I just don't see the place for him.
Ward fulfills the role of lefty off the bench much better. Fonty can play second base. Pie can play all three outfield spots, and he’s way faster. I don’t see room for Hoff.

I disagree totally.
Hoff isn’t any better than Ward, and Ward has WAY more experience. I’d MUCH rather have Ward at bat. There’s no hole in his swing, and he can take a walk.

I'm sure Lou
will handle it the right way. It’s a tough decision, actually, choosing between two guys who can’t hit major league pitching right now.
Experience certainly plays a role. Like I said, I’ll leave it up to Lou. Hoff gets my vote at the moment, though.
Long days and pleasant nights.
by The Original Dave on Sep 25, 2008 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions
It's not a tough decision at all.
Ward has PROVEN he can hit ML pitching. Hoff has not. Once again, Ward has a few fall in, and we’re not even discussing this.

You don't need a PH in the playoffs taking a walk...
…you need a hit. And Ward has not hit this season.
Not saying Micah should replace him, but, really Ward’s been so bad this year, save 2 big hits, it’s scary.

Ward has hit
just as much as Hoffpauer. And walks are highly underrated. We need players to GET ON BASE. You can’t score lots of runs without lots of baserunners.

My only problem with Ward
is once he gets on base he has to be replaced with someone who can actually run. Then you use up two bench players.
sure
but Lou is the master of the double switch. I’ll take my chances with Ward the Clutch hitter.

he doesn't do that either.
his job is to have a good at bat, try to put the ball in play (or out of the park) — usually in a highly clutch situation.
I trust Ward to do that over Hoff. It’s not logical. The sample size is too low to be effective. It’s gut feeling. YMMV.

I’m saying Ward, compared to other years, has not had Ward-like numbers. He’s down about 100 points on his OBP this year compared to last year. I’ve wanted him to be the Daryl of old all year, but save for two big hits, he hasn’t.

If he walks, he creates more baserunners for Sori — hardly a bad thing.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
One other factor...
Ward is a much better OF than Hoff. (I know that isn’t exactly a compiment.) If DeRo and Cedeño are hurting, and Dome’s bat remains in Japan, that may become a factor. Also, if you carry both, you won’t have Pie to PR for DeRo, Soto, or Edmonds.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Ward is a proven, veteran hitter.
He has hit many balls hard this year. Most of them found a glove. When you have as few at bats as Ward has had this year, a couple of those hard hit balls fall in and he’s one of the leading pinch hitters in the league.
