Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I have nothing against Eckstein, but wouldn't Ronny "Boom Boom" Cedeno be more interesting to the Padres.

Everyone knows exacty what Eckstein brings, but is no long term solution. Ronny has some potential upside and could become something given the chance to play, elsewhere.

Cedeno has no real spot with the Cubs, why can't Hendry at least get something for the Pads for him?

Sheds further cold water on Jake Peavy trade rumors

If the Padres were to be talking deal with the Cubs than surely Ronny Cedeno would be a throw-in. Hence a team that is already in line to lose 100 games would not go out and sign the ancient Omar Vizquel to play shortstop.

Pads Are Looking...

… to not spend more than $1M, and they may want Eckstein to play 2B.

My 2008 Christmas wish list includes this jersey. In Hendry We Trust! Current 2009 payroll.

Don't they want to try Matt Antonelli at 2B?

Antonelli?

OHHH Matt Antonelli. The guy who posted this line: .193/.292/.281 in his first 21 games as a Major Leaguer? Also this line in AAA ball: .215/.335/.322.

by Boom Town on Jan 15, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Well, Antonelli did look overmatched last year.

But he did have a big year in 2007 and is still only 24. If I’m the Padres and want to cut payroll, why wouldn’t I give the 2B job to a minimum-wage guy like Antonelli, considering they’re going to lose 100 games with him or with Eckstein?

because

you might not want to rush the guy. give him half a season in AAA and see how things go.

by toonsterwu on Jan 16, 2009 12:21 PM CST up reply actions

That's something a contender would do...

… the Padres have the luxury of being able to put a AAA team on a major league field. Why not do it?

by Al Yellon on Jan 16, 2009 1:53 PM CST up reply actions

Well, a case can be argued

that, if they still believe in Antonelli (no indication that they don’t), that they might want him to get more consistent with his habits (there was a report of some minor bad habits, I think).

Either way, I’m viewing it in a completely different prism than you. I’m looking at it as – it’s a rebuilding year, we have 2nd base options, so why start the clock when you don’t have to?

by toonsterwu on Jan 16, 2009 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

"Rebuilding"...

… implies using some of your minor league talent, right?

They want him for second and the Dads are not competing this year. This has next to nothing to do with the Cubs or Ronnie Cedeno.

Me no likee

The last time a washed-up Cardinal went to San Diego, he ended up here. Now, Edmonds worked out OK, but I’m afraid Eckstein will be a Cub by June.

The worst beer I had was pretty good.

Nothing is tripping my trigger...

I need to come up with a good OT post to get the juices flowing.

We don't need Eckstein

as we have no shortage of “Scrappiness” around here (see Theriot, Fontenot)

by ChicagoRobb on Jan 15, 2009 4:27 PM CST reply actions

Not all cajuns are the same

Theriot is the near epitome of scrappiness.

Fontenot? Apart from being a couple of short cajuns, and having names ending in “ot” but pronounced “o” there games are nothing alike.

Questionable

I find it hard to believe that this discourages any Peavy trade talks whatsoever. Eckstein could easily be headed to 2b which leaves the Pads still looking for a SS. Now it doesn’t have to be Ronny Cedeno (or Theriot!) but it doesn’t slam the door on anything either. We are obviously waiting on new owner approval for any new deals and the Pads have to cut payroll (so they’ve said) so a one-year signing of a mif doesn’t shine alot of light on anything.

Padres

I think the idea that they would have Ronny Cedeno as a target was always a bit overrated. Cedeno (and Pie for that matter) aren’t ideal offensive fits for what the Padres front office desires. Doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have taken them as throw ins. Keep in mind, though, that they already took Everth Cabrera in the Rule 5 draft, and most indications are he’ll make the roster.

I imagine they added Eckstein to play 2nd and dabble short if need be. They are also talking Omar Vizquel. The idea may be to buy some time, with Everth as a swing option. They do have fairly decent 2nd base depth – Matt Antonelli isn’t as good as he seemed 2 years ago, but most people expect a bounce back year in 09, Travis Denker was always overhyped by some Giants fans but is a decent 2nd base talent, and Eric Sogard is someone I am a fan of.

Short of it is, I wouldn’t read too much into the Eckstein signing having any implications on a Peavy deal. Not saying a Peavy deal will or won’t happen (I think that comes down solely on new ownership’s call), but the Peavy deal was always geared towards adding pitching for the Padres. They have fairly solid positional depth in the minors, but are lacking in arms. I imagine that a Peavy trade could be done even if we didn’t have Pie and Cedeno (and Bruce noted in his thread that this is true for Pie). The reason the Padres were pursuing a Gorkys Hernandez and Yunel Escobar from Atlanta is because Gorkys potential and Yunel being a good regular. Whether or not it is fair, Pie’s star has dimmed enough that he probably isn’t viewed on the same plane as Gorkys, and Cedeno isn’t viewed as anywhere close to Yunel.

One wish

And that is for Jim Hendry to put an end to this ridiculousness and just come out and say that the Cubs have no interest in acquiring Jake Peavy. I am 100% convinced that Hendry has no more money to spend other a couple million of spare change for a backup catcher and Rich Aurilla, So Taguchi, other ancient crap.

Regarding Ronny Cedeno, let’s face it. He’s not that good at anything. Nearly every team in baseball has a reasonable facsimile of Cedeno lying around their Triple A roster or showing up to spring training camp. NOBODY is going to give the Cubs much of anything for Cedeno.

by BLou on Jan 16, 2009 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

I think Hendry

has basically intimated what you want him to say. I mean, he’s basically indicated that as of right now, he can’t spend anymore and that he’d wait and see if new ownership would bump things up, or something along those lines.

by toonsterwu on Jan 16, 2009 1:40 AM CST up reply actions

was checking mlbtr

and there was a blurb indicating that shortstop would be handled internally, with Chris Burke or Luis Rodriguez (surprising that Everth Cabrera wasn’t mentioned). It came from Jenny Cavnar.

They also have a mock lineup, which is basically what I expected, but I thought I’d post it anyways:

1. Gerut
2. Eckstein
3. Giles
4. Gonzalez
5. Kouzmanoff
6. Headley
7. Rodriguez
8. Hundley

I know everyone’s penciling them in for the worst team in the bigs next year, but that’s not a bad lineup. Not good, but not bad. Particularly if Headley steps foward. Not saying they’ll be a playoff team (they won’t), but their record may not be as bad as people suggest. Come midseason, assets like Cedric Hunter, Kellen Kulbacki could be helping that lineup out.

They sound

like they need a ONEDEC!

If ONEDEC would stick around, we wouldn't need to trade him.

a smart gm would never come out and say they have no interest in guy like peavy.let,s not spend all season salivating over peavy.
