Samardzija on, Gaudin off---Tribune
By Paul Sullivan |Tribune reporter
11:56 PM CDT, September 27, 2008MILWAUKEE - Jeff Samardzija will make the Cubs' postseason roster Saturday, while veteran Chad Gaudin likely will be left off.
Samardzija's status was shaky because of some recent outings. After throwing 14 1/3 scoreless innings in August, he has a 5.40 earned-run average in September with eight walks and 11 hits allowed over 8 1/3 innings.
Manager Lou Piniella wanted to see Samardzija get ahead in the count and throw his split-fingered fastball more often, and it seems to have gotten him back in a groove.
"I don't think I was ever really out of [a groove]," Samardzija said. "It was just a matter of taking a little different approach. Mentally I was having some success [earlier], so maybe I was trying to take it too far instead of just going up and attacking the zone."
So does that mean Howry on....with Wood, Marmol, Cotts, Marquis, and Marshall?

Edited this to show Sullivan's work as a quote.
Yes, it looks like the pen is exactly as you say.

Not to flog a dead horse, but...........
…………I’d rather see Howry out with either Gaudin or Wuertz in his stead.
Yes. Even Michael Wuertz would be better.

Is this just because of Gaudin's recent ineffectiveness?
Or is he still hurting?

Gaudin claims he's okay.
Unfortunately the results have been lacking.
Howry’s not been injured at all (for what we know), yet his results have been lacking too.
Lou must believe Bob still has something left for October. Right now he’s about the only one thinking that way.

Excluding Howry, that is a pretty solid bullpen
Howry will most likely (or SHOULD ONLY) be used if there is mopup work or if we are ahead by a bunch of runs, that way we don’t have to use Wood or Marmol.

At least there is no mystery as to Howry's status--he just sucks
Lou’s preference here for certain suckyness v. mysterious health status reminds me of Dusty’s preference for quick ABs and high rates of prolific outmaking in his lineups v. the patience of disciplined ABs and the apparent frustration from guys not getting hits with all those guys on base—oh, and the base clogging.
Lou’s the Manager, he gets paid the big bucks to make these decisions.
