New Blog: Five For Howling - for Coyotes fans Bar-right-arrows

Maybe I was out of the loop for this

I called the Chicago Hilton today asking about Cubs Convention tickets and rooms because I had read nothing via email about the event (and I usually get something).  It had dawned me it I usually have my room booked by now.

Being out of state I don't see flyers or read any articles about impending tickets on sale and I didn't see it on Cubs.com (even though there is a link that said they went on sale in March).

Well unfortunately it turns out the hotel is completely sold out.  I might be the only one who had no idea rooms went on Sale last March (or just plain forgot!).  I had almost counted on finding something on here telling us rooms are available but I must have missed that too.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news for a fun event but if you were looking to stay at the Hilton that weekend and don't have a room yet, you're in the same boat I'm in and outta luck.

*They will sell tickets on cubs.com in the next few months according to Hilton for people not staying at the hotel.

Um I booked mine in mid- July

My first time staying at the Hilton. I decided it was worth the indulgence even if I could stay
with mom in Lincoln Park. Getting tickets is a nightmare though I managed too in the past and my sister & nephew are splitting the room with me so not that expensive.

I'm staying at other Hilton

It’s their sister hotel which is cheaper and I’ll get tickets when they go on sale no questions asked. I’m sharing this because I’m sure I’m not alone with this.

Don't remember number now

But it’s Palmer House as listed below. The lady at the front desk of the Hilton gave me the information. I printed out my confirmation with all the info but I’m not by that computer right now.

Well if you are not staying at the Convention Hilton

I would probably shop around for a better deal than any Hilton. But is the "other " Hilton t he Palmer House ? I thought they bought it out. If so it is nice historic place to stay.

Good luck getting those tickets when they go on sale though.

Yes Palmer House

It’s close by…and I know I want to be close to the hotel because those lines start up at 6AM (which I always think is crazy!)

Curious

How much is it this year?

Actually your 3 passes would be 150 anyway and you could probably sell the 4th one.

That was a big reason I did the Hilton

I don’t “live” in Chicago but Mom does. However since I am splitting the room and getting tickets I decided it was worth it. Also I really LOVE to swim and I rarely get the chance so I plan to spend time
in the Hilton pool. I also plan to avoid eating in their overpriced restaurants. The Starbucks has an INSANE mark up. Lastly I am kind of glad I won’t have to commute as it was FREEZING the last few times I went.

They do open up more rooms as we get closer to the convention

You just need to call once in a while. There will be no rooms on a Monday, and then a dozen rooms open on Tuesday.

Pretty standard. I worked in reservations for years. Rooms are added to the block at several intervals. Only the reservations dept. knows when. Sometimes you can even luck out and get a “cool” person on the phone that will let you know the deal. they will tell you there are no rooms now, but some will be added (they will tell you the date) and you can call back then and book. You may not be able to get a King for example, but they will get you a room.

Good luck.

I attended one Cub Convention a few years ago....NEVER again

Talk about a collection of drool monkeys and doorknobs. The creepiest, weirdest assortment of people in one room I have every laid eyes on. It’s like going to a combined Star Trek and Steve Erkl conventino. No, I DON’T think it is fine for a 350 pound guy in his 30’s to be walking around adorned in 247 pieces of Cubbie flair. Or for three 98 pound geeks in their 20’s to knock over an old lady while in hot pursuit of Randy Hundley to get his autograph. What possible purpose on earth does the Cub Convention serve in this day and age?!? Wrigley Field is STILL going to have 3 million attendees and there is such a thing as the 24/7 news cycle and the Internet to keep abreast of offseason developments with the Cubs.

This isn't 1969...is this 1969?...this isn't 1969, is it?

funniest thing I've seen on here in a looooong time.

Granted I rarely frequent here anymore, but regardless, that had me wishing I’d not taken a sip of my beer as I began to read your comment.

FWIW, I’ve never been to a Cubs convention so I don’t know if your account is accurate or not, but it still had me choking on my Fat Tire. It’s amazing what a Cubs W

Depends

I was going to stop going and then I had the kids and they love it. 2 years ago my oldest saw Ronnie Woo Woo and said “That man isn’t right”

That said as stated below we’re missing it this year.

I like the seminars.

Supposedly if Dempster is still a Cub he might be doing a stand up routine on Saturday evening.

LOL

Credit where credit is due – this post reminds me of that SNL skit in which William Shatner goes off on an audience full of Trekies. I’m not sure I agree with you, MDBNIU. I’ve never attended a Cubs convention and probably won’t this year, but I enjoy seeing (and hearing from) the players and management in the dead of winter. It gives me some hope that spring will arrive again. Nonetheless, I must admit, part of me recoils at the unabashed geekdom that shows up at the convention.

you're not too far off on this

But some of us who don’t live in Illinois use this weekend to get a chance to spend time with Cubs fans…something that’s missing 51 other weekends of the year.

It serves as a chance to actually ask questions

I have put both Hendry and Frank Maloney( head of ticket sales) on the hot seat every year I have had a chance. I respect both of them and Henry is especially adept at avoiding direct answers but it is well worth it. I also enjoy thevarious panels with players, coaches etc. A great deal of interesting stuff comes up if you are a serious fan. I admit my “guilty pleasure” is the panel of the two women gossip writers who ask players silly questions. It is a hoot. I also adore the questions from children. They are both funny and bizarre . I get an autograph if I like the player and the line is no more than 15 minutes but hardly any priority. Yes there are plenty of geeks but there are also a lot interesting and fun things. I avoided it for 20 years until 2006.

Remember it is a CHARITY event so no one does it for the money

I went to that…found it funny but probably won’t do it again. Didn’t need to hear about DeRosa’s and Theriots manscaping.

It was worth it just to see the look on Juan Pierre

He looked like the ultimate dear in headlights and he has such a tiny head it just cracked me up.
It all silly stuff and a few of the guys are stupid but most are pretty funny.

Reservations

We are going to a bar mitzvah in California that weekend of a family friend’s son so we knew we’d miss it.

I feel kind of bad about this because usually I check with a friend with Hilton reservations and she gives me a heads up when the convention is close to being sold out and I post a message here and other Cubs boards.
