It doesn't.

It stands to reason that when a player, (Church), runs that far out of the base line- he’ll be able to avoid the tag.

Jimmyeatworld

by Jimmyeatworld on Sep 25, 2008 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree. He was at least three feet outside the baseline.

The throw was great, Hill was in position, but Church ran way in the hell out of the baseline.

I assume if this is the playoffs. Lou’s out there arguing.

by Cubfansince1957 on Sep 25, 2008 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

THe throw was not great

it was 6 feet up the line.

That said, our minor league catcher had ample time to set himself and take care of it.

Church had no business being sent on that play….

c’mon, you and I both know baseline isn’t a consideration there.

The throw has to be close. And it wasn’t. And the catcher has to handle it. And he didn’t.

Pinch hitters are judged on the hard hit balls that they have over the course of the year.

Whether they are caught, and result in outs, or if they fall in. This is because pinch hitters have limited plate appearances and thereby limited ABs during the season. Ward has hit the ball hard all year, and most of them have found a glove. If a few of those drop in, his average as a PH goes up dramatically. This isn’t even really a contest, Ward will be on the post season roster, not Hoff.

Still

Even if he hasn’t been great, the question is… who gives you a better chance to win in the playoffs? Hoff, who’s undeniably played great all year (minors and majors) or Ward, who’s struggled all year? I love Ward, but I’m leaning towards Hoff here.

What?

The ability to hit a baseball is what matters. Right now, Hoff has more of that ability than Ward does. THAT is what matters.

by kanderber on Sep 25, 2008 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

No, it doesn't.

What matters is the ability to have a good at bat. Ward is a better hitter. You cannot apply minor league ability here.

don’t work for pinch hitters the same way they do for people who get a coupla hundred ABs a season.

by kanderber on Sep 25, 2008 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions

no

they just don’t work the same way. As Jimmy said, it’s about makign contact with the ball, hitting the ball hard, and having clutch hits. That’s not as easy to measure.

Hitting is about not making an out.

Period. Whether it’s leading off the game, batting cleanup up 8 runs, or pinch hitting. I think it’s kind of silly to say that stats don’t work the same way. As a hitter, your objective is to not make an our (aside from the rare situation where you’re trying for a sac fly). Hoff is better at not making outs.

by kanderber on Sep 25, 2008 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Hitting is not about making an out? Duh!

BAs and other stats. used to judge pinch hitters are different simply because of the disparity of total ABs. No more, no less. So stop trying to educate me on how the objective is not to make an out, that’s obvious to anyone who has ever watched a game.

Hoff is not better at pinch hitting, or playing the field than Ward. Hoff, as much as I like him, is a career minor leaguer. Ward has a proven track record, regardless of his struggles this year. It’s really rather simple.

Jimmyeatworld

by Jimmyeatworld on Sep 25, 2008 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You're right, it is rather simple.

And I don’t know why you’re not getting it. First off, I’m not trying educate you, I hope it didn’t come off like I’m trying to talk down to you. Sorry if it did.

With that said… who cares about Ward’s track record? The fact is, he’s sucked this year. Sammy Sosa had a hell of a track record, then he fell off. Every player eventually stops being good. It’s absurd to suggest that since Ward was good last year, he’s a better option than Hoff simply because of that. He’s hitting .216 this year. .216! That’s pathetic.

by kanderber on Sep 26, 2008 8:05 AM CDT up reply actions

he's not?

in a little over half the at bats, Hoff has nearly as many strikeouts as Ward.

So what?

How many ground outs? Fly outs? Line outs? An out is an out, and most of the time a K is no different than a ground out. Sometime’s a K is better than a groundout.

Hoff has MORE hits than Ward, in 2/3’s of the at bats. THAT’s a telling stat… number of K’s isn’t even close to telling you anything.

Hoff would never play D in the postseason, neither would Ward. How did Lee even get into this discussion?

please continue nonsensical childish rant. I’m amused. Oh, when Ward fails in the clutch again, you won’t hear me push for the inclusion of Hoff. At that point, I will root for who ever is playing for the cubs, and if it is Ward, then I am going to support him completely. If it is Theriot, then I am going to support him completely. I just think that while it hasn’t been decided (that we know of), that I feel better with Hoff up than Ward. Ward seems done.

by renke81 on Sep 25, 2008 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. I am impressed with them as well.

They are MUCH better to listen to – even when the Mets are mounting a comeback or winning. Very professional. They provide the information in an unbiased manner and let the listener determine how to process the information rather than TELLING people what they should think.

I cringe when I have to listen to Cincy or Houston’s announcers. Terrible.

Started getting texts in the later innings from Phillies fans that the Cubs are lying down for the Mets and karma is going to get the Cubs in the playoffs for doing that.

Maybe if the Phillies don’t lose 2 out of 3 to the Braves this week, they wouldn’t have to worry about what the Cubs do.

Thanks.

Mixed feelings, to be honest — and I’m not happy with myself about that.

I can’t help thinking long-term, this might be a better result. Better chance to start against the Mets, better chance to not see the opposition’s ace until game 3 (assuming Carlos starts on Sunday), better chance the NL’s 2nd best team goes home after Sunday.

But man, that bullpen….

You?

One other thing

is it leaves the Mets tied or 1 up. With us going to the Brewers for meaningless games (which we’re still going to try somewhat to win) this goads them both on to sprint to the finish line. Hopefully leaving both tired.

Yes, absolutely

…but the Rose Bowl is PAC-10 v BIG 10. So granted there’s the probability that if we win out and so do they, we meet at the Rose Bowl anyway. But any loss for USC is good for football (IMO), and it just opens things up for the Badgers to get to the title game. RB is a fall back in that scenario, really.

3 players off the playoffs roster:

Bob Howry (not pitching well with consistency)
Koyie Hill (not needed; plus horrible defensively. Last night he tipped Samarzidja’s pitches. Tonight he pretended to block the plate 6 feet ahead of it, allowing the runner to run around him and touch home. A good catcher gets the ball from RF and moves back into the runner to tag him; he doesn’t stay put in the middle of the basepaths 6 feet away from home.)
D. Ward (not hitting; Hoffpauir is the hot hand: play it!)
