Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Astros, Wednesday 9/3, 7:05 CT

Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs, Sep 3, 2008 7:05 PM CDT

Next Game

Houston Astros
@ Chicago Cubs

Wednesday, Sep 3, 2008, 7:05 PM CDT
Wrigley Field

Randy Wolf vs Ryan Dempster

Cloudy. Winds blowing in from left field at 10-15 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 65.

Complete Coverage >

Think of it this way. The Cubs have won seven of their last 11 games, in this sequence:

WWWWWWWLLLL

What if those 11 games had gone:

WWWLWWLLWWL

You wouldn't be so worried then, would you?

There's a chance of rain tonight, but they had better get tonight's game in, because even though both the Cubs and Astros are off tomorrow, we are supposed to get the remnants of Hurricane Gustav in the Chicago area tomorrow, with heavy rain and wind.

In the meantime, there were actually a few things from last night's game worth memorializing with a photo:

But I don't WANNA go!
Brandon Backe being taken out by Cecil Cooper in the 5th. Cooper almost had to yank the ball out of Backe's hand.

Which ball?
Jim Edmonds leaping and missing a catch on Hunter Pence's drive in the 6th. When he came down, a BP ball came out of the ivy.

A non-memorable debut, at that
Casey McGehee's ML debut announced on the message board. Not-So-Mighty Casey struck out.

I'm not keeping THIS one.

Above are Wolf's numbers with the Astros only; see the pitcher box for his combined full season stats.

And even though most of the current Cubs haven't hit Wolf that well -- the best are Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez, both .250 with 1 HR -- Wolf has a 2-6, 4.98 lifetime record in 13 starts vs. the Cubs and 1-4, 5.36 at Wrigley Field, including being hit early and often earlier this year when he was with the Padres, eight hits and seven runs in four innings, including a HR by Alfonso Soriano.

Ryan Dempster pitched on Tornado Day, August 4, and gave up two runs in five innings and had to be removed after the long rain delay. Two weeks earlier, he threw eight shutout innings against the Astros in Houston. Lance Berkman has homered off him four times in 43 career AB.

Today's game is on CSN and FSN Houston. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I like how in the Best Starts By Cub Teams Since 1900 chart

2008 is sandwiched in right between 1908 and 1969.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

That's would be an interesting bit of strategey...for next year!

We send Howry down to Des Moines and he will artificially inflate the opponents offensive numbers, which could lead to some players getting called up that really aren’t that good. This would weaken the teams we play and Howry could end up actually HELPING us again!

Analogy

Nice analogy, Al, about the WWWLWWLLWWL

To be the devil’s advocate, however, imagine you’re flying on a plane. It’s taken a few bumps, but it continues to fly forward for the most part. Compare that to a plane you’re on that just takes a straight dive down. A different story, and you’re not going to feel better if the pilot tells you, “Don’t worry – for 7 of the past 11 minutes we were flying straight ahead with no problem.”

I don't think that 4 straight losses call for the normal landing checklist.

I’d look at “stall recovery procedures” first, THEN worry about the landing.

This is not a stall

This is, at best, rerouting—deviation of 20 degrees due to weather. At worst, heavy chop and a request for FL370.
Sorry for being a nerd.

Just remember

This plane has had some problems with smooth landings in the past, most recently in October of last year but also in 2004 and before that in 2003. Of course, the 2003 and 2004 turbulence occurred with a different pilot at the throttles.

Not only that, you don't look at a checklist during a stall -- there's no time.

You’ve got to KNOW what to do!

Lower the angle of attack, throttle in, wait for a positive VSI and climbing altimiter, remove first notch of flaps (if applicable).

Hopefully the Cubs are smart about it

They are in control of the start time. They can choose to delay the start time w/o interferance from the umpires. The umpiring crew does not take over control of the game until the game actually starts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_delay#Baseball

I would hope they would delay enough the start to ensure that demp gets as many innings as he can. It will be painful to start the game and then have to stop it 2 innings later since demp probably would not come back out.

My theory on Howry:

Hendry insists on Lou putting Howry on the post season roster. So Lou keeps putting him out there to blow games until Hendry walks in his office and and says, “OK I get it, Howry is off the October roster.”

I think Lou has given up on Howry. Now he is trying to prove it to his bosses. I hope last night did the trick. That should be the last important game that Howry pitched.

seems rather unprofessional to me. Howry is a veteran who’s pitched well for years and has earned respect from his peers. I don’t think Lou would do such thing.

by chilango2 on Sep 3, 2008 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I said it wrong.

It is not that Lou or any of us want Howry to blow games, obviously. But Lou has to put Howry into pressure situations for him to succeed or fail until his bosses see that he is more likely to fail than succeed.

I think the answer is now clear enough that the test period is officially concluded. I hope Lou can end the Howry experiment. Hopefully between the Shark, Marshall and September call up we can fill the roster out (with those names who were eligible as of 9/1, obviously).

Another blown save for STL

3-3 tie in the ninth

Your 2008 Missouri Tigers! #6 1-0 (0-0). Next up Saturday home vs. SEMO. We might drop 100 points on them.

I have no problem admitting I wanted the Cards to win

Don’t want the D-Bags in the playoffs. That being said I’m not crying about this blown save.

Would it be possible to not let Newhan and Quintero beat us today?

What if the Cubs had lost every one of their games

and then won their last 85. We’d be singing a different tune, huh?

It’s not the losing four in a row that has me worried. It’s that Lee and Fukudome can’t hit the ball higher than three feet off the ground and that the pitching is suddenly showing signs of severe problems both health and effectiveness wise.

More official news on Harden

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1143310,harden090308.article

It comfirms he has discomfort. Let’s just start scoring more runs and hope these guys can pitch sooner than later.

Sick to my stomach...

they have been indeed lying about injuries. Thought they wouldn’t do that anymore.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Pushed enter too soon

We don’t know the whole story. Z and Harden might not be telling Lou and everyone else the truth…

by ak123 on Sep 3, 2008 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Thus lying. I know nobody in the organization has mind-(or body-)reading powers, but still feels bad.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Sep 3, 2008 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My theory

If you were hurt, an Ace on the first place team, would you want to share an injury that could shut you down? We all know Z would never want to do that. We don’t know Harden that well but I could guess he was offered to skip a start and took Cubs up on the offer from undisclosed discomfort.

Rotation,travel plans & Maddux

I have had almost no real internet for a week being in LA on vacation and our office
e mail has been off for TWO DAYS so other than my anti-Lou rant i have not had time to post and only read a little . Here is some rotation tidbits that may or may not have been mentioned.
We will NOT face Volquez in the Cinci series
Padres have revamped the rotation so now instead of the CC Vs Peavy match up it
will be CC Vs Rookie with one MLB start ( Geery) but it does mean Peavy Vs Sheets so works for me. The long anticipated return of our old friend Shaun Estes will be tomorrow Vs Suppan. GOOD luck

I took the plunge today and used my long saved airline miles to get a ticket for the first
two games of the playoffs which means that had better be at Wrigley. I have hold till Monday for a plane ticket to Chicago first two games of round 2.

Monday I was a Dodger Stadium watching Madog get 354 and it was like old times He scared the hell out of me by giving up 3 straight hits and a run to start the game ( Manny makes Sori look like a Gold Glover) but then returned to form. He gave up two in 5 2/3rds but Torre should have left him in for the final out of the inning. He ALSO hadan RBI single ( and not a blooper) had a nice hard slide into 2nd on a force to break up a double play and 3 wonderful put outs. I am not generally fond of Dodger fans but they truly LOVE HIM so I will cut them some slack.

Home to land of no internet ( but EI to watch Cub games)

Just saw Lou's

pregame interview and he was pretty grumpy. I kind of hope Demp can pitch a cg tonight. I don’t want to see Howry tonight, not even in the dugout.

Z Down - Harden Down

New Starting rotation:

Dempster
Lilly
Marquis – Yes he would be our third starter
Marshal
Shark/Gadiun/AAA Starter?

Can this pitching rotation win 13 of the next 25?

We will see

Are either officially on the DL or jusr rumors?

Fat , drunk , and ,stupid is now way to go through life son.

by alabebo on Sep 3, 2008 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Niether are on the DL and won't be because of the 40 man rosters

But Z is hurting and so is Harden. If they are out this is what our rotation will look like.

Gadiun is having back issues, too.

Keep on a happy face but Lou is not happy and i don’t care what you want to think but:

THIS IS NOT GOOD!

The only thing official...

that I know of, is that Z will miss his next scheduled start on Sunday.

I'm going to Cincy for all three games..

Going to see Lilly, Marquis, and Marshall! Hope they step it up!!

The last 4 games it has been our offense

that has lost us the game…So why worry too much right now about the pitching…Neither are on the DL. Get the DAMN bats going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where did the best offense in baseball go????
