Hendry's alleged "other" big move
I'm going to throw this wild prediction out there to the sharks.
Beyond inking Milton Bradley, the "other" big move that Hendry made loose reference about shall be Derrek Lee shipped off to new home. That new home will be the San Francisco Giants, with the Cubs getting Sanchez or Lowry in return.
But here's the kicker. This "other" big move shall lead to another "bigger" move. Adam Dunn shall be playing 1st base for the Cubs in 2009.

Just out of curiosity,
where was this next big move ever discussed? I haven’t heard anything about any upcoming move outside of Milton Bradley. Also, I believe Bruce Levine said something about Hendry asking Lee(after the end of the season) if he would waive his no-trade clause and Lee was said to have refused. Don’t get me wrong, I would have no problem trading away Derrek Lee, but it doesn’t appear likely.
Actually, Bruce Miles posted on his blog...
…that DLee has no intention of waiving his NTC for any team.
Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.
That post was made two months ago.
While I have seen no evidence that D-Lee will be traded, things can change in two months.
Also, on a semi-related topic, check out this post from the Seattle Times which claims Jeremy Hermida “will” be traded somewhere.
Maybe the Marlins could be interested in some of the pitchers we got in the DeRosa deal? If the Cubs dealt for Hermida, they could then deal Lee for pitching (if he’d waive the NTC) and sign Dunn.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Except if they trade for Hermida, they could just keep Lee
They would have their lefty middle-of-the-order hitter, with no need for Dunn.

Agreed...
They really only need the one lefty power bat. Hermida would provide that. I’m not holding my breath. But that would be nice.
BlueMike has given up on Lee. That’s the only real reason for this post.

Yes, DLee is in "decline mode"...
…exiling him from the meritocracy.

The thing about Lee...
…is he is a standup guy, and he may change his mind after thinking about this a while. He is one of a select few, that wouldn’t want to think about holding the Cubs up, if his being moved could help them win a championship. Also, with his daughters condition, I am sure he wouldn’t mind being closer to home.
We’ll see. I still think it’s a long shot, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

I think your analysis is spot-on.
While he doesn’t want to leave, I think he would for the right situation, be it personal or baseball.

Well
I think Manny will be back in LA considering their renegotiation of Jones’ contract.. Sooo SF should have interest in Lee..
With Lincecum, Cain, Lowry, Johnson, Zito and Sanchez, they have a starter to spare.
With Lewis, Rowand, Winn, Schierholtz and Roberts, they have an outfielder to spare..
SooooooooooO MAYBE the Cubs can get Peavy, Bradley and Dunn, and send a SF starter and OF over to SD, & Lee to SF… And of course, Hendry will backload Bradley and Dunn til 2011. haha :D
Get it done Jim!
SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!
Good Luck with that
Noah Lowry, really? he didnt even play last year, I think we could get more for Lee
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I thought we could get more for DeRo...
Just sayin’.

Well Lee has a better track record than DeRosa
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Footnotes to wild ass prediction
Derrek Lee hails from Sacramento. San Francisco would be a homecoming of sorts. I think he might waive his no-trade for that.
“Only” Nick Lowry? Well, this move would mostly about moving salary.
Jake Peavy? Not going to happen.
Leaves the following…
1. Soriano – LF
2. Miles – 2nd
3. Bradley – RF
4. Ramirez – 3rd
5. Dunn – 1st
6. Soto – Cat
7. Kosuke / Johnson – CF platoon
8. Theriot – SS
Bench…Kosuke / Johnson platoon, Gathright, Cedeno, Fontenot, Backup catcher (Paul Bako?)
So giving up Lee...
And getting Dunn drops us to a roughly .500 team? I don’t buy that.
Someday we'll go all the way...

Adam Dunn at 1st ?
Is everyone else still laughing so hard they cried. Hey I think Manny at 1st might work myself .
"I am not ashamed to say I love Greg Maddux" - Jim Hendry
As one of my friends, who is a Reds fan says:
“I never valued defense at first base until I watched Adam Dunn attempt to play it.”
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
I know Hendry has dumped a couple beloved Cubs...
…but he would be drawn and quartered for making a deal like this. Bradley in right and Dunn at first? HUGE defensive risk. (And I’m saying that as someone who, if the Cubs insist on picking up a FA lefty slugger, supports the idea of acquiring Dunn for right field.)
And I’m not convinced DLee would waive his NTC to go to the Giants unless maybe – maybe – San Fran finds a way to pick up Manny and then maybe – maybe – Derrek would want to stay in Cali to play for a team that could conceivably compete for that division. Still, this prediction is a huge stretch, bordering on madness, which will more than likely lower your batting average, BLou.

OPS for Blue Mike?
You mean “Oh, Pound Sand!”
He’s a Hall-of-Famer on that already!
Fontenot (fon-te-no): Cajun for "scrappy"
Why would Lee ...
waive his no-trade to go from a team that won 97 games to a team that likely won’t make the playoffs (assuming Manny goes to the Dodgers)? I see what you’re saying about a homecoming, but Lee has been a Cub for five years. I can’t imagine he’s not comfortable here.
That said, I could buy this IF we knew Lee had a burning desire to leave (say, if he didn’t like Lou). But that’s not the case.
Furthermore
Lee has a child with a rare illness. No doubt he and Mrs. Lee have found the best possible doctors and are getting her the best possible treatment (although there’s no cure, per se). Unless that treatment is offered in California, I don’t see why parents would want to change anything about their routine when going through that kind of challenge.
Fontenot (fon-te-no): Cajun for "scrappy"
Didn't Lee help fund some research
at the University of Iowa for this? If so, Chicago is a lot closer to those experts than SF.
"Who's Bob Brenly? The guy that used to be the manager for Arizona?" ~ Alfonso Guilleard Soriano

Iirc USF is the top medical research school.
SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!
My point was that
this is an incredibly rare condition and there is only one institution in the US researching a cure. So the University of Iowa happens to rank number one in this very specific area.
"Who's Bob Brenly? The guy that used to be the manager for Arizona?" ~ Alfonso Guilleard Soriano
Well shame on me
I’m going to take the shattered remains of my wild ass prediction and bury it behind the garage. After all, who am I to derail the 500 posts per day devoted to Jake Peavy, the pipedream that is never ever in a million years going to happen. And far be it for me to offer diversion from the fountain of posting that is Brian Roberts.
Peavy not happening may be reality
since Jeff Moorad resigned as chief executive officer of the Diamondbacks to pursue ownership of the Padres.
Supposedly, Moorad has agreed to keep the roster intact and Peavy on the Padres’ payroll.
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
While we're throwing out acquisitions, Manny to Padres?
Moorad once represented Manny Ramirez as an agent. The question is will Manny’s current agent, Scott Boras, and Moorad get together since they were once foes. Money talks.

WHY CAN’T WE JUST GET THE DEAL DONE WITH PEAVEY AND ROBERTS ? WE NOW HAVE EXTRA PROPECTS WITH THE DEROSA TRADE .. ROBERTS WOULD FIT THE CUBS LINEUP PERFECT FOR THE SWITCH HITTING HITTER THE CUBS ARE LOOKING FOR . FILL THE HOLE FOR THE LEAD OFF MAN , AND ALSO WOULD ADD A BETTER GLOVE AND ARM AT SECOND BASE .. WITH PEAVEY . WE WOULD NEVER GO INTO A FIVE OR SIX GAME LOSING STREAK .. ZAMBRANO , PEAVEY , DEMPSTER , HARDEN , AND LILLY . I WOULD SAY THAT HAS TO BE THE BEST STARTING PITCHING LINE UP IN MLB … OH , AND SIGN BRADLEY FOR MORE LEFT HANDED POWER ..

Confirmed: this won't happen
Bruce Levine was just talking about NTC’s on Talking Baseball just now. He said Lee was approached in November about waiving his NTC for a trade to a west coast team, and Lee wasn’t interested.
LETS GET PEAVEY , ROBERTS , BRADLEY
LETS ADD PEAVEY . ROBERTS , BRADLEY , AND START THE SEASON TODAY ..
Sigh...
Attempt at levity fails on all accounts on the very serious BCB blog. The veiled reference to the movie Christmas Story was lost among the humorless crowd. Oh well. Sure beats 24/7 coverage on the two things never to happen in our lifetime, they being Jake Peavy and Brian Roberts joining the Cubs.
I can't be sure...
but I thought that I heard the sound of “Taps” being played. Gently. :)

Oh Blue Mike
The ridiculous shit you say about baseball gives me something to laugh about every day. I have no idea what goes on inside your head, but for some reason I think of BCB as your own personal fantasy camp or something. You are a general nuisance, but I just can’t quit you…you’re like a drug or something. Keep up the good work!
Are you claiming
