Off Day Fun: A single change to the game

With the addition of instant replay to the game, I got to thinking, what other things could change about baseball to make it better?

So my question to you all is, what would you change about the game of baseball?  From the simplest rule change to something huge.  I'm just interested in your thoughts.  Some examples include Al's oft mentioned let the batter appeal to first base on a check swing.  Something a bit larger would be adding more to instant replay.  Or even something relating to umpires variant strike zones.  Or the infamous "technical balk" promoted at one time by a poster here.

Please, please, please:  If your answer is "nothing, the game is perfect" please don't post.  I'm interested in changes you'd make.  However, I don't wish to discourage you from arguing that a potential change may go too far or is a bit out of place (eg  "technical balk").

My change: I'd like to see something implemented to standardize the strikezone somewhat.  I hate how one pitch can be a strike and the next pitch, which is identical, is a ball.  I don't know how to implement it though.  I leave that to those of you who are far more informed than I, which is 90% of you.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I would eliminate the divisions and the wild card concept...

Just have the top four teams in each league go to the playoffs. Eliminate inter league play and have everyone play everyone else in your league the same number of games. Just even the field for everyone. For example, this year, conceivably, you could have the top 4 records all come out of the NL Central. If that’s the case, those should be the teams in the playoffs.

Some of the teams that dont draw fans need to go. Distribute some of that talent to teams that want to see them play.

Intentional walk

Don’t require any pitches in order to intentionally walk a hitter. Yes, occasionally a pitch gets away and the
runner(s) move up. Rarely, a batter tries to swing at the pitch and even less frequently gets a hit. But most of the time, it is wasted time. Better would be for the catcher to say to the umpire “We’d like to give the batter first base.” or something like that and the umpire would say “Take your base!”

by cliff on Sep 8, 2008 9:58 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I like this one a lot

It’s simple. It speeds up the game.

Con: the batting team would like the pitcher to use those pitches (up his count) even if it is a half-assed pitch. It throws off the pitcher’s rythm to use those weak pitches.

the only reason that they “have to do that,” is because they want to get as many first games of the season on national television to gain the most money possible.

No, that's not the reason at all.

It’s because of potential weather problems in northern cities. This has been the case for more than 25 years, long before ESPN was doing games — look, for example, at the 1982 Cubs schedule.

I hate when a SS is 3 feet from touching the bag, but still get’s the double play call. Drives me nuts.

by digitalbenjamin on Sep 8, 2008 10:30 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No

The umps purposely give middle infielders this call to help keep them from getting injured.

If MI had to stay planted on the bag 100%, there would be a lot more busted knees which nobody wants.

Generally, the middle infielder touches the bag at some point during the play, but doesn’t always have his foot 100% on the bag when he actually catches the throw. It’s rarely like the guy never was on the bag.

I realize why the rule is in place...

but to me, it is too wishy washy. I’ve seen too many times where the MI never touches the base (at any time) and then still give the DP. All I ask is that there is a firm rule in place… and I don’t feel there is one now.

For just one series against the White Sox. Make it a 4 gamer and have two at wrigley and two at the cell and be done…

I would venture to say that the white sox are going to be a better team than the Royals are 90% of the time. It is just ludicrous that a rival in your division gets to play a perennial loser 6 times a year and you get to play a team that is mostly going to field a competitive team year in and year out.

Inherited Runners

I’ve never loved the fact that all inherited runners that comes around to score are charged to the pitcher that allowed them to reach base.

I’ve thought for a while that it may be more fair if the run was charged to the pitcher who allowed the runner to reach scoring position. I don’t like how a starter might give up a two out single, a reliever comes in and gives up back to back hits to allow the runner from 1st to score, and that run is pinned on the starter.

by WittyUserName on Sep 8, 2008 11:04 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A few...

… my big one is getting rid of interleague play. Here are a few smaller recommendations, too

- If a player gets hit and charges the mound, he (or his subsequent replacement) does not get first base. Its an out.

- While teams are allowed to expand their roster to 40 on Sept 1st, they still may not play with more than 25 on a given day. They must include the 25 with their starting line-up. If teams are limited to 25 players for 5 months, I don’t see why this should change.

- Home field advantage for the WS goes to the team w/ the better record in interleague play. Making an exhibition game impact the world series is inane.

by Arbusto on Sep 8, 2008 11:27 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It should just be the team with the better record.

Using the ASG for the decider is nuts. But of course, look who decided to do that after his disastrous tie game. Explains a lot.

Why not just alternate like they used to?

Looking at overall records is not at all a fair comparison for two teams with drastically different schedules (unbalanced schedules in different leagues). I never saw what was wrong with just alternating home field advantage every year. Sure it’s arbeitrary, but so is life at times.

Switch-hitting

All position players need to switch hit at least once per game. :) Think of the strategic decisions! Do you hit with your off-hand early to get it out of the way, or do you hope that you’ll have a lead late and won’t “need” a hit?

I haven’t worked out the details yet, and this is just a fun suggestion based on the name of the fanpost. There are loopholes aplenty in the concept, but ah well.

I would say for switch hitters

they have to pick a side of the plate before the game and stick to it. If they pick left against a starting righty, then later in the game when a lefty reliever comes in, they have to stay on the left side of the plate.

My choices

Pitcher must pitch or throw to first within X seconds of getting the ball back. Batter can call time only once per X pitches.

No DH, anywhere ever.

If a pitcher makes an error that leads to a run, that run should count against the pitcher’s ERA.

Blown Save Stat

If it has to be stat, make is such that it is only caculated for the person attempt to get the last out with one exception. I hate it when a reliver guy comes in the 6th inning of a game gives up the tie running and all of a sudden he has a blown save. To think he was saving the game in the 6th inning is crazy. The blown save stat should be reserved for the individual who came in to get the last out of the game. The one exception is this: If a guys comes into the middle of the “last” inning with runners on and he allows the tieing run to score, he should not be charged with the blown save…it should be the guy who let the runner get on.

a Few

1. Replace Bud Selig
2. Remove balls and strikes calls from umps, most of the tech is already in place with the questec cameras.
3. Remove DH, which I cant see happening, sadly, but both leagues show play by the same rules

by JPetey on Sep 8, 2008 1:45 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My choices...

1) Eliminate the DH – the other option is to institute it into the NL but seriously, the fact that the AL is “tougher” for pitchers because they don’t have an easy out messes with the system. It also leads to a slightly unfair advantage in interleague/World Series play for both teams. NL teams visiting AL parks have bench guys as DHs and AL teams going to NL parks have to find a way to get their DH on the field. If you can’t play baseball…all aspects of it…then you shouldn’t be playing.

2) Create AND enforce speed up rules. A batter must keep one foot in the box at all times and may only step completely out once per AB (maybe for 3B coach signals). Pitchers must remain on the mound at all times between pitches and once a batter has both feet in the box must have at least 1 foot on the rubber and begin his delivery within 8-10 seconds or the batter gets an automatic ball. Also, a batter who steps out of the box more than allotted would get an automatic strike.

3) Enforce the strikezone. It amazes me to no end that a pitch can just off the outside corner can be called a strike (Ramirez AB yesterday) just because the count is 3-0 and the ump is giving a pitchers strike, but the same location (a few of Marshall’s pitches) are called balls because the count is 1-1 or 1-2. If the count is 3-0 and the pitch isn’t a strike it isn’t a strike. Give him his base and move on.

4) Fix the schedule. Why is there an Opening Day, followed by a day off? What does it do? Who is it for? Didn’t the teams rest up enough the few days before OD? Is OD really that stressful? The main problem is that it’s a off-day when it’s not needed and shifting the schedule might give them an extra day sometime else…like say mid-July or August during a 20 games in 20 days stretch in 5 cities.

4a) Let humans make the schedule. Eliminate one Cubs-Sox series and alternate home-away 3 game sets each year. Let humans make the schedule. Keep the unbalanced schedule but skew closer to the middle. As it is the Cubs play the Reds 627 times and the Mets 6. Make interdivision teams 12-15 to allow the Cubs-Mets rivalry to reopen, Cubs-Phillies, Cubs-Marlins, etc. I understand the concept but its skewed too far to one direction and as it is, the Braves, Marlins, Rockies, etc are relegated to a similar status as interleague games. The Cubs see the White Sox as many times. Somethings wrong there.

If you have two top contenders in the division having a relatively similar schedule, then for 3 games Cubs are playing the Rays, and Brewers are playing the Royals….

…How can this possibly be considered fair? If these teams are anywhere close at the end of the season, the Royals could possibly put the Brewers ahead of the Cubs.

I don't know how that's interleague play's fault

Do the Cubs and Brewers play all the same teams the same amount of time otherwise?

Or the Cubs catch the Mets at a hot streak and Brewers catch the Phillies on a cold streak. Well, we shouldn’t have to play those teams because they’re two completely different teams at different times of the season. Completely unfair!

I personally enjoy interleague play because I like seeing the Cubs play some of those other teams that they don’t normally see. It’s fun seeing new players, etc.

I think someone already mentioned this, but it bears repeating...

I have only one suggestion...

…but it is the suggestion I use to improve all sports*.

Land mines.

*Except Nascar. Instead, they get ramps. And possibly giant rings of fire.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Land mines more fitting for NASCAR

Best change that could happen to NASCAR is it’s elimination.

by Arbusto on Sep 9, 2008 7:35 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True.

But ramps give the possibility of air crashes. That might actually make me watch.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

What we have here is... failure to communicate

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been . . . baseball. It rules over America like an army of steamrollers." Terrance Mann

In keeping with that theme

I think the catcher should be able to shoot any runners trying to steal. The only problem is restrictions on the weapon type. We can’t have the catchers shooting down runners with a grenade launcher. The weapon should require some accuracy.

How about electroshocking umps who blow calls? They mess with the strike zone, ZAP! Alternatively, just let the catcher elbow the ump in the nuts.

All fielders should be able to tag runners with a taser. If the runner is still conscious after the play, he’s safe. To make things even, the runners should run the bases with the bat.

Girls with very short shorts and very long legs should come out every half inning with a sign indicating the inning, a la boxing.

Beer should no longer be served at games. If you can’t handle corn whiskey, go home to your mommy.

The second baseman and shortstop should NOT be allowed to stretch neck high cables across the infield. If they feel the need to decapitate a baserunner, they can use a chainsaw like everyone else.

Larger players (who shall remain nameless) may use a scooter for running the bases. Mounting projectile firing weapons should not be permitted although the use of a lance is acceptable.

Fans may not bring weapons into the park including guns, grenades, swords, bows and arrows, spears, torches, leaf blowers, rolling pins, etc. Leave the violence on the field where it belongs.

Anyone here every play Pigskin 621 A.D.?

You...

…are a GENIUS.

A lot of great stuff, although the thing I laughed at hardest was the corn whiskey.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Leaf blowers?

Now, that might be fun.

Differentiate between Starter Wins and reliever wins.

Or get rid of reliever wins altogether. If you need to pitch 5 innings as a starter to get a win, why can you pitch 1/3 of an inning and get a win? It makes a useless statistic even sillier, when you have relievers with win-loss records. they don’t mean anything.

That's always

bothered me that a starter can throw a great game, leave with the lead, and the bullpen gets the win if they blow the lead. I thought there was something about scorer’s discretion, but if there is, you never see it.
