snapshot from the Bob Howry Fan Club foundational meeting
I was too busy in organizational leg work for the Jim Edmonds Fan Club Charity Bowl to be held in mid November to notice the email I got from fellow BCB'er HowryRox inviting me to the first meeting of the Bob Howry Fan Club held earlier this evening.
He sent me a snap from his iPhone he took there.
Unfortunately, it doesn't encourage me to go to the next one ... Sorry, ol buddy.
Have a Coke for me, will ya?

Last night
Howry did an amazing job to get out of that 9th inning jam last night. Huge props to him for that.

However
without said leadoff triple, there is no jam to work out of.
Just sayin.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to react to Howry's outing last night.
That triple appeared to be an almost certain game-ender at the time. But then he made deft use of the intentional walk and got a couple of Ks and a ground ball when he really needed them. I’d guess his stock remains relatively stable in the eyes of Lou Piniella.

He hasn't given up a run since Sept. 4
Surprising, isn’t it? I’m really not sure what to think either, but apparently he’s been better recently that I remembered him being.

He hasn't allowed a run
but he’s putting himself in dicey situations still. But I agree, he has been pitching better, and well enough to escape the trouble he gets into.

That's true.
And despite the two walks last night, his K:BB ratio is still pretty amazing as is his overall walk rate. I dunno…I’m certainly not dancing on air when he comes into the game, but I have a feeling Lou is not going to give up on him.

Sorry no credit for this
I remember the first game of the recent Brewers series. Tie game and he comes in and CC hits one to the warning track and then
walks the next guy and THEN Lou pulls him. I do NOT want this guy used in game situations.

Scares me too...
mainly because Lou will likely remove the triple from his memory and simply remember the fact that he was able to get the next three outs. Don’t get me wrong. Aside from Wright’s generous K, he pitched well but that has never been my issue with the man. He usually “comes back” but IMO, good pitchers don’t ALWAYS need to “come back”.

That's normally the tack I take, too
But I am proud (?) of him for getting out of it. I usually cover one eye when Howry takes the mound, thinking being that his performance will only be half as bad.
But as he made his pitches after that triple, I was torn as to whether it was a) Howry pitching well, or b) the Mets choking in the clutch.
Either way, he wasn’t scared and went after the batters, and that’s a good sign. Hopefully he can do it against a team that doesn’t have Dr. Heimlich at the ready every September.

Let's not forget...
That the lead off triple was a 2-strike, lead off triple. Opponents are hitting .286 off of Howry with 0-2 counts, with 12 hits and 18 strikeouts in 42 at bats.
Here’s what is interesting…
Howry leading off an inning: .349 BA.
None on/out: .344 BA
None on/ 1/2 out: .291 BA
Runner on second: .231
Second & third: .125
First and second: .250
First and third: .231
Scoring position, 2 out: .268
None on: .315
Runners on: .294
Runners in scoring position: .235
He seems to be more comfortable with runners on. Maybe he focuses more? Or could just be random coincidence.
