Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Sports Illustrated hates the Cubs

Two Days ago, Trey2317 had a great comment about how some MLB teams have overcome the SI Jinx and won the World Series.

1991 Twins (ALCS)
1992 Blue Jays (ALCS)
1996 Yankees (prior to World Series)
2001 Diamonbacks (middle of WS)
2004 Red Sox (middle of WS)
2005 south side club (middle of WS)
2007 Red Sox (leading into WS)

I'm not a beliver in curses or jinxes or ghosts .... But we have precedent going against us.  Check this out.  The Cubs can't seem to catch a break when they get featured on S late in the year

1969, 71, 84, 98, and 2003 are all examples.  Somehow we managed to blow it in 89 and 207 on our own.

This team in 2008 will control thier own destiny

No “curse” or jink or whatever is going to stop them.

I couldn't say it better.

Lets not create excuses anymore, the team controls their own destiny.

Thanks for bringing up

curses, and jinxes, because we are SO not used to hearing about them. Do you work at Fox Sports?

yes the cubs failed to win the WS because of a magazine picture

it definitely had nothing to do w/ the players.

people who buy into curses are just looking for an excuse.

Just heard something on the radio....

The Vegas oddsmakers think off all the possible combinations a Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim World Series has the best probability of happening.

Interesting.

by MDBNIU on Sep 26, 2008 8:59 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that's not true

Cubs are favored in the NL, angels are favored in the AL. therefore, the oddsmakers think a Cubs vs. angels series has the best probability of happening.

OK, far be it from me to defend MDBNIU...

… but are you denying that he heard something on the radio? How can you do that? Were you there when he was listening to the radio?

well

I was just checking out my favorite odds making website and the Cubs(345) have the lowest odds along with Anaheim(335) to win the world series so don’t know what Vegas casion has Philly(890) or Dodgers(1210) as the lower odds.

hmm

I cant put plus signs in my post?

anyway that was supposed to list as
(plus)345
(plus)335
(plus)890
(plus)1210

Vegas odds

When I was there on 9/15, Treasure Island Sports Book had the Cubs at 2:1, Angels 4:1.

I turned off my alarm in the middle of the night

and was late for work today. Everytime that’s ever happened the Cubs did not win the World Series within a month.

AHHHHH!!!

Sports Illustrated will feature the Cubs everytime

they have a chance to win it all. The Cubs sell magazines.

So you can either get used to it and stop thinking there is any such thing as curses or you can start using it as some lame excuse in case the Cubs don’t win it all and be laughed at and mocked by friends and serious people.

by Josh77 on Sep 26, 2008 11:05 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree

that some people buy into the curse thing just to look for an excuse….this cubs team is not the same as the 99 other teams that didn’t win it and shouldn’t constantly be reminded of “curses”….whatever happens in the playoffs is of thier doing and thier doing alone, not some profound magazine picture

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?
