Padres re-sign Mark Prior
here's the link. Prior, once the golden child and the hope of our franchise's future, has not pitched in the bigs since 2006 with the Cubs. Prior will earn a modest $1M if he pitches in the majors this year.
I really did like Mark Prior a lot, but for once I am happy that this yearly charade of "will he pitch?" doesn't affect our team. That being said, how many of you would have taken the relatively small financial risk and signed him?
Also, I know somebody will think this has some foreshadowing of the Padres being more likely to move Mr. Peavy, but let me be the first to say that these two are not even close to being related.

nah, just joking
I remember seeing him pitch in 2006 against the Nationals at RFK and he was putrid. I was thinking, man he is not doing well. I’m glad I saw him pitch though. I’ve seen the three nasty boys of 03: Wood, Prior, and Zambrano

Absolutely not
I don’t think any of us will ever know exactly what happened with Prior-did he/does he have legitimate injuries or is he just not mentally tough enough to pitch through aches and pains (or a little of both)?
But I don’t know anyone who didn’t get thoroughly sick of the sideshow over the years. There’s no reason to revisit that no matter how (relatively) low the financial risk.
That being said, I wish him the best for this latest comeback attempt. The odds aren’t with him but it would certainly be a great story if he somehow found all or part of the magic again, even if he does it wearing a Padres uniform.

saw him pitch in peoria
on a rehab assignment with the chiefs a few years back. got lit up for 3 innings, but was a fun day trip for a bunch of guys from champaign. we also won the 50/50, to make it a profitable day!

I got the fork out last season
I didn’t want the Cubs to resign him last season while many people here were talking about how he could lead the Cubs to the World Series. No sense to resign him this year either.

Quote from the article.
Padres general manager Kevin Towers said Prior threw off a mound on Friday for the first time since surgery, and the report from team trainer Todd Hutcheson was good.
“The last surgery benefited him a great deal,” Towers said. “It looks like his mechanics are back in line again and he has good carries on his throws when he’s doing long tosses.”
How many times have we heard this same old story? Towel drills are next.

Other terms that give me the chills;
“long toss”
“mechanics”
AAAhhhhhh……these are words and phrases I hope stay in places like San Diego, all things considered, lets count our blessings!

I realize you're exercising your fair right to hyperbole here...
…but it’s hardly accurate to say Prior was “worthless then” if the “then” in question is 2003 (ERA+ 178.) He gave us one great year and then tormented us for the following three. He’ll likely forever remain a curiousity to many Cubs fans. I see no point in wasting energy hating him.

Prior in 2004 and 2005
Prior had a good second half in 2004 (and got no run support) and pitched well for most of 2005 (won 11 games). I often wonder what would have happened had Brad Hawpe not broken his arm that year.
Anyway, I don’t think he really “tormented” us until after the broken arm.

Well, I was speaking broadly. But those are good points.
The comebacker by Hawpe really did seem to be the dealbreaker (no pun intended).

sure -- and I wasn't trying to be argumentative
The really frustrating thing about Prior was that he was hurt so often AS WAS Wood. If the rest of the rotation had been healthy in 2004-06, Prior’s absences wouldn’t have been as keenly felt. I won’t even get into Prior’s prickly attitude …
I know you’re not making this point, daver, but Prior’s story is occasionally glossed over by people saying he was never the same pitcher (health-wise and performance-wise) after Bartman. That’s just flat wrong, but it’s a point that occasionally pops up in national media stories or out of the mouths of uninformed fans (though not on BCB).
His last two starts in 2004 were brilliant (against the Mets before Victor Diaz and a 16-K game against the Reds). When he came back in 2005, he pitched well, including a great game against the White Sox.
But after Brad Hawpe … well, we know the rest. But I actually saw him pitch well in Shea in one of his last starts as a Cub (in July 2006, I think).
I can’t imagine what it’s like to be Mark Prior these days. And if he wasn’t already a millionaire, I wouldn’t want to try.

He lost it
during that playoff game and it was only temporary, while the manager was mashing his toothpick.
I saw some of those games, post 03 NLCS, pre-Hawpe and he was good.
I believe several things got to him. 2003’s collision with Giles, his huge pitch count for all 2003 (he and Woody lead the majors) and finally the Hawpe liner.
I’d root for him if he were not such an arrogant ass.

perfect summary
He is and was an arrogant (guy), and in 2003, he had every right to be. If he’d been a little more Glendon Rusch and a little less Roger Clemens in the following years, he probably woudn’t be disliked by so many.
But calling himself “an employee” in spring training 2007? Please. And I can’t even remember the details of the card-signing incident, but, if memory serves, it wasn’t pretty.
My college roommate went to high school with Prior and they were passing friends. Roomie always spoke well of Prior, and hoped he’d some day become a Padre.
Funny how things work out.

I was in a rehab clinic in San Diego
and ran into Mark Prior. This must have been around the early winter of 05. We talked about 5 minutes and he was very low key and pleasant. I thought he was just working out, because in addition to being affiliated with a hospital, it was also a high end fitness facility. It was only later that I finally suspected he was having rehab for arm problems.

How times a changed
First pick in Jun, 01. Coming up in May, 02 vs the Pirates at Wrigley, Having that great 2003 season (except I still believe the Giles collision here against the Braves played a huge role in his issues), then ST 2004 the wheel began to fall off. How high was Cubdom on him and Woody and to have fallen this far.
I just wish he and his father weren’t such arrogant pricks, I’d actually be rooting for him.
I’d say the Pads are either going to hedge their bet on that $40M payroll limit or they think both Prior and Burke won’t make the squad somehow. If they do, it’s a $1.65M payroll hit on top of the $31.2M they have already committed, including Peavy.

He didn’t pitch at all in 2007 or 2008 after minimal pitching in 2006. Carpenter never missed that much time. I bet the number of pitchers that have come back successfully from missing 2+ years is very rare.

Without checking...
… I think you’re right.
A good comp is Curt Simmons, who was a power pitcher in the 50s with the Phillies. The K totals are lower, but they were for everyone in that era. Simmons finished in the top 6 in the NL in K’s four out of five years in the 50’s, then not again.
Anyway, he got hurt and had to reinvent himself as a finesse pitcher, and had success for the Cardinals in the 60’s, winning 18 games for their pennant winning team in 1964. (He even pitched briefly for the Cubs at the end of his career.)
But look at Simmons’ career — he never sat out for 2 1/2 seasons, he pitched at least briefly every year.
Mark Prior is Steve Busby. I think The Former Employee is done.

You can say unfulfilled promise, but it was there. He did have some excellent games for the Cubs. I don’t understand all the transference of anger. Did he kill your dog, Worf? I was there for his last game as a Cub and from the first pitch it was clear he had something seriously wrong with his arm. I agree with Al, besides the collision with Giles, I think the shot to his elbow ruined him. I wish him well, I hope he makes it back. Do I want him on the Cubs? No. Am I glad the annual will he or won’t he pitch saga is over? Yes. But, I wish him well.

There have been RUMORS of that.
I emphasize “rumors” because he was not mentioned in the Mitchell Report nor has there been any definitive evidence.

Man, that is a tough one.
OK, I’m going to say Mark Prior. His reputation as an ace-in-the-making was far greater than Hill’s and his problems have always appeared more physical than mental. I’m not saying Prior will ever amount to anything, but I could see him getting a callup as a pen arm or even being given a start or two late in the season – especially if the Padres are as awful as they were last season. There, I said it.

I say he evolves into a very, very poor man's Rich Harden...
where the Padres (or another team) just hope to get him 18-24 starts and 7-10 wins. I think he’ll eventually recover slightly to show some flashes of his old form, only to be crippled by another injury or inconsistent play. I could also see an attempt at a relief role and possible closer.

I'd agree with everything you said and cast my vote for Prior...
…except for one tiny little factor – Hill is left-handed. Something about being left-handed causes all sorts of illogical baseball decisions at times. In all seriousness, this is one choice I would NOT want to have to put money on.
In the end, I gotta go with Prior too, as long as Hill stays with the Cubs. If Hill gets traded, then I’d have to switch my vote, thinking his new team would feel like they have to see what they got.

Love the Rosenbloom-ism.
His best ever was back in late summer of 2007 (gotta take the in-the-now perspective of Chicago sports at that time):
…and remember death is not an option, running on Alfonzo Soriano or kicking to Devon Hester?

Relief pitcher...maybe
Hey guys…I’m an avid reader but not an avid poster.
With the recent advancements in Sports Medicine. I do think Prior, considering he is only 28, could eventually one day be in the bigs. I think he would be smart to try his hand in the bullpen to keep the innings down.

I loved watching him pitch though
I will always remember his follow through that just seemed so perfect as you watched it. I’m glad I got to see him pitch, but he was downright awful in the game I saw him against the Nats. I hope he returns, but I highly doubt it..
Erm, well if we are going to call Milton Bradley nicknames, mine is Fischer Price: yes, you heard it here first..

I bet there's a 1 in 50 chance ...
that Prior pitches in the bigs again.
