official - Marquis to Rockies
I always liked Marquis. Thought he handled his role well. Larger deal incoming?
Here's a brief clip:
The Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs have agreed in principle to a trade that would send righthander Jason Marquis to the Rockies in exchange for reliever Luis Vizcaino, according to the Denver Post
...
Marquis, 30, is scheduled to make $9.875 million next season while Vizcaino will be in the final campaign of a two-year, $8 million pact. According to the report, Chicago will pay $1 million of the money owed to Marquis.

Not Official
The deal will not become official until next week, when the players are able to take physicals.
Also quoted from the article – not official yet.

Should I amend it to "mostly official"?

I think it's been "mostly official" for a couple/few days now.
The “deal in principle” has been pretty well publicized. It won’t be official until Marquis passes the physical and, last I heard, he’s on vacation with his family.
Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

Hendry
Any truth to the rumor the BLackhawks were hiding from Hendry yesterday afraid he’d trade them too?

That 8 million is WRONG
He has a buyout which short of a miracle will be used in 2010. Marquis did not deserve the grief he got from Cub
fans. He got too much money but he took the ball every 5th day ( or whenever Lou gave it to him) and was a very
effective hitter and pinch runner. If dumping DeRosa , Wood and Marquis merely results in scraping enough money to get Bradley I will be very disappointed.

Doesn't sound like it will happen...
And at this point (now that we’ve traded DeRosa and will be trading Marquis), I’m not sure that the alternative to Bradley is any better. Perhaps then we would more aggressively pursue the Peavy deal? But even so, that’d leave the offense substantially worse than last year’s offense (downgrading CF, RF, and probably 2B as well) along with a less impressive bullpen.
That said, I suspect we’ll be getting Bradley as soon as the Marquis trade is official.

I am a Cub fan but seriously this sucks. Probably another post is needed but why the F(*%$E#$#$ did Zell not sell the Cub
LAST YEAR ? or earlier when he could have gotten more desperately needed money and the Cubs could have a real owner
that might have let them keep DeRosa instead of dumping for an inferior player to save 3 million ?

The 8 million is only slightly wrong...
The article says he’s in the final year of a two-year, $8 million deal – not that he has two years left. He got $3.5 million last year, will get $3.5 million this year, and has a team option for $4 million (which will get declined) or a $500,000 buyout. That’s a 2 year, $7.5 million deal, of which he’s in hte final year.
by SouthernCub on Jan 2, 2009 1:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It is a two year FOUR million dollar year
Based on the strong probability the Cubs will take the buyout in 2010. Otherwise it would hardly be worth dumping Marquis.
"I am not ashamed to say I love Greg Maddux" - Jim Hendry
by Doggie Stalker on Jan 2, 2009 2:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Nope...
It was a 2 year, $7.5 million deal. These things are defined by the total amount guaranteed, not the amount per year.
The buyout will most certainly happen. If not, it would be a 3 year, $11 million deal.
by SouthernCub on Jan 2, 2009 2:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you're misreading the article...
The article says he’s in the FINAL year of a 2-year, $8 million (actually it’s $7.5 million) deal. That means there’s only one year left. That year is for $3.5 million. There’s also a $500,000 buyout for the 2010 season, which will be exercised. So it’s a 2-year, $7.5 million deal with one year and $4 million remaining (as the article basically says).
by SouthernCub on Jan 2, 2009 2:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry I just meant the Cubs are only on the HOOK for 4 million
Not they could KEEP him for a 2nd year for that. Bottom line he will cost the Cubs 4 million for one year not 7.5 for two thus
making the savings roughly 4 million over Marquis including the million they are putting in.
"I am not ashamed to say I love Greg Maddux" - Jim Hendry
by Doggie Stalker on Jan 2, 2009 2:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree on that... My point was simply...
That the article isn’t wrong. They don’t say we’re on the hook for $8 million to Vizcaino. They just say he’s in the last year of the 2-year $8 million deal. The savings is indeed about $4 million.

The grief from SOME Cub fans
Generally, I think the treatment of Marquis is pretty favorable on this site at least. Yes, some people don’t like him, but I think most people A) think he’s a great 5th starter, and B) think he’s overpaid but that’s not his fault.

At least one in every 36 million people are involved in fire hydrant related accidents a year. It’s almost double if you include canines.

I always liked Marquis
He did what he was told, 5th starter, ate innings, never bitched. Just think, Marquis, Ceda, Wood, Edmonds and DeRosa for Miles, Gregg, Gathright, Vizcaino three minor league players not on the Indians 40 man roster, and most likely Bradley. Wow have we improved.
This is a train wreck.

Two things.
1. You spelled “you’re” incorrectly.
2. Why don’t you back up your opinion? A three-year-old could simply say “you’re wrong.” But that same three-year-old may spell it correctly.

what does you being lazy have to do with this being a blog?
if you want to put your personal approach to life on display for all of BCB to see – by all means, go for it. There are plenty of dudes abiding here.
But the insinuation that your laziness is justified because BCB is a blog is way off base. Your laziness is just that – your laziness. Present it as such.

You can write any way you want here — that’s definitely true. But if you write with better grammar, syntax and punctuation, you will be much more likely to get others to read what you’re writing.

I like Marquis
but it is not true to say he never bitched. He said on more than one occasion that he did not want to ever be in the bullpen and would rather be on another team. Because of the rate that Lou overuses pinch hitters he will be missed more than people realize in that he was
almost as good as having an extra bench guy.
It will also be interesting if Jason Hirsch can make the rotation after being injured most of last season. It would probably be the first team
with two Jewish starting pitchers. Stone and Holtzman never overlapped and I can’t think of any others.

Briefly...
… Steve Stone and Ross Baumgarten were teammates with the 1978 White Sox.
Also, Norm Sherry was a backup catcher for the Dodgers while his brother Larry was a pitcher for them, from 1960-62.

Was Baumgarten a starter ?
Many teams have had two Jewish players and I think the Red Sox briefly had 3 when Youkalis, Stern and Kapler were all playing
but two starting pitchers would be interesting. I suspect the current Cubs are the first with two SP Canadians

The Cubs are taking the needed steps to acquire Bradley and Peavy...
…at least in my ignorant opinion they are. I will be disappointed if it ends at just Bradley. I’d recommend being patient here as the plane has not yet crashed in to the mountain.

I hope you are right.
I am not high on Bradley like others seem to be, especially if the 3 year deal is on the table. Abreu is a better option at most likely a 2 year deal.
Adding Peavy would make the offseason moves a C+ not adding him makes it a F, In my humble opinion. DeRosa will be sorely missed on this team.

so far we,ve lost 11 wins,34 saves, and a guy who could fill in almost anywhere.all to get an injury prone outfielder with a bad attitude. i hope this all works out and we dont end up with gathright in rf while bradley draws a paychech on the d.l. i would prefer dunn.

I would prefer that we get Bradley, Peavy and Dunn...
…but if this ends with bradley then it seems like a lot of effort and production lost to get a LHB. Bradley’s a good player with mental issues and if we stop at just adding him then I don’t see significant improvement, the team may even be worse as you suggest.
I cringe at the thought of Gathright starting, it would be the repeat of Dusty’s love for Neifi and so would provide amusing comments on this blog, but if that guy is starting regularly in 2009 then the Cubs will be much worse.
