-KU-DOME chant thundered through the crowd for our newest Cub. It was such a naturall roll off the tongue.
2. The comeback vs the Rockies. What can I say… what an incredible game! We were just resigned to sipping our beers and looking at babes, occasionaly saying things like, “Well, you never know.” But, we never guessed in our wildest dreams that IT WOULD ACTUALLY HAPPEN! (I also witnessed last year’s wild comeback vs the Rockies as well).
3. Aramis’ walk-off the White Sox. Awesome!
4. Geo’s HR in the bottom of the 9th last Thursday vs the Brewers. What another incredible comeback!
5. The clincher on Saturday. Wow. What a celebration.
All in all… it was an incredible summer, and I was lucky enough to be there for so many great moments. Now… let’s go make some more great memories!
I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

The more I think about it...
That Opening Day game was magical. With all the hype surrounding Fukudome before the season, for him to come through like that in the bottom of the 9th… it gives me goosebumps. Getting a curtain call on your first game on a new team in a new country, awesome.
I know we lost that game, but that moment definitely overshadows the final score.

Just one more game to think about...
This game wasn’t very dramatic, as was such in the no hitter or the Rockies game, but I think it bears mentioning. The second game of the Cubs-Sox series was an incredible game, featuring a 9 run fourth inning which in itself featured 2 home runs courtesy of Jim Edmonds, and another from Mike “Lil Babe Ruth” Fontenot. I happened to be at the game so I might be a little biased but it was really great to quiet some of the Sox fans down with an incredible inning against what I consider to be a good pitcher in Jose Contreras. I personally don’t have much against the Sox, just their fans and their manager. So it was nice to stick it to them.
Just a fun thing from that game also, I happened to be sitting next to my buddy who is a big Sox fan, who had never heard of Mike Fontenot, when he came up in the fourth inning. He asked about him and I said “He’s a good fielder, can play a few positions, but he probably hasn’t hit a home run since little league”. And of course on the second pitch he smacked it out. I just laughed when he hit it.

Last night i was extremely angry and this is why:
A. I went to the Bears game
B. Since the above happened, i missed the Cubs game
3. Since the above happened, i missed the Ryder Cup finale
C. When i arrived home all i wanted to see was highlights of the above 2 (not the first one). What did i get Yankee Stadium on EVERY CHANNEL ESPN has to offer. Comcast was all about the Bears, NBC was all about Football. I had no where to go.

the May 30th comeback win
against the rockies is still one of the craziest games I’ve ever seen. I was at my office and on BCB getting play by play, if you can go back and read the threads for that game you’ll laugh soo hard. It was ONE of those memories that defines this year’s season.

I voted for the Rockies game because...
1. They won the game with no help from Ramy or DLee — the “other guys” came through.
2. The players didn’t give up even after their manager did.
3. It solidified Wrigley as a “death trap” to visiting teams.

I got ahead of myself
I am still so happy I was there Saturday that I voted Saturday but in retrospect, I believe I would have gone with on eof the comebacks or the no-no.
Or perhaps I would go with opening day, that was a great game to watch, until the end of course. I enjoyed Harden’s first start too, until Marmol almost gave it up. I liked that because it appeared to me that Sabathia wasn’t going to carry the Brewers past the Cubs very easily.

was awesome of course. But for me I don’t think I was as thrilled all year more than when D ward hit the HR in Miami. Maybe it’s because I was at the Kane county cougar game and getting looks from people because I had my radio with me constantly checking for updates in a game that seemed all but lost. I picked the no-hitter
because I’ve never been that nervous watching a regular season game in my life.
A favorite of mine that didn’t make the list (probably because it was overshadowed by the game which occurred the day before) was this game.

This poll
Sorry if this has been said already (I read about half the comments), but how cool is it that you could even have a poll like this? Look at those games. You would normally need at least 2 seasons of good, good baseball to get that many amazing games.
I picked the Rockies game, because it was the first time I saw that this team not only had an amazing will to win but a weird ability to do so even when you would not even begin to expect it as a fan.

My favorite game isn't on this list
It wasn’t particularly meaningful or exciting. May 26, Dodgers @ Cubs.
another ho-hum 3-1 win. But its my favorite because its was my first and (to date) only time at Wrigley Field. My sisters and brother in law went into the city for the weekend b/c my baby sister was turning 21. We stayed out too late (bars, japanese food, being silly) and barely made it to the game at all. But being in Wrigley to hear the crowd do the Fu-ku-do-me chant, boo Edmonds, and our section did a “woo-dy” chant in the 9th.
Not a meaningful game really, but by far my favorite.
I voted for Rami’s grand slam against the Phillies. How unbelievably clutch is he?
