Cubs vs. Pirates from 1991. 4/21/1991.

This is the game where the Cubs were up 7-2 going into the bottom of the 8th, and the Pirates tied it eventually. The Cubs then scored 5 in the top of the 11th. You can guess what happened next.

I'm not sure I want to see this one again.

But if I do, I think I’ll turn it off after the top of the 11th.

Man this is an awesome channel

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Isn’t that the game when Dawson hit two clutch homers, only to have the Cubs pen blow it?

Yes.

The thing that struck me most about this game....

… is how Zimmer kept stubbornly sticking with Assenmacher even after he clearly had run out of gas. In modern baseball no lefthander would have been left in to pitch to three righthanded hitters in a row in the 8th inning.

And why they didn’t walk Bonilla is beyond me.

Of course, when Dave Smith eventually came in, he wasn’t much better. No disrespect to the recently deceased, but Smith was pretty bad after his signing as a free-agent.

Wait, THEY LOST?!

Oh man…I watched parts of this game last night. I saw the first few innings then tuned back in to see the ninth, tenth and eleventh – including Doug Dascenzo’s clutch bases loaded single and the Hawk’s awesome oppo-field granny. Then I turned it off to go to bed, assuming the Cubs had it in the bag. I figured MLB Network was airing the game as a precursor to Dawson possibly being elected into the Hall today. So…THEY LOST?!

Personal disclaimer: I was 21 years old in 1991 and “out of baseball” for the time being, so I’m largely unfamiliar with that lineup outside of Ryno, Grace and Dawson. The name’s of Jerome Walton, Doug Dascenzo and Luis Salazzar did ring a bell, however. I also recognized Eric Pappas’ last name – he’s Milt’s son, I presume? On the Pirates side, Barry Bonds looked like a completely different person and, for a split second, I was sure their second baseman was a young Neifi Perez.

Idea for Al: The next time MLB Network airs an old Cubs game like this, maybe write a game recap the next day as if the game had actually happened. Just a notion that occurred to me last name.

Erik Pappas is not related to Milt...

… although he is from the Chicago area (Mt. Carmel).

That was one of only four games he started in his brief (seven-game) Cub career. The Cubs didn’t have many catching options that year. IIRC Joe Girardi was hurt, Damon Berryhill wasn’t hitting and Rick Wilkins was still in Triple-A.

I could do a recap, but maybe a better idea would be to open a game thread so people can discuss the game while it’s on TV as if it’s happening live.

Well I'll be damned.

I convinced myself last night that Pappas just had to be Milt’s son. Interesting. And, yeah, maybe next time I’ll propose a game thread. Or maybe I could do some research and write a faux recap myself as a Fanpost. If you’re REALLY struggling with writer’s block some day, however, feel free to use my idea. You could really show off your knowledge of Cubs history.

It's a good idea.

I just might, especially if they ever do a home game that I know I was there.
