Cedeno avoids arb
I didn't see anyone else post this but Ronny Cedeno officially agreed to a one year deal with the Cubs for $822,000. While we've heard he's most likely going to be traded, he will be a cheap infielder for at least a couple more years.
Oddly enough Cubs.com referred to him as a "veteran reserve infielder". Since when did a 26 year old become a veteran?
Wuertz and Gregg have not had arbitration agreements yet.

Cedeno IS a veteran.
He has 900+ major league AB over four years.
Official press release on the signing
As per usual, the Cubs will probably settle with all their arb-eligible players before any hearing. The last hearing was Mark Grace, in 1993.

Interesting...
I guess I consider veterans of the game being more than 1 year older than me!
Age catches up with us quickly!

Wasn't Zambrano Close Last Year?
IIRC, they were heading to the courts for the hearing, and actually requested a 1-hour delay. They were able to come to an agreement in that hour…
Yes, but that was 2 years ago (2007).

Nope, it was before the 2007 season (Z's last arbitration year).
2008 was the first year of Z’s extension.

I don't think it makes any difference.
It’s more of a bookkeeping procedure.

I think they can stil trade him
or cut him, although I suppose if they DFA him, they have to pay him…

I believe the rule is...
… that if they cut him before a certain date in spring training, they only have to pay a small percentage of his salary.
That isn’t likely to happen. Most likely, he’ll be traded if he doesn’t make the 25-man roster.

My calculation is that the Cubs are at $127.69M right now, with minimums but not arb est
Gregg, Wuertz, in the arbitration processes, I have added Taguchi to the minor league contract status of $60,000, it does include $400K for Hoffpauir, $420K for Pie and $450K for Rich Hill, all whom either don’t have spots on the 25-man and without options or in Hoffpauir is presumed starting out in AAA.
It does not include a salary slot for back up (rumored by the Sun Times to possibly be Bako taking a pay cut to $500K.
Here is my google doc updated with new format and hard numbers going forward

As far as I understand the major league payroll
is only calculated with the players on the 40 man roster. I thought players on minor league contracts not on the 40 man roster do not count towards the MLB payroll. Is that correct?

I believe that is correct, at least not until they are actually placed on the 40-man.

Philosophy on dealing arb eligible players
better to have them signed so they can be delivered
Gregg is not on the block and Wuertz is excess unless he comes in and pushes out Samardz or Guzman which is a possibility.

ronny
no room now that miles is here. im sure he will be traded to somebody.
Keep in mind the minimum salary is now $400K.

That's the way baseball's salary structure works...
$800,000 is market value for a backup middle infielder. The fact that Theriot makes half as much is simply because Theriot isn’t arbitration eligible yet.

Players are paid based on service time more than the stats they put up.

cedeno
put him on waivers and nobody claims him, back to aaa. if anybody wants him bye.
He'll be claimed.
Why would you want to give him up for nothing? He has trade value.

Yeah, Cedeno's faults have been well-documented...
…but he’s a natural shortstop with a good arm who can occasionally hit the ball. He’d be claimed in a second.
