We discussed this earlier. Hoff's ML stats. are not better than Ward's.

In fact, you can’t even compare them. One is a position player, the other is a pinch hitter.

Hoff has no position on defense.

Hoff is not the proven, veteran hitter that Ward is. If you really want a career minor-leaguer who finally learned to hit AAA pitching just this year, then I seriously have to begin to doubt your baseball acumen.

Jimmyeatworld

by Jimmyeatworld on Sep 25, 2008 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Please don't get snarky

There’s no reason to “doubt one another’s baseball acumen”. None of us here are baseball professionals. We are merely opinionated fans. And it is my opinion that the hot bats need to play. Ward is not significantly better on defense than Hoffpauir.

Once again:

BA .377 HR 2 RBI 8 OBP .433 SLG .607

by cubsonWGN4ever on Sep 25, 2008 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not getting snarky.

When you make assertions like Hoff should be on the post season roster instead of Ward, it’s important to understand that every roster spot from one to 25 has to be on there for a reason despite they got hot in the last 4-5 games. Hoff has no position, Ward is better on D., he has a defined position(s). Hoff struggles to play both the OF corners, and struggles to play first base. Having Hoff on the roster would be akin to having a player that you hope can get a pinch hit- when he has limited to no experience as a pinch hitter.

I apologize if I offended you.

That said, if Hoffpauir looks good these next 3 games and Daryle does not, I can understand going with the hot hand in the NLCS.

he doesn’t. So far, today is an abberation in the daily life of Micah Hoffpauir.

He can’t field. He can’t run. He’s got a big hole in his swing, and the fact that he’s beating the crap out of the Mets bullpen, well, I’m happy for him, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to support setting aside Daryle freakin’ Ward to put a journeyman minor-leaguer on the post-season roster!

It's not a sore subject.

It’s illogical and short sighted to want to put Hoff on the post season roster instead of Ward or Dome.

Every player on the 25 man post season roster is important. I for one understand that a player must have a position, a reason to be on the roster besides the fact that he has a hot bat at the moment. Hoff over Ward weakens the bench & defense. Hoff over Dome, weakens the bench and defense even more.

Just be logical. I’m happy that Hoff is having a great night, but it’s one night, and he does have to do more than hit if he wants to sniff the post season roster.
