Z: Rotator Cuff Tendinitis, WILL pitch again
Carlos Zambrano has undergone an MRI today on his right arm, and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said he has rotator cuff tendinitis and if things go well will pitch in Houston during the series between Sept. 12-14.
The Cubs' right-hander was supposed to take the exam yesterday, but he couldn't do it because of family reasons.
Everyone take a deep breath. He'll be back. Life has not ended.

…and it sounds like he got some cortisone to calm things down. Now, he needs to give it absolute rest for a while to let that baby get better.

I'm guessing two to three weeks
I’ve had a cortisone shot twice, once in 1984 that shelved me for 3 weeks of the season and again last summer for nagging midle-age man ankle problem. Miracle stuff, but it takes time to come back. I hope the Cubs shutdown Zambrano completely for two weeks.

if they DL'ed him
they could bring him back on the 18th, in the middle of the Milwaukee series. Plus, he’d then be set up to pitch the last game of the year against Milwaukee (if it mattered), or skipped to set up a playoff rotation.

no point in DL'ing him with the rosters expanded...
unless the want to make a point of keeping him from pitching before he is ready.
My guess is that Z stays on the active roster

I agree...
…especially considering this is what shelved him earlier this season. I have had this same type of tendinitis and I tried to come back within a week after one cortisone shot and it flared back up again. I got a second one and was fine within 10 days. Every case is different, but since this has flared up twice this season, I don’t like the fact they are talking about him pitching by next weekend – which means he will be throwing on the side 2-3 times before than.

Wow girl... You are on top of it. I just heard this 5 minutes ago on the Score.
Good news. Good news. People need to realize that the suits aren’t misleading us, rather they are doing exactly what they said they were going to do with Harden when they acquired him- start from the end of the season, and work backwards- babying him as they go along. Now they are doing it with both Zambrano & Harden- not a bad thing. I want both of their arms rested and ready come post season.
This team hasn’t peaked yet. Which is a good thing. I have no doubt they will begin to peak in a couple of weeks & carry it into the postseason. Lou’s got a good handle on things. These last five wins don’t worry me, it just means that there is no where to go but up. Good news, good news…

Still, that is a good point.
The fact that Z is being shut down for the second time this season can’t be good. I just hope they can finesse him through the end of the season and, we hope, the playoffs and figure out how to mitigate his arm problems long-term during the off-season.

Correct...
…tendinitis is like the gift that keeps on giving if you don’t nip it in the bud and do the proper things to keep it at bay.
I’m not saying this is the case with Z, but sometimes they have to go in there (for guys with chronic tendinitis) and clean out some of the calcification etc. and give the cuff structure a little more room to operate without friction.
Hopefully, he gets it right and is on top of his game in a few weeks.

Excellent news but...
I was on ESPN.com when I saw the little report and I pulled up the blurb and it said:
CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano has right rotator cuff tendinitis and inflammation, an MRI confirmed, a blow to Chicago’s chances of winning the World Series for the first time in a century. Zambrano received a shot of anti-inflammatory medication and hopes to return to the rotation next week. General manager Jim Hendry said Zambrano is to start throwing again when the team begins a series in St. Louis on Sept. 10
Uhm…. so why exactly is this a “blow to Chicago’s chances of winning the World Series for the first time in a century”? Does anyone else get the feeling they wrote the story before knowing what was wrong with Z?

Carlos looked strong after a stint on the DL: in 6 starts (until the August problems), he was 4-1 with 40.1 IP and a 1.79 ERA, 11 BB, 30 K. More detailed info here

This is probably the best thing that
could have happened to him. If he had struggled through that game, he probably would have made his next scheduled start and might have really damaged something. Now they can sit him down, let him get some rest and come back strong and healthy. If it were me, I would only pitch him in couple of innings until the playoff unless it was absolutely necessary.

Yeah, this creates a huge opportunity...
…for Sean Marshall to step up and give this team some quality innings. I don’t think we can expect Sean to equal Carlos, but if he can keep the team in games and contribute to some wins, he can pave the way for Big Z to rejoin the staff very late in the season, if necessary, or definitely come playoff time.

A question to ponder
Does his hitting affect this at all? If so, does the team take the stand point to shut him down from hitting (i.e. no batting practice, only allowed to bunt during the game). He is more important to us to pinch and I would perfectly okay with him resting the bat on his shoulder if it could potentially contribute to aggrivating the injury.

I’d buy into the “hitting is the problem” theory… but its in the shoulder.
Maybe rein him in a bit, protect him from himself, but I don’t think that this is really related.

But at this point, if there is any chance it could aggrivate it, I don’t even want to take the chance. He is paid to pitch and not hit.
I don’t know what kind of torque a left handed hitting swing puts on his shoulder (i.e. rotator cuff) so I thought I would pose the question

I wonder if his next start is pending where the Cubs actually are in the standings. Meaning if come the Houston series the Cubs are at least 4 games up on the Brewers or (more importantly) 8 or more games up in the wild card if this start would be pushed back again. The Cubs obviously cannot take a playoff spot for granted but if they remain in a position where they’ve got a comfortable lead I could see Piniella and Rothschild continuing to rest Zambrano (and Harden),

Decision
Deciding what to do could be a very tough call if the Cubs have a good week now and put some more distance between them and the Brewers who have been losing themselves.
Have to get them some work before the playoffs but then you want them to get rest.
Either way I don’t think the Cubs want Z to even think about baseball this offseason.

I think
Zambrano needs to be shut down, as long as we can keep the Brewers (Astros?) at bay. His health is vital to our success in the playoffs. It’s been proven time and time again that pitching wins championships.
Our goal isn’t to get 100 wins, set a club record for home wins, set a pitcher HR record, etc. I say that he works out regularly, maybe throws a simulated game in place of his projected Houston start, and then start ONE more game this season.
I remember hearing Philips on ESPN last night comparing Zambrano’s situation to that of Curt Schilling’s. The Red Sox shut Schilling down the final month or so of the season. Schilling ended up going 3-0 in the playoffs.
I dunno, I just think that we need to be EXTRA cautious with him AND Harden. With Zambrano and Harden on the top of their games, with Dempster, Lilly and co. following, there is absolutely no reason the Cubs can’t go deep in the playoffs.
DeRosa: And who is the best and who is the worst card player?
Dempster: I think the best is yourself. [ . . .] I think the worst player is D-Lee. I think he bets every time just to bet.
by EJThunder on Sep 4, 2008 3:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'd be fine with that.
Here’s a question tho:
What happens if Harden’s soreness turns out to be something more? You can’t shut them BOTH down. Which one plays?

by drewishdrewid on Sep 4, 2008 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd have no problem shutting both of them down...
like I said though, as long as we can keep the division at bay. We have tons of pitchers, now, that can start.
Marshall, Gaudin, Lieber?, minor leaguers?
But if Harden is good to go I say he still goes out and pitches.
My proposal would be easier to swallow if the Cubs’ offense was still rolling on all cylinders.
DeRosa: And who is the best and who is the worst card player?
Dempster: I think the best is yourself. [ . . .] I think the worst player is D-Lee. I think he bets every time just to bet.

He's a professional player....
We aren’t placing him on the DL. Giving him rest isn’t a detriment, plus he could get a start before the playoffs.
Just because he wouldn’t be in the rotation doesn’t mean just sits on his ass in the dugout. He’ll continue to pitch, and stay sound pitching-wise.
I just think that it is in this teams best interest to have him completely healthy, ready to throw 100+ pitches in the playoffs.
DeRosa: And who is the best and who is the worst card player?
Dempster: I think the best is yourself. [ . . .] I think the worst player is D-Lee. I think he bets every time just to bet.

Absolutely right
Shutting him down until the playoffs is not a good decision. He needs to be sharp.
The one time I do remember this working was in 1998, when Wood missed the last month and then was very sharp in his one playoff appearance. But he was only able to go 5 or 6 innings, and the Cubs ended up losing.

There is no justice.
So the Brewers can go out there and throw Sabathia for 9 innings and 432 pitches with no residual effect and Z can go out there for 5-6 innings a start in August and start off September with his shoulder falling off. Grr. Harden has obviously been fun to watch so far, but I hate the prospect of holding my break every time he’s announced for a start the rest of the year.

But, this will catch up with Sabathia,
more likely…since he won’t be with the ‘crew next season….they don’t give a damn about his career at all. He’ll pitch till his arm falls off, and Yost won’t care.
If they win….well, great for them. If they don’t…..they may have wrecked a pitcher. If I was a GM, I’d sure think long and hard about signing him — and I wouldn’t give him over three years….
I guess possibly screwing around with a pitcher is OK in their eyes, because it’s probably this year — or nothing for the Brewers.
