Marshall anointed the fifth starter?
According tot he Tribune and Lou Pinella it looks like Sean marhsall is going to be the fifth starter.
According to Lou, "Sean Marshall will join the rotation and also get about 25 starts, Piniella said, while Jeff Samardzija, Chad Gaudin and rookie Mitch Atkins will get opportunities to start this spring"

This seems like something new that hasnt been mentioned before. it was somewhat hinted at yesterday that Marshal will get a chance to compete but it looks like as of right now barring a trade we are going to give Sean the ball on the fifth day and let him go.
This leads to a couple of questions and comments that I have. I will start with the comments first.
1. I really like Marshall in the fifth sarters role. I thought he did admirably as a rookie in 06 and I think he did a good job i 07. I think he deserves a shot to succeed and I really think he can be a solid 3-5 starter in the National League.
2. I have always kind of like Marshall a little bit better than Rich Hill. While Rich Hill had the best overall pitch I still really like Marshalls curve and I think he knows how to pitch a lot better. not to mentino he is not a head case.
3. I remember when Mad Dog was here in 06 he said that he though marshall was special and that if he developed would be a fine pitcher one day. I hope I speak for all of us when I say that I trust Maddux's thoughts. He didnt have to say that . He said it because he believed it.
4. I wonder what this means for the fate of Shark. I wonder if he doesnt win the fifth starters job if he will start the year at Iowa. I would love to have him in the pen, but I dont want him to get typecasted into the role ala Jonathan Papelbon. Paps is amazing but I think Shark can start if he works on it and I think any starting pitcher who is solid tends to be more valuable then a one inning pitcher. I would not mind however if Shark spent one last year in the pen, but by doing that we might be hampering his career by not letting him work and developing on starting. Lets not forget that he is still relatively new to the full time starting thing. That is why I would not be unhappy if some RP stepped up in ST (tht is you Gaudin, Wuertz, Guzman, Ascanio) so that we could send Shark to AAA to let him develop.
5. What would the rotation look like? I just read Crasnicks piece on ESPN that the Giants to throw opposing hitters off are going to go with Sea Biscuit Unit Cain Terrible Contract and then Lowry or Sanchez... i say that we go with Z Lilly Demps Marhsall Harden so that we can best give Harden the rest he needs (BTW will we be precautously skipping him? I realyl dont like this idea that we are going into this sayng he might not pitch every fifth day)
6. That is all. Go Cubs

Could work, but its a big loss for the Pen
Im sure he can do an admirable job as a no 5, but his swing role was huge last year and I dont see who will fill that role, the lefty half of that role anyway.
But it seems we’ve got a health competition on our hands for that spot, so that should help, and most likely more than one guy will fill this role….Im sure Lou will miss Marshalls reliability in that swing role at some point.
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

whats jon lieber doing?
I wouldn’t mind having him around next year again….could be good for long relief and spot starts to fill marshall’s shoes.

Lieber wasn't very good last year...
… and had some minor injuries, and is now 39. I think he’s going to retire.
Besides, Lou never used him in the way you suggest.

At times
he was pretty good coming out the bullpen…more so in the beginning of the year before he was hurt.
It probably won’t be lieber but if marshall is going to take the 5th spot in the rotation I would guess that hendry is going to sign someone like lieber who can fill the long relief role and spot start. He could do that cheaply as he wouldn’t have to overpay for another 5th starter.

The Pie trade today may have provided just such a person in Garrett Olson.

amen
and who knows about Guzman? I’d like to think he’s going to hopefully compete for a pen spot, although I think he’s dangerously close to becoming another Prior .. the one of the Towel Drills …
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Hopefully if he stays healthy..
I think he could be a 6th or 7th inning guy leading into gregg/marmol. I wouldn’t want to see him pitching long outings with his injury history…just keep him to one inning outings and work him back like they did with woody.

exactly...and a win win for the cubs
olson will either fill the role I was talking about for us…which was needed….or he’ll be flipped in a deal for peavy. Either way I happily approve!!!

if Lou wasn’t going to use him down there anyway

yeah, ya'll mocked me when I said for the Roberts trade we should give up Hill instead of Marshall
Everyone thought Hill would have much more upside for this club. A year removed from that offer, and Marshall is the only one to really stick.
Erm, well if we are going to call Milton Bradley nicknames, mine is Fischer Price: yes, you heard it here first..

I like this
… there’s another reason this makes sense. If Marshall is effective in the No. 5 spot, he could be an attractive trade chip come mid-season.
It also puts a lot of pressure on Cotts to come up and (I think) it means Shark is in the pen for another year (which I’m a fan of).

sean
the trouble with marshall???he will p[itch 4 or 5 good innings in which the cubs dont score runs.then the other team will catch up to him.maybe if you run him out every 5th day maybe this will stop.

Marshall: Best Option
Chad Gaudin was not impressive last season. Ideally, I don’t want Gaudin to do much starting. Samardzija and Atkins don’t have any experience starting at the major league level. I’d like to see Marshall get those 25 starts. If there aren’t any major injuries in the starting rotation, I’m sure Marshall will be skipped in the rotation a few times. That “if” on those major injuries is a huge “if”. Marshall could very well be making at least 30 starts in 2009, if one or more of the starters go down. I hope Marshall himself doesn’t get injured.

Marshall May Be Too Important...
… as the swing guy.
Harden is looking more and more like our #5.

Pretty much what I expected from Lou.
Marshall is a fine option. Truth be told though, since pitching was the major culprit in the playoffs last season, I would have liked a little tweaking of the rotation. I realize there may be another move on the way but if not, Marshall was the only real option with experience. I still think given a chance, the shark will prove to be our 5th starter but clearly Lou isn’t ready to take chances.
I am in favor of a Peavy trade no matter what it takes because that rotation would be the best in baseball IMO. There isn’t a more solid backbone for a playoff run in 2009. I believe Rothschild can work the maturity out of pitchers like Z and the rest will follow. We are past 100 years now so…no pressure right?

Lou May Have Been Talking About...
… his club because he was asked. And, he will only answer based on who is on his club at that point in time.
As Sue says below, let’s wait to see what the club looks like when we head into ST, because the landscape may look different than it does today.

Lou says a lot of things.
Let’s wait until ST and see what happens.

The # 5 spot is Sean Marshall's to lose
If Marshall isn’t up to the task than Olson or Gaudin steps up to the head of the line.

5th starter and "Anointed" just don't go together for me...
This is like anointing someone as the latrine cleaner.

Mmm, that's overstating things a bit IMHO.
I’m guessing there are many, many pitchers out there who would endure a variety of embarassing/arduous reality-show-type trials to land a starting rotation spot with any major league baseball team – much less a contending major league baseball team like the Chicago Cubs. There’s no shame in being a fifth starter – it’s an important role on any good team. (And, oh yes, Sean Marshall has earned it.)
