Dave Kaplan...thoughts?

I would like to know what the general opinion of Mr. Kaplan is around these parts. I currently am without my cable having just moved into a new place, and as a result, I've been listening to a good chunk of my games on 720 lately. It's been awhile since I've listened to Kaplan's post-game and I'm listening to it now (post Astros sweep). Some pretty heated stuff. Specific, general thoughts?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

He's a schmuck

If you have more in your life than the Chicago National League Ballclub, in his eyes, you’re not a real fan.

His statistical knowledge rivals Joe Morgan’s, and he makes excuse after excuse for Theriot. Not trying to start that debate, but every player makes mistakes — but the Riot gets a pass from Kap.

I think he’s got an inflated sense of importance, too.

I know, how do I really feel, right?

Being in the wrong position to field
Poor footwork

Apparently not.

Being older and knowledgable, he is not a home run, but he may be a ground rule double. Possibly a bloop single.

The young

The anti Theriot crowd keeps putting him down and says he has no value. Anyone who says that only cares about homeruns.

Kaplan has bashed Theriot too but he doesn’t make it 24/7.

You obviously don’t read a word of anything I’ve ever written on the subject of Ryan Theriot. Because of all the criticisms I’ve ever leveled at Theriot’s play, I don’t think the phrase “home run” has come up.

And if you’re really uninterested – or simply unable – to follow the specifics of the criticism that some of us level at Theriot, you really don’t have any business commenting on it. There’s no need for a strawman arguement with a bit of slander thrown in.

I take him with a grain of salt, but I like him

He’s a passionate fan, but he’s also towed the company line and made a million excuses over the years. He’s unbelievable optomistic about things, almost to a fault. And, like it was stated above, he’s really arrogant.

Now I’ll make excuses for him. He’s on the flagship station. He’s the sports guy on a huge radio station. He has to appeal to the masses. He has to answer questions for the casual and bandwagon fans that don’t know the game as well as some of us. I think he’d be much better if he were on the Score or ESPN and was targeting sports fans specifically rather than the lowest common denominator he addressess most of the time on WGN. I think he knows the game and knows sports well, but (like Santo, Harrelson, Harry Tinewitz (how do you spell that)…) sometimes his love of his team trumps unbiased journalism.

That said, I enjoy listening to him. I actually liked him more when he was with Tom Waddle (they played well off eachother), but if I’m in the car I’ll tune into Sports Central at night.

This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

by HectorVillanueva on Sep 3, 2008 11:16 PM CDT reply actions

This is pretty much how I feel about him, too.

I listen to Kap a lot, mainly because – relatively speaking – I find him one of the more reasonable sports radio guys I’ve come across. Please note that I wrote “relatively speaking.” He still has moments of ridiculous exagerration, and I certainly don’t agree with everything he says.

For example, IIRC, he was all-in on the Roberts trade, and he’s way too bullish on Theriot. Also, as others have pointed out, he gets a little too fanatical when it comes to being a Cubs fan. (And I’m saying that as a guy who spends a ridiculous amount of time on a Cubs blog.) Earlier in the season, for instance, he was admonishing people for not staying up until midnight to watch the West Coast games.

But he has been a genuine supporter of the team. And it’s nice to hear someone accentuate the positive more than dwell on the negative and look for any and every opportunity to take pot shots at Lou and the Cubs organization. Again, I’m not saying Lou or the Cubs are above criticism, but it’s nice to hear a relatively balanced approach once in a while.

To be honest, after last night’s game, I really needed to hear another human being tell me not to panic and not to completely abandon all hope. Had I been listening to the Score, I think I might have been tempted to hurl myself off the roof of my house into my wife’s azalea bushes.

I agree for the most part.

And in terms of true objective reporting, it is unhealthy for the Trib and WGN to be reporting on the Cubs. I will never be convinced that they don’t get messages from on high to be careful when they criticize the team. As a corporation, it would have to keep its public appearance positive. Letting employees bash part of it could lessen the value of the company, which is not good for the shareholders. And the management is responsible to the shareholders. I think it’s private now, but it wasn’t in the recent past.

Lucky to have a job

This week I really got fed up with him, when I heard him berating fans who feel that the Cubs may not go to the playoffs. As a lifelong fan, I feel he is way overboard when he says such things. A fan is a fan. Part of being a fan is feeling down when they lose as well as being up when they win. If you weren’t a fan, losses wouldn’t bother you. But yet he lets callers on and then sets himself up as the only Pure Cub Fan by putting them down. This feeds his own self-image.
I am going to repeat in different ways what’s been previously said. Kaplan bleeds Tribune (not Cubbie) blue. He will say things about Cubs management that may sound negative, but when he interviews the same people, he throws them softball questions. Like tonight, he questioned Soriano’s hustle, being, correctly, critical of him and his approach to the game. But if he had a chance to interview Piniella or Soriano, he would never ask either of them about Soriano’s approach to the game. All of his questions, I feel, are framed so as not to offend the interviewee, because Kaplan has to keep that guy as a potential guest in the future. All the Tribune sports people are like that (with the possible exception of Jim Memolo). If you have ever heard any of them talk to Randy Hundley, especially during the Todd Hundley years, you never heard a negative word about Todd (and Todd Hundley was the worst everyday player I have ever seen in my 40 years of watching baseball). That’s because they wanted to keep Randy happy. That’s Kaplan’s approach to all his guests. And then each guest is called “my guy.”

And as a communicator, he is awful. He has two words to describe anything. Any regular listener knows they are “ridiculous” and “phenomenal.” And his affected way of speaking, emphasizing every other syllable, is annoying. I’ve heard him talk in other settings and he doesn’t do that, so it’s put on for some reason.

If you write to him to criticize him, he’ll tell you nobody else agrees with you the critic. That’s because he is narrowing his audience down to only those who agree with him. The rest of us are fed up.

I know I over react to him, but he’s indicative of the problem with WGN. The whole station is a big disappointment. It could be so much better than it is, but too often it settles for mediocrity. It’s gotten away with it for so long, winning in the ratings, that it doesn’t have to try to be better. And they don’t.

Aren’t you glad you asked?

Kaplan Too Negative About Negative Fans

I think you can be a real Cubs fan and be very concerned that the Cubs won’t make the playoffs. I think you can be a real Cubs fan if you’re worried about a potential playoff matchup with the D-Backs. I think you can be a real Cubs fan if you boo Bob Howry when he gets lit up,. Kaplan doesn’t think you can be a real Cubs fan doing those things.

Kaplan can accuse the fans of being too negative but don’t accuse them of not being real Cubs fans. Most of his listeners can remember 2004. Some can remember 1969. They have reason to be skiddish. I can hear the fans’ anguish loud and clear through the reception that fades in and out on my finely tuned radio at night.

For the record, I still think the Cubs will win the division. The 1989 team had to survive a 6-game losing streak that August. The 1984 team had to weather a 5-game losing streak that September. This 2008 team will recover from this losing streak., but I can’t blame some fans for being negative right now. To close, I think there are more positive Cubs fans out there than negative ones right now despite the losing streak.

…but I love when he does to many of them. I am surprised at some of the callers that get through a lot of the time with their out of this world assumptions and ideas. Also, it seems like win or lose the majority of callers to the station have lots of things to complain about. I am convinced if the Cubs won the WS half the calls that night would be negative about something. Oddly enough, last night while driving home, there were more positive calls than I have heard after a win! One of the callers last night though, was absolutely immature and brutal. If Kaplan didnt hang up on him im sure all we would have heard were bleep outs. I have never heard someone yell as loud as that guy did.

He probably shouldn’t take listener calls because he doesn’t have thoughful responses to make the calls and his conversation with some of the callers something that adds to the listening experience. This might be because he is not a quick thinker, he might be overemphasizing moving on to the next caller. He could very well have less to say about the Cubs, or any of the other sports, than does a listener who follows the sport. He did better with a partner, but Waddle wasn’t that good either.

Why on earth would somebody want to make as many comments as he does about Cub fans. Somebody at the station should clue him in or poll the listeners to find out how many want to hear comments about Cubs fans and what they should do or be like. That is plain stupid.

As far as the SCORE is concerned, not all of their talk hosts are created equal. I think some are really good, but unfortunately the best specialize in football. I’ve always liked what Bufone has to say about the Bears. I like Lawrence Holmes too; he might get even better with more seasoning. Boers and Bernstein get tiresome, but sometimes they are very funny. They also usually do a good job with callers.

What about Matt Abbatacola?

I used to be his youth leader in church youth club. We’re really not in contact so don’t worry about your opinion if it’s negative.

Matty

I think Matty has a future. Kaplan may be getting a cohost and Matt is supposedly their top candidate.

Wow.

Those are two very different personalities. Matt is free-spirited and naturally wacky. Dave can get somewhat uptight, you might say, at times. But if they recognize that and let each other be who they are, it could work and probably very well. Kaplan needs a partner to give listeners like me a relief from what I consider a harshness and arrogance. I thought Waddle did that. I like listening to his podcast with Silverman.

Haven't listened to Abbatacola that much

…to be reacting to his dialogue and overall ability to get those tuning-in to want to listen. The last time I listened to him, for more than a minute or two, he was going through a Cubs fan/Sox fan thing that I didn’t think had much point and wasn’t interesting to me. He wasn’t condescending though.

I don’t know how much radio voice matters these days, but I don’t think Abbatacola has an ideal radio voice. He sounds like Jim Rome to me. It seems Rome has his following though; enough to be successful.

Kaplan could use a partner. A younger person is a good idea. Depending on their chemistry that could work and the voice issue matters much less when there is another person.
