Off-Day Game Thread: Padres at Brew Crew, 7:05pm

Probable Pitchers:

113915_medium
Shawn Estes - #55 LHP
* (1-1) 3.33 ERA 14 SO
Estes, out since May 29 with a fractured left thumb, was activated from the disabled list on Monday. The 35-year-old will be a free agent after the season, and the Padres want to get a look at him as they move forward with an eye on 2009. Estes is 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in five games this season, including four starts.

122987_medium
Jeff Suppan - #37 RHP
* (10-7) 4.49 ERA 77 SO
Suppan capped off a stellar August with a seven-inning, two-run performance against the Pirates. The right-hander finished the month 5-0 and struck out twice as many batters as he walked. Suppan said he used the movement on his fastball to his advantage and mixed in a changeup to keep hitters off balance. He'll need to do the same against the Padres, against whom he is 5-3 with a 5.66 ERA in his career.

Tidbits
Estes flew out of Los Angeles before Wednesday's game at Dodger Stadium so that he didn't have to take the red-eye charter from Los Angeles to Milwaukee late Wednesday night. The Padres weren't due to get into Milwaukee until around 5 a.m.

Estes has been pretty good this year.

He helped us down the stretch in 2003. Maybe he can do us a favor again.

I see.

I can’t wait for the game tomorrow, I have a good feeling about it. It’ll be nice to talk to one of my high school baseball teammates whos also a cubs fan (ironically we met up at the braves-cubs game a month or so ago) and be able to talk about a win.

by cubsfaninatl on Sep 4, 2008 7:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Kind of doingboth

I’m waiting for McCain. I watch the big speeches from both sides myself instead of listening to the crap from the pundits. I watched the big speeches last week (Hillary, Biden and Obama) and now the ones this week (Guiliani, Palin, Lieberman and now McCain) but other than that have it on low waiting for something interesting.

He’s had so many, iIm not sure if’s due to the the foul ball — off his bat — that struck him in the nose and fractured it…and other nasal passages….

You know, Marquis may have to be our Estes...

It occurred to me when I saw this pitching matchup that Jason Marquis could play a very important role in the Cubs’ fortunes in September, a la Estes ‘03. He’s looked a lot better his last few starts, minus the ND against Washington, but even then, he cruised thru the first five innings. I think he’s up to it. Of course, his reward for that will probably be to be left out of the playoff rotation…

Not really fired...

contract was up — there were some talks…he’s not happy with the way things were going.
He was also paid more than EVERYBODY else. It’s more of a cost-cutting move by Clear Channel. Lee is a really nice guy, he isn’t his radio persona.

There are rumors of another sports station here.

No, a fourth -- or really 3rd station.

Rumors abound that ESPN 800, on a Mexican licensed station will come back across the border on a SD AM frequency. That station’s current conservative talk format will bump a music format on FM.

So, the market will still have 3 stations devoted to sports on a non-hard core sports town. Go figure.

Well, the Padres still draw...

..but the real test is next year. And, of course, the future of the Chargers is still somewhat hard to predict. I still don’t seem them leaving town. The Rams, Saints, Jags, Vikings…all with issues and could move…

Well, SDSJM

I remember listening to him when I first got to SD in ’94, and I came here from Phoenix when he was on KTAR out there.

I have always enjoyed his schtick, but maybe he could’nt adapt to the new internet/blog world we now live in.

He is a bit resistant to change.

And he’s (was) the oldest voice on the station. In youthful SD, that may not play as well any more. Unfortunately, XTRA Sports 1360 AM has…..no ratings. It’s barely measurable.
Overall, the station is better that XX Sports…but not quite as good as ESPN 800am — which nobody can hear, anyway.
