Cubs near signing Takahashi?

From MLBTR...

Patrick Newman of NPB tracker is relaying a report from Japanese-based Sports Hochi that states the Cubs are close to inking a one-year deal with left-handed pitcher Ken Takahashi.

Newman calls it "very early speculation," but it's definitely a situation worth eying.  Sports Hochi believes that Takahashi would be used mostly in middle relief by the Cubs and could be in line for some spot starts.  According to the report, the Cubs are looking for support for Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome.  Others have drummed up a similar idea in the past.

While I dont think the Cubs NEED another bullpen arm, its good to see that Hendry is out looking to give Cotts some competition. It also suggests that Fukudome's decline could have been (according to the Cubs) partially mental...

we need

a dominant bullpen arm.

Dear Santa:: All I want for X-mas this year is an official 2009 Jake Peavy Cubs Jersey. Oh and a Beimel one too. I've been a real good guy for the most part!!!

Disagree.

Marmol, Guzman (if healthy), Shark (if in the pen) and Vizcaino are hard throwers. If you mean dominant as in ‘doesnt give up any base runners, hits, or walks’ then I’d agree, we need more, but who doesnt. I think that the Cubs have a solid pen going into spring training and this signing would promote competition between some of the fringe arms.

One thing you learned as a Cubs fan: when you bought you ticket, you could bank on seeing the bottom of the ninth.

what I mean to say

was dominant lefty arm. too many ifs in the bullpen for my liking. if the new closer does well, if guzman can stay healthy, if shark isnt a starter, if gregg doesnt pitch like joe borowski, if vizcaino dont serve pitches up on a tee…..our bullpen gives me a bad feeling as of right now.

Don't Expect Shark To Be In The 'Pen...

… in fact, expect him to be in AAA to start the season…

My 2008 Christmas wish list includes this jersey. In Hendry We Trust!

A lefty for the pen?

Sounds like a risk worth taking. The Cubs need to open the left-handed reliever job up in Spring Training, and letting Takahashi and Cotts battle it out (Marshall will have a spot somewhere I’m sure) sounds good to me.

If signing a Japanese player helps Fukudome, that’d be a bonus, too.

Agreed

This could be a sign that theyre at least entertaining the idea of letting Marshall start…..dont know a thing about this guy, but if he can be a LOOGY, then great

Stats/info on Takahashi...

…can be found here.

He’ll be 40 years old for most of ‘09, and in ’08 had a Michael Wuertz-like WHIP of 1.435 – and that’s in the Japanese leagues, mind you. I understand the need to give Kosuke a little company, but this guy doesn’t seem like the answer to me. No thanks.

Yikes

I assume this will be another Takatsu like signing

If we can as good of a year out of this guy

as the Sox did from Shingo, I’d be happy to have him.

Shouldn't be too expensive

But then again, we’ve (arguably) over paid for Bradley and Miles

by Waveland Ave on Jan 11, 2009 11:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Overpaid for Bradley and Miles???

What are you basing it on? Certainly not their 2008 values (or in Bradley’s case, any value he’s put up in the last 5 years, save for his 2005 season with the Dodgers).

Does this mean Marshall...

…becomes the fifth starter and Cotts and Takahashi are the lefties in the ‘pen? If this is the case, then there’d be no trade or free-agent signing to add to the rotation, right?

I like Marshall as a swing guy and hope the Cubs go after someone else to round out the rotation, but I’m (thankfully) not Jim Hendry.

I Don't Think We Can Read Into It...

… perhaps this is a minor league signing with an invite to Spring Training?

What is more intriguing to me is if this does happen now, he will likely occupy a 40-man roster spot, right? There are no spots left, so this may force Hendry’s hand via DFA… or force his hand for a trade — a trade that I have been anxiously anticipating.

I thought we needed

another lefty anyway. At least to compete with Cotts in Spring Training. And if he makes the team I can’t imagine it being anything but good for Fukudome.

Well the article in the mlbtr link

says there is no mention of this in the japanese media at all….i agree with the NPB post though, give Otsuka a try, hes a proven MLB reliever

The official site has some info

It says that the Cubs have considered hiring a Japanese hitting coach to help Fukudome. Interesting.

The unexamined blog is not worth reading.

by neonverse1 on Jan 11, 2009 11:37 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

that's probably a better option

you don’t have to give up a roster spot for him, plus the guy could actually help his hitting out

Is this more a move

to get a decent lefty for the bullpen, or is this just a move to give Fukudome a friend?

The idea

of getting another Japanese player to complement ‘Dome is intriguing, but during the season the cameras showed him talking to Lee and Soriano (I think mostly Lee). Don’t they both speak some Japanese? A forty year old pitcher changing leagues doesn’t exactly get the smiley face. All kidding aside, what about Tuffy Rhoades as his personal hitting coach?

I remember seeing Tuffy

language

I dont know how much those two would remember, Soriano played there when he was a teenager, right? and Lee was an Army brat? So I doubt they have any level of fluency

Fact is, there are several, viable Japanese relievers we could sign, but this seems a bit odd. We couldve taken a flyer on Saito, and Otsuka is still available or Koji Mitsui.

I think it could work, a newly imported Japanese reliever would be completely uknown to the rest of the league, so that would work to our advantage for the first year

Seems rather pointless.

I should also point out that, as noted, the original article says “very early speculation”, which to me doesn’t translate as “close”, in Japanese or any other language.

Cubs don't have a real LOOGY

If Marshall is slated to compete for a rotation spot than who other than Cotts. Personally I would like $2.5M spent on a proven Guardado but if this 40 year old has something that facing one or two lefties who cannot adjust in the few AB’s well that is another.

Heck he might be a chef as well and able to prepare Fukudome’s meals as well.

I think it would be best to avoid this guy

Hiring a friend for a player is one thing if that player were Zambrano or Aramis. We don’t need to waste a roster spot on a below-average pitcher just to make the left-handed half of a platoon happy.

Let the Blaine Gabbert era begin.

It may be just a spring-training friend...

… sort of like Shingo Takatsu was last year.

Almost 40

and I don’t like the K/9 inning ratio. Don’t bring him in to be someone’s friend, but bring him in if they think he can help the club. If he’s just a “spring training friend” fine.

Anyone know how the Japanese K/9 innings stat translates to MLB level competition?

Information.

I have heard that there is absolutely no truth to this rumor… so maybe we should move on.

The Report Says...

… that they are not close. That can change instantaneously.

Either way, I highly doubt Hendry wants to DFA anyone, which he would have to do if he signed another FA.

IMO, a trade is next…

we need another lefty in the pen

people keep calling for more righties or are saying “we are set”.nDoes anybody not see this… you need more than just Cotts….i feel like i am taking crazy pills , if its not Takahashi…it will be somebody else

by Maefster88 on Jan 12, 2009 9:24 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, this is debatable.

Somebody check me on this, but it doesn’t seem to me like Lou is a big LOOGY user to begin with. (Where art thou, Scott Eyre?) So getting another lefty besides Cotts may not be a huge priority.

Pitching staff is complete in my view

I doubt strongly that Hendry will make any more moves that impact the competition for pitching jobs. I think he is content to go to camp with what the Cubs have. Can’t say that I blame him given that he very doubtful has any more money to spend. Plus the rest of the NL Central is stuck in place or going backwards.

I think the 5th spot in the rotation comes down to Sean Marshall or Chad Gaudin.

Bullpen? Assuming of course that injuries don’t bite… Marmol, Gregg, Gaudin (nod to Marshall for the rotation), Vizcaino, Cotts….with Hart, Guzman, Stevens, Ascanio, Wells battling it out for two final spots.

I say Jeff Spellcheck starts the year at Triple A pitching out of their rotation.

Why don't the Cubs just sign Jackie Chan? The quotes would

be better and they would get a lot more publicity. This sound like a bunch of nothing. Next.
