In the grand BCB tradition of jumping on a relatively minor story just to see my name appear in the Fanpost bar, I submit the following for your consideration: According to this story in today's Sun-Times, Jon Lieber has finally succumbed to an odd assortment of nagging injuries plaguing his 38-year-old frame and returned to Mobile, Alabama. The Cubs have shut him down for the season.
He concludes 2008 (and possibly his career) with a 4.05 season ERA and a 4.27 career ERA. He began the season in the running for the fifth rotation spot, settled for a role in the bullpen as a long man and contributed relatively little from then on out.
He did have a number of somewhat decent relief outings early on (April through June), but it doesn't really seem like he or his effectiveness in Lou's eyes ever really recovered from his disastrous May 7 outing against the cursed, cursed Reds. In that game, he gave up four home runs and five earned runs total in a mere two innings of work. As mentioned, he's also suffered from a number of minor injuries - including a sore foot that he had operated on during the off-season.
So let's use this fanpost as a forum for sharing our thoughts and memories of the Cubs last 20-game winner - an apparently good clubhouse guy and a Jim Hendry longshot who never really panned out. Auf wiedersehen, Herr Lieber!
