My God: A Repeat Of 2004? Or Even 1969??

Well, even with Lou getting lost yesterday, I still like him a helluva lot better than Dusty.  But I'm very concerned about this slump.  Sure, teams go through them all the time.  But the timing sucks.  They were on such a roll before this current losing streak.  Are they complacent?  Tired?  Lou's decisions seem really odd, but then again, he's been successful, so why challenge it?

I'm really worried about the pitching.  If the Cubs knew before August 31 that there might be issues, why didn't they go after someone?  I know the minor league recalls might help, but wasn't there anyone out there that could have stepped in?  It's not like they're losing close games.  They're getting killed.  Please let's hope they can hang on!  It's been such a great season!!

Let's get some runs!!

Would you rather be the D-Backs right now?

Every NL division leader lost ground yesterday. The baseball season is long. Two weeks ago the posts here were very cocky about how the Cubs were going to roll through the playoffs. A bit different now.

Everyone knew that September was going to be tough. If you can’t take it turn off the TV.

I was going to object about the pitching crack

because it’s the hitting that’s really doing them in, but it’s true – Cubs pitching has an ERA of 6.0 during the last six games. Even if the offense has only scored 2 runs per game on average during that time, it’s tough to win any games giving up that many every day.

The good news is that the trend of the last week is not indicative of that last, oh, 220 games or so that this team has played. They’ve had pitching slumps during that time. They’ve had team-wide hitting slumps like this as recently as July. They also had one last October, but they haven’t been too frequent otherwise, over the last five months and the last three months of last season.

Worrying about the pitching? Harden is exactly what we thought he was. Nobody has really been surprised that Zambrano, after all these years of being a horse, is showing some wear and tear, but did they need to get another guy before August 31? Dunno, Hendry was probably looking at Marshall, Lieber and Guzman and thinking one of these guys can step in and be a good swingman. OK, so Lieber may be what Lou thought he was in May, but if the other pitchers mentioned pitch according to their track records (even with Z lasting a little shorter during his starts), you’d think it wouldn’t reduce the team win rate that much.

There’s a lot of pressure on Marquis tonight, but I’m looking at the four (!) All-Stars in the line-up and expecting some increased production, like now.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

Keep this in mind.

Two weeks ago, the Dodgers looked dead, having lost eight in a row. Now they’ve won six straight and are on the cusp of first place.

The Cubs will turn it around.

I too feel we are to good a team to fold, everyone take a deep breath, like I’ve said on here more than once, it ain’t how you start, its how you finish!

The losing streak is a bummer....

…but we still have games left to play and we are still in first place. Lily had a stinker yesterday and the offense continues to slump. All the Cubs can do is go out and play today’s game and try and win it. The best thing for the Cubs to do is realize that the Brewers haven’t taken huge advantage of the slump and if we play better we are still in control.

This team does have a lot of depth and they have been able to win even through injuries to everyday players and SPs. It’s possible that players like Lee, Fukudome, and Soriano are feeling the cumulative affects of injuries over time and their age. But the team also has a lot of higher injury risk players and is relying on some older guys for key performance. Some of that is catching up to them but some of this is just a slump.

The games we won earlier have afforded us first place even with this slump now and there’ still time to win today’s game. All we need to do is win the gam that we play today.

The Wildcard would be the worst conclusion

So the playoffs are still in sight, so worst case scenario they have to settle for the wildcard and theyre still almost 30 games over .500

So better they slump now than in the NLDS

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Good night, what is with the panic in the house?

The Cubs have consistently won games and series like ringing a bell for the past four months .. they’ve amazed and dazzled every Cub fan alive and put swaggers in our steps as well.

Now they stumble .. the first losing streak of the whole blasted year, and we get this kind of reactionary freaking?

Come ON .. This stuff HAPPENS. Nobody can predict it. The Cubs certainly have been playing as if they weren’t planning it.

And please .. it’s only September SIXTH, for crying out loud .. Cool your jets!

The Cubs WILL win again. I and my family are going to be here rooting for them at GABP tonight and while I sit here at the Hampton Inn waiting to ride the shuttle over, I am sure that at this point, while certainly unsettling, we’ve still got a LOT of baseball to play.

So check the 1969 and 2004 references at the door. This isn’t those years. I’ve watched everything the Cubs have been doing SINCE then and I assure you, in case you haven’t noticed, the 2008 Cubs are a heck of a lot better than any of those teams. This team is going to snap it’s funk and I aim to see it happen tonight!

… but blast it, I left my jersey at home when I drove up here!

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Even if it is a replay of the past....

… there is nothing you or I can do about it. We aren’t winning or losing these games for the Cubs, so there is really no reason to get too upset about it.

Ok mixed feeling on tomorrow's game

Tomorrow (Sunday) is my 25th birthday. The Cubs have won only 9 times since I’ve been born and most of those happened in the 80’s.

Now at the same time I have to fly tomorrow. So far every time I’ve flown during a Cubs game they’ve won this year. I’m 8-0 when that happens.

So I think I have good luck on flights and due for a bday win so hopefully tonight we get a needed victory and make it 2 in a row tomorrow!

And my birthday present: Brewers playing Phillies for 4 games next week. We’re an absolute winner from that series regardless.

by ak123 on Sep 6, 2008 4:54 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

FWIW

The Cubs have also never won on my birthday, and I am 38. The hazards of being born in late October.

However, for the first time, there is a game scheduled for my birthday… October 30 – game seven of the World Series.

I really think

they need to come out and score first. I realize they did with the Soriano HR this week, but I think a nice early 2-3 run inning would produce some nice offense. Hopefully last night woke up a very mean sleeping giant. If not, they may have to get a hold of Mark Grace and line up the slump busters.

Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

cubs

who didnt expect this????it,s the cubs for gods sake.win 7 in a row and lose 6 and counting.against not very good teams.and everywhere i go i have to take shots from people telling me what losers the cubs are..im more concerned with getting to the postseason than winning the division.but sitting on your hands and going o for gives the next wildcard team a chance to rack up wins.very dissapointed in this team.if they,re sitting home in oct watching the rays in the playoffs maybe that will make them think. let,s hope not.

Because… why?

Best team in the NL
First place
and our longest losing streak is six games?

Get some facts straight

Not very good teams? Splitting a series with the Phillies was FINE. They’re a good team who had some good pitching.

Getting swept by Houston…while they’re not going to October maybe you should do some research. They won 21 games in August. I think that was the best record for the month out of any team. They’re hot right now and well they played better.

Losing to the Reds…well that shouldn’t happen. However Reds have been making it hell for every contending team this year. They took 2 of 3 from Cards and Brewers a few weeks back.

So relax from your pessimistic attitude. We all weren’t happy with how they played but I’d rather see it this week than in the post season.

Would a repeat of '04 or '69 be soo bad?

In ’69 we landed on the moon (!!!!!) and in ’04 NASA landed a rover on Mars…

In all seriousness, its easy to find parallels to other seasons, but its important to remember that the 2008 season is the one and only 2008 season. Relax.

I did not want to start a new thread for this but ......

Are the Astros this years Rockies?

They are 75-67, in there last 10 they are 9-1 only 7 games out of the wildcard, I dont think they will catch the Brewers but I think they will catch the Cards and get close to the Phillies.

What does everyone else think?

I wish it were winter so we could freeze it into ice blocks and skate on it and melt it in the spring time and drink it!

They are who I have been thinking about all day. If I were going to bet some long odds, I would do it on them winning the NL via the wildcard route.

I could as easily see the Brewers implode as the Mets did last year and some fear the Cubs will this year so i thing the WC is not out of their reach so long as they keep playing at this level the rest of ride. And, yes, they would be compared to the Rockies last year.

11 games

11 games behind the CUbs 7 behind the Brewers and behind the Cardinals as well.

They’d have to leap over the Cardinals and Brewers and Phillies to take the wild card and over the Cardinals Brewers and cubs for the wild card.

You know how everyone says Pennants aren’t won in April and May? That’s true but pennants are LOST in April and May.

Go Cubs

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.
