Pennant = Armageddon?
As I was watching the financial markets melt down yesterday and thinking of the recent confrontation with Russia over Georgia (and perhaps Iran to come) I couldn't help but thinking back on W.P. Kinsella's short story "The Last Pennant before Armageddon".
It appears in an anthology called "The Thrill of the Grass" and I reread it last night. I was even more struck that the story has the Cubs playing the Dodgers in a five game series in October, albeit for the pennant (this was before the expansion of the playoffs).
I can't believe I'm the only one musing over the coincidences, am I?

Not telling
I have been thinking of it all season myself. I URGE EVERYONE to get a copy. One thing that is funny and won’t spoil it is Kinsella’s introduction explaining how he came to write the story. He was doing a radio show and a caller asked what would it take for the Cubs to Win a World Series. Did the world have to end ?
Kinsella is a really wonderful writer. LAST PENNANT is the best fiction I know re the Cubs but his other stories and novels are equally wonderful including the title story in the collection THE THRILL OF THE GRASS.

You know how I know the Cubs will win it all...
It quite obvious that hell is about to freeze over and I’ve been told all these years that hell will freeze over before the Cubs win it all. I still havent seen any flying pigs, but it isnt for a lack of effort.

Let's hope this chair is empty at the end of October.

Sad, but humorous.
I like how even Satan himself looks a little dejected.

As one of the resident theologians on BCB
I’ve searched the relevant Scripture passages and can assure you that the Chicago Cubs are mentioned nowhere in the Bible—Old Testament or New. In fact, contrary to popular belief, baseball isn’t mentioned in Scripture either.
So, for all who were thinking to themselves, “man, I really wish the Cubs would win the World Series…but that end-of-the-world thing would really be a bummer,” fear not. You can still cheer for our beloved Cubbies and still live long enough to savor a WS victory for years!

Spiritual Cubs
I’ve been told it’s improper to pray for a win.
My cousin got married the day before the NFC title game and our cousin who is a Deacon in the catholic church compromised by praying for “Rex to be strong and accurate of arm and the defense to stand tall” and added afterwards “And we all know if Rex is Good Rex we will beat the Saints easy!”

Nostradamus
Nostradamus said
“The day will come in the new millenium when the team of little bears by the big lake in the 3rd city of the new world take the prize which has been denied them 100 years hence. They will play with courage, fire and style and the final 2 needed heroes will come from an island just off the land’s coast and the land of the Rising Sun” (referring to Soto being from Puerto Rico and Fukudome Japan)

Wallpaper
I had computer wallpaper for awhile that had the devil standing around he double hockey sticks covered in snow announcing “The Cubs won the world series”
My parents promised me a pony when I was 6 when the Cubs win it all. Believe me I am calling and demanding the pony!
(Knowing my Dad he’ll get a stuffed pony)
