i went to confession
it worked last year when we lost 3 or 4 straight. i'm not sure exactly when but it was the same weekend as the texas a&m fresno game i believe. i figured it would work again so i went saturday and it did work saturday but of course yesterday we lost. however i have power again :D
just doing my part to provide all the positive mojo i can.
if ike looks like it's headed this way i swear i am driving straight to wrigley field and sleeping under the bleachers.
i hate hurricane season.

Alas Jews don't have Confession
We just kvetch A LOT but that pretty much defines BCB so I don’t think I have to anything
special for that. I did notice that Yom Kippur , the holiest of Jewish holidays falls on Oct 9
this year which we all HOPE will be a home game at Wrigley. While I have some friends
( Al included) who may feel some guilt about attending (though it will probably be over by game time) . So here is hoping that I will be atoning at Wrigley.

No guilt here.
I’ll atone with you.

So will Brad Ausmus
I know I posted this some years ago but my favorite story about playing baseball on Yom Kippur
is when Brad Ausmus who is Jewish was asked about it because 9/11 had pushed the season back and he ( along with nice Jewish boy Jason Marquis) was playing a game on Yom Kippur. Ausmus
said " I am atoning for my bad first half of the season".

Nice story. I guess Ryan Braun would do the same thing.
Gabe Kapler has a bunch of tattoos in Hebrew and a Star of David tattoo but according to Wikipedia:
In 2004, when Shawn Green of the Dodgers announced that he would not play on Yom Kippur, the Boston media asked Kapler if he would do the same thing. Kapler called a Boston-area rabbi for advice. With the Curse of the Bambino still hanging over Red Sox fans’ heads, the rabbi reportedly said: “Do it! We need all the help we can get!” Kapler decided to play…but went 0-4, with four strikeouts.
What would Kevin Youkilis do?

Youkilis would play
While I understand Green’s dilemma I think he handled it poorly. What he ACTUALLY did was
skip the day portion of day/night double header on Yom Kippur ( it might have been the other way round) which was both half assed and a little suspect as he skipped the game in which a pitcher who owned him was starting. His team was in the heat of the race and he was not religious . He wanted to follow in the footsteps of Hank Greenberg who also was not religious but considered himself ( correctly) as major example to the public for Jews, Koufax did the same. However times are different and I don’t think of Shawn Green as the public face of Jews and IF he really believed that he should have taken BOTH games off.
I sort of lost track but there are a record number of Jewish players in the MLB right now at
least 10. While I can’t claim to be an expert from what I know our own Jason Marquis is the only one likely to attend services on the high holidays. Many are half Jewish and some are more “connected” than others. Mike Lieberthal who played until last year constantly requested ( politely ) that he NOT be included on a list of Jewish baseball players. His father was Jewish but he was raised Christian and did not wish to be considered Jewish. Cub killer David Newhan on the other hand was raised Jewish but is a practicing Born Again Christian who DOES want to be considered “Jewish” at least for his background.
Too much trivia for an off day.

Hear about David Eckstein?
He was invited or awarded some Jewish acclimation after the Cardinals World Series. He was a guest on Leno or Letterman and asked him why he turned it down. His response “Well it’s quite simple, I’m not Jewish”. It was pretty fun.

Same thing with Mike Jacobs of the Marlins.
They had a day there honoring the Jewish community and had Jacobs take part, only to have him tell them he isn’t Jewish.
You’d think they might have asked him first.

Only thing funnier
Would have been if they created baseball cards for them in the Jewish Ball Player collection!

My father and I had the same discussion
If we had tickets to game one of playoffs in Chicago. They would be 10/1 the night after Rosh Hashanah ends. He wouldn’t and I wouldn’t fly during the day to get to Chicago for the game.

I'm with you.
I went to Church for the 1st time for a couple of months. A bit of Catholic guilt kicking in. I guess it takes a couple of days for the act to kick in. I’m sitting here hoping it starts tomorrow.

...
my birthday is sept. 30th (usually the last week of the season) so my birthday is either really crappy or really happy.
last year we clinched on the 29th. so it was a fun one.
i’ve had some miserable birthdays. in 04 my mom ordered me an ernie banks jersey on the 25th from the day she ordered it til the day it came in we lost 7 out of 8 and were out of playoff contention.
my stuff is filthy

Eww, i feel guilty for this year.
My mom was gonna give me a “W” flag for Christmas, and last Saturday i was telling her that the had them at Dick’s for like 17$. Go figure, she already had one for me. she gave it to me early (last saturday). Last saturday was our 1st loss of the streak. I put the flag back in the box. it didnt work. =/
