Off day post: A Cheer for Scott McClain
While we kvetch about the Cubs stumble, I wanted to post something that brought a smile to my face today.
In a footnote to a dog-days of the season game between the Giants and the Rockies, former Cubs minor league Scott McClain hit his first big league homer. It came in his 19th season in baseball.
I don't know about you guys, but seeing a guy like that get his first homer is pretty cool. You can just feel how much it means to him to have done it, the hours of work that he has put in. It's a footnote to history, but a milestone for him.
McClain is 36, and his call up is clearly a reward for time well served in the minors. But still, as a baseball fan, I want to give a cheer for Scott McClain, who didn't give up on his dream.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

ESPN even did a nice
mention of him during sportscenter yesterday. Kudos to him for hanging in there.

Nice Job Scott
A happy post on a dreary day.
This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

McClain had a fantastic spring for the Cubs in 2005...
… one of the best springs I’ve seen anyone have. He won one game for Greg Maddux with a solo homer. He nearly made the club, but spent the year at Iowa where he hit 30 homers, and got a September callup.
He’s hit 287 minor league homers — maybe a real-life Crash Davis. Glad he got that first ML dinger.

Even better than Crash
Crash didn’t have any homers in the bigs
Good for him
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been . . . baseball.
