Available SP???
We already heard that Hendry is looking to acquire a SP. Also, it's quite obvious that the Cubs would rather have Marshall as a spot starter/LRP. However, its difficult to find a solid # 3-4 starter in the free agency/trade market besides Lowe (too much $$$), Pettite (also too much $$$), and JP (well, you know the story).
Both Bedard (injury prone) and Greinke (last yr rumored avialable SP) are off the market. Thoughts on who might be available on the tight trade market?

Well unfortunately both Estes and Rusch are taken
Dodgers signed Estes and Rockies signed Rusch ( minor league deals). Unless Cedeno and Pie are going to
get you a decent SP I don’t any trade likely. I would love to sign Sheets if he would do a contract which would only
vest at say 160 IP but not holding my breath.

Well..
Both Estes and Rusch are not the SP that I was looking for considering both are number 5 SP at best.
You know, if the Cubs were going to trade off Marquis, I think they should have signed Brad Penny. He recently got injured and I think he could be a decent number 3-4 SP. Sigh…damn the Redsox…they have been signing every injured player off the market, lol.

Indians signed him. Personally I think he’s done, but wouldn’t that be great if he managed to pull it together again and come up big for the Tribe in the postseason against… yep, you guessed it… $$ Sabathia and the NYYankees.

Um I was kidding about Estes & Rusch
but not Sheets. The Cubs dumped Marquis to save money so they are hardly going to get a 3-4 starter for what they have to spend.

Sheets would be a decent option...
If only he wasn’t injury prone…but then again if he’s willing to accept a one yr deal then I am sure Hendry would sign him in a heartbeat. However, I have a feeling that Sheets is looking to be signed around 2-3 years around 10-12 million a yr.
I’m surprised no team has taken a banner on Sheets, but I have a feeling that either the Braves or the Mets (depending on the Lowe sweepstakes) will sign him.

Yeah, but I consider him a mediocre SP at best
He was one of the most overrated SP before the yanks signed him. One damn good yr and the Yanks broke the bank on him. Honestly, either Smoltz/Penny would have been decent options for the Cubs. (Yes, i know Smoltz is comin off an injury, but he’s hardly known to be an injury prone SP).

The Cubs already have 4 decent-good starters. Wolf might work well as a 5th/innings eater-type guy. He’s lefty and allows us to isert Marshall wherever he’s needed.

Has had at least 32 starts and 191 innings pitched for seven straight years, never been on the DL (to my knowledge).

They are no better…..maybe not as good as Marquis. Why not just keep Marquis if that were the case? Not buying into Randy Wolf either………..again………………similar in $$ and production to JM. I think Hendry will go hard after Peavy once ownership is decided…………if that fails…………Marshall or Gaudin.

No more Heilman talk
Anyone who brings up Heilman has apparently never seen him pitch on the Mets. If that guy didn’t pitch in relief for NY they would have made the post season the last 2 years.

The Cubs won’t spend much there or they could have just kept Marquis. I suspect if the Cubs sign/trade for a #5 you are looking at a Wolf, Heilman, Redding (Mets nabbed him though) type. I could just as easily be Gaudin or Marshall.

A name that's been mentioned
Garrett Olson. Yes, his MLB numbers look awful, but he’s young. He’s got a Rich Hill-type repetoire, touching low 90’s on the fastball at times, big curve, and a decent change. In the minors, he was very good against lefties (stats are at minorleaguesplits). Why do I bring that up? Well, you deal for Olson and you could try him as a starter, or you could use him in the pen, with Sean Marshall as the starter instead.
If we can’t hit a top name, like a Peavy, why not? Olson is cheap, fits the lefty criteria, also offers the potential to move Marshall fully into the rotation if they wanted. Look, as much as I’d like for Pie to somehow surprise and come through … he just won’t have the opportunities next year and it might be time to move on now and get something. Now, indications were the Orioles wanted Cedeno along with Pie before they pondered it. I’d be willing to do that (neither guy really has a role with us, and getting a young cost-controlled arm with some upside is worth it, IMO) but of course you hope to bargain that down (or to get a prospect tagged on). To be honest, I still don’t know why Baltimore would even consider dealing Olson considering their rotation issues right now. Maybe that was just another red herring in the offseason. That said, certainly I’d try to investigate if it was legit and we couldn’t hit a top arm because well, I’m not too enthused about any of the other FA arms out there, outside of Lowe (and I’m assuming he’s too costly in this scenario).

in this case, though
I honestly don’t understand why they would have interest in dealing Olson for Pie and Cedeno. That said, the rumors on that deal emanated from Baltimore as well, and it suggested that Baltimore was intrigued. After all, trading a couple relatively useless pieces for us (Pie and Cedeno, although Cedeno probably has a bit more value to us) wouldn’t be the biggest deal, and for a solid young arm, and the rumors/speculation from Baltimore suggested that was enough. Part of me thinks Hendry wouldn’t do something like that, that he would only make the move IF it was to get Peavy (that is, to swap those guys for Olson.

For example, I think Freddy Garcia might have to accept that kind of deal. One or two guys like that might be another low-risk way to find a part-time 5th starter.

word has been that he has a cleam bill of health and teams would be foolish not to take him on as a fifth starter. In fact, the Cubs could do this as well if they saw fit to offer a 1 year deal. No Peavy of course.

We just traded Marquis for scrap metal,
DeRosa for three dudes I’ve never heard of, and let Wood go. We made these moves because we needed the money to get GameBoard. I really don’t see how we would have any more free monies to sign any starter than is either gonna be better than Marquis or Marshall. Sans a new owner wrapping a few million under our Christmas tree, this ain’t gonna happen.

I said this when we traded Marquis
that people were going to miss him. There is something to be said for people that take the ball every fifth day no matter what and give you league average innings. Now that we dont ahve that we ahve a problem, and it looks a litle more magnified when we are already only talking about Harden making 25 starts. My choice would be to get Peavy and empty the cabinet. That protects us against so many different scenarios (Demps regresses to the norm, Harden blows out his arm in ST, Z is an up and down again guy) but i am not sure we will finish the deal. That being said my number two choice would be Andy because he will probably sign on a one year deal (No way Wolf does). I want no part of Garland, his stuf is atrocious. But if he could be had at one year i would be ok. No for Freddy Garcia, No for Braden Looper.
the person who intrigues me the most is Chad Gaudin. He started what 31 games for Oakland in 2007 with a solid ERA for the AL.. I think he might be ok… Also that Pedro character
So my list in order…
1. Peavy 2. Pettite 3. Marshall 4. Gaudin 5. Pedro 6. Garland

Garland
is going to be the best option. he already missed out on more money by not accepting arbitration. and with sheets most likely going to end up with the rangers, lowe talking with the mets and the braves, garland’s options are running thin. i could see him maybe signing a 1 yr deal for 6-8 mil, and testing the market again next season. either way, i think hes a solid option for this upcoming year and would fit nicely on the cubs roster.

I would love Jon Garland, but...
Garland takes the ball every 5th day and pitches deep into ballgames. He can get lit up from time to time and probably can’t be counted upon for more than a 4.25 ERA at best, but I would love to have him.
Trouble is Garland will probably get nice money for three years. I doubt seriously Jim Hendry would stick his neck out that far on Garland, especially when he doubtful has the dollars to do so.
I see where the White Sox are on the verge of signing Freddy Garcia to a minor league deal. That’s a good thing for them. I wish we were taking another dip in the Wade Miller type waters. Sometimes it can work. Makes sense when we don’t have a lot of extra coin lying around.

i don’t see any market for garland at all. at least not one thats going to give him 3 years. the reason i say he goes for the 1 yr deal, is heading into next season, theres no sabathia, lowe, burnett. garland comes to chicago and puts together a decent year, he ups his value for next yr when the pitching market isnt flooded with big name guys. im sticking with the 6-8 mil a year scenario. maybe he for 2 years even.

Might as well just toss Chad Gaudin out there. Yes, Garland is better, but he isn’t the lefty we need, and he’s an end of the rotation starter that depends on his defense. Add in that extra money, and we might as well pocket it and give it to Gaudin if we don’t find a lefty.

Last year
he pitched in the minors for the cardinals, but hasn’t pitched in the bigs since 2006. I would be very surprised if he made the Blue Jays starting rotation. I do think he could be used as a long man though, if he doesn’t crack the rotation. Waiting to see what form he is in in ST would be a safe move, but I don’t see how trading one or two recently acquired minor league pitchers would be a bad move. Low cost, low risk.
