Hendry/Piniella Convention Questions
Use this post to leave questions you'd like me (or other BCB members who are going to the conventions) to ask Lou or Jim at Saturday morning's session.
Keep in mind that each of us probably only has time to ask ONE question, with maybe time for a brief follow-up.
I'll pick out what I think are the best questions and see if I can narrow it down by the time I get to the front of the question line.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Here's mine.
Just as we skipped over a few of Rich Harden’s starts late last year to keep him fresh and rested, I assume we will try to do the same with Milton Bradley. Last year we had a few away night games/1 pm home day game setups, for instance, that may prove worthwhile to give MB rest. How would a defensive lineup or late-inning substitution for GameBoard look at this moment? Thanks.

FWIW...
… I believe there will be only one such schedule occurrence this year.
That will happen if the Cubs/Brewers game on 4/12 is the ESPN Sunday night game, as rumored, followed by Opening Day at home the next day. (Fortunately, home is only a bus ride away.)

That's a good one.
Because if Hill could suddenly recover his 2007 form, we’d have a damn good fifth starter.

Good question
Hill is a genuine mystery, and it’s not a question you can wiggle around with coach speak very easily
What do you want them to say???
There don’t seem to be any simple answer. Hendry and Piniella can be as diplomatic as they want on the subject of Rich Hill, but by all indications his career is done.
What do I WANT them to say?
“In recent days, Dr. Sam Beckett has leaped into Rich Hill’s body. Aided by Al, a hologram from his own time, Dr. Beckett has saved Hill’s career, and we believe Hill could win 15 games this year.”
What I want to find out is something else. Do Lou and Hendry think Hill has any shot of recovering? I agree, BLou, that Hill’s career probably is on life support. But I’d like to hear what Lou and Hendry have to say — both about the past and the future for Mr. Hill.
I understand
It’s just that I doubt they have a solid grasp on answer. Neither does Rich Hill.

That would be better than nothing.
However Rich Hill swings the bat like less than a girl. I say that becasue I am a girl and I have a better stance than he does, lol. Here’s to hoping he can get his head on straight and be valuable to the Cubs again.

I hear Derrek Lee is batting third again this year.
Why, Lou, why?
My real question, however, is this: why should I put my faith in this team after this past year’s letdown? That’s a question, however, that Lou and Hendry cannot answer.
As you can see, I still haven’t cooled off from last fall.
Lou Piniella didn't pitch, hit, catch or throw during the Dodger series
and I think that would be his direct pull-no-punches answer to your question. It was a failure of a 25 man roster much, much, much more than it was a failure of the button pusher in the dugout.
Lou has to take some, if not most, of the blame for Game 1
The entire bullpen was rested, I don’t believe Marmol or Wood had pitched for 5 days, Lilly wasn’t needed for at least 4 more days, Dempster was walking everyone in sight, obviously had no control and Lou not only left him out there too long but didn’t even have anyone warming up until it was too late. He managed Game 1 like a regular season game, not like a playoff game. I don’t care if Demp was our best pitcher all year long, he wasn’t that night and Lou should have recognized it even quicker than the 40,000 plus in attendance did. If the Cubs got out of that 5th inning, maybe they take Game 1 and momentum is on our side.
by Southside Steve on Jan 16, 2009 11:06 AM CST up reply actions
Exactly.
Why Lilly wasn’t warming up, and maybe in the game pitching to Ethier, is beyond me.

Look, I don't know why you guys
think you know more than Lou Piniella with his 40 + years of experience in the game and his Aquafina endorsement contract, but if you want to blame this genius who has single-handedly led the Cubs to two post-season berths….
(just saving everyone some time)

Even geniuses make mistakes...
and Lou did in Game 1. I love Lou and what he brings to our team but pure and simple, he screwed up in Game 1. I didn’t say run him out of town or burn him in effigy, just that he has to take some of the blame.

Me too!
Two years in a row critical decision were made in a Playoff game that turned out to bite the team in the ass: 1. leaving Demp in two batters too long 2. “Saving” Big Z in AZ for his next start that never happened.
Isn't that why you ask the question?
I would like to know the reasoning behind the moves Lou made in the series. Lou has a great deal of experience and I find it interesting to hear his perspective.

What I'd want to ask
If I could be there, I would ask something along these lines:
This is obviously a very good Cubs team we are watching right now. How much longer do you think the championship window is open for this team? 2 more years? Longer? Shorter?
And if I could, I’d ask a follow up question (although it might be better if I could somehow combine the questions):
Given the difficult sweeps the Cubs have suffered the past two years, is it better to make moves to widen that championship window or to make moves which might close that window down the road, but focus on increasing the team’s odds to win this year?

I'd be asking about Fukudome
What reasons would you give for Fukudome’s struggles in the 2nd half of last season, and what steps are being taken to help him hit for the whole of ’09 like he did the first half of ’08?
Or something like that. I’m genuinely curious to hear what Lou thinks went wrong with him in the 2nd half.
Simple
Major league pitchers identified way to attack Kosuke’s “run up in the batter box and slap at the ball” style of hitting. The troubling issue is that it is that precise hitting style that defines Kosuke and made him into a star in Japan, but is unlikely to be a style that can work in the majors.
ichiro?
isn’t this the same style as ichiro? how is he still successful with it and ML pitchers aren’t able to pitch around that style when he’s at the plate.. maybe i’m wrong and their plate approaches are different or ichiro is just simply MUCH better than Dome…
by cubbiefanTN on Jan 16, 2009 10:01 AM CST up reply actions
Well...
Ichiro does have the same hitting approach. But just because two players share similarities in approach doesn’t mean you get same results. If that were the case then everybody in baseball would be the second coming of Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, etc.
Since you seem to know all the answers....

"Dad gum right this games gonna be played under protest. . . I guarantee this is gonna be one protest that's upheld." --Hawk Harrelson, 6/24/07
In fairness...
in this case, BLou is probably right. Kosuke seemed unable to adjust his approach at the plate, which is usually what separates Major League players from good minor leaguers for example. Where I gather BLou and I differ on this one is that I suspect Dome will eventually be able to figure it out.
As for your point about BLou commenting at all…while I tend to be annoyed by a lot of BLou’s posts, I’m not sure why he and the rest of us can’t discuss some of the questions people pose here. This is a discussion board, afterall…

“What could you have done differently last year to better prepare the team for the playoffs? With 8 walks by the pitching staff in the 1st game and 4 errors in the 2nd game, the team did not appear mentally ready. All the media scrutiny and fan pressure is only going to get worse, so what needs to change?”

I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
I have, literally, hundreds of questions
But I think this is the most relevant one:
“The business reasons of the DeRosa and Wood deals have become self-evident in the last few weeks. However, and keeping in mind that the Cubs are still in a ‘win-now’ mode, the sporting ramifications of those deals are still quite murky. Can you explain to us how the team will improve with the recent additions and subtractions from the roster, as the team has lost 34 saves, 21 HRs, 87 RBI and two proven leaders.”
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
Well..
You tee the question up very well. But the answer that rings true but they won’t dare say is that the Cubs are still the clear best team in the National League Central and the moves made are geared at producing better results come playoff time. Lets face it, the rest of the teams in this division have done essentially nothing or gone backwards this offseason with arguable exception of the up and coming Cincinnati Reds. Do I think the Cubs will win 97 games again? No. But I do feel strongly that we should win the NL Central unless we are overwhelmed by devastating run of injuries. Therefore, one thing matters. And that is winning October friggin baseball games !!!
+1
Of course! Winning in October and November is paramount. I just want to point out to those in power that the sporting side of the deals remains, in my opinion, unexplainable. And I would like to hear from them how they rationalize that Wood=Gregg and DeRosa=Miles.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
better do a little more math there
the numbers you list were lost in Wood and Derosa, but you didn’t add the contributions of Bradley, Gregg, and Aaron Miles. As for the proven leaders, they didn’t lead to well in the playoffs the last two years, so maybe the Cubs needed some more proven leadership, if you buy into that kinda thing.

Questions
Lou, there were an awful lot of base running mistakes throughout last year, will there be a bigger focus on this problem during spring training???
Jim Hendry, can we expect a big name lefty addition to the bullpen before the season begins??
I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!
WRIGLEY FEVER ????
I think alot of us would like to see the season start like right now ….After the quick ending to the 08 playoffs we all wonder why ?? Don’t expect and of the Cub’s mgt to stick their necks out on what went wrong . That just isn’t going to happen and unless a miracle happens the team has Dome for many years . Mesa can’t come quick enough for most of us . Lets hope for a successful 09…….
I didnt back read. but how about
Why did he decide to start Dome our two most important games of the eyar after he benched him the whole month.. If someone has already posted this santoswooden legs feel free to make fun of me with a nice picture or someone else scold me
"I played with one of the best pitchers in history, Greg Maddux," Zambrano said"
Maybe a hail mary at this point
But how about taking Lou to task about “Little Stevie Ire”?
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
