Pitching theory

Does it make sense to put a sub-par reliever in (not saying Marmol is subpar) when the opponent is rolling instead of one’s closer? I mean doesn’t it make sense to put the guy you consider your stopper in to STOP the opposition instead of saving him for the 9th when by that time your sub-par reliever may have already choked up the lead? Opinions?

by VegasCubFan on Sep 27, 2008 4:58 PM CDT reply actions

well, that's the theory

and why some teams (2004 Red Sox) attempted a closer by committee, thinking they could bring in their best reliever whenever. But, it didn’t work, because not all relievers have the mentality to close games.

by DeRoMyHero on Sep 27, 2008 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting...

Assuming that he is an “adequate” defensive CF, are you advocating this because he doesn’t have a COF bat, because you think there are no better CF options (Pie, trade, or FA), or because you want to create space for LBR?

"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007

by DeRoMyHero on Sep 27, 2008 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the organization has decided that they can't live with his bat in a corner spot.

And so you have to do something with Dome, who isn’t going anywhere. I really think that Dome has the same value either in CF or RF, but the Cubs seem to want more offense out of RF.

by cwyers on Sep 27, 2008 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

But...

That leaves the next question?

Do you think that DeRo has an adequate COF bat (and glove)? A large part of DeRo’s value is providing some power in the MI. If he had a COF bat, the Braves would never have non-tendered him.

Then…

Does LBR have an everyday bat? Or do you try to trade for a RF or 2B? Pie’s value has been severely diminished. What else of value do we have for such a trade?

"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007

by DeRoMyHero on Sep 27, 2008 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really know what the market is right now, and how it would shuffle out.

I do know that Edmonds is not a long-term answer in CF, and that Dome is a long-term question.

by cwyers on Sep 27, 2008 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I suppose the real question is:

Can you get a CF, RF, or 2B via trade or FA who is better than LBR? I’m just concerned about making DeRo an everyday OF. I know he doesn’t like playing there, and I wonder how much effect playing there every day would have on his bat…

marquis is a starting pitcher

i dont see why he should be used from the bullpen. it never seems to work.

We need a DP.

How about a 4-6-3 kind right now.
