Hendry's alleged "other" big move

I'm going to throw this wild prediction out there to the sharks.

Beyond inking Milton Bradley, the "other" big move that Hendry made loose reference about shall be Derrek Lee shipped off to new home.    That new home will be the San Francisco Giants, with the Cubs getting Sanchez or Lowry in return.

But here's the kicker.   This "other" big move shall lead to another "bigger" move.   Adam Dunn shall be playing 1st base for the Cubs in 2009.

Just out of curiosity,

where was this next big move ever discussed? I haven’t heard anything about any upcoming move outside of Milton Bradley. Also, I believe Bruce Levine said something about Hendry asking Lee(after the end of the season) if he would waive his no-trade clause and Lee was said to have refused. Don’t get me wrong, I would have no problem trading away Derrek Lee, but it doesn’t appear likely.

by dakoose on Jan 2, 2009 11:12 PM CST reply actions

Actually, Bruce Miles posted on his blog...

…that DLee has no intention of waiving his NTC for any team.

That post was made two months ago.

While I have seen no evidence that D-Lee will be traded, things can change in two months.

Also, on a semi-related topic, check out this post from the Seattle Times which claims Jeremy Hermida “will” be traded somewhere.

Maybe the Marlins could be interested in some of the pitchers we got in the DeRosa deal? If the Cubs dealt for Hermida, they could then deal Lee for pitching (if he’d waive the NTC) and sign Dunn.

Except if they trade for Hermida, they could just keep Lee

They would have their lefty middle-of-the-order hitter, with no need for Dunn.

The thing about Lee...

…is he is a standup guy, and he may change his mind after thinking about this a while. He is one of a select few, that wouldn’t want to think about holding the Cubs up, if his being moved could help them win a championship. Also, with his daughters condition, I am sure he wouldn’t mind being closer to home.

We’ll see. I still think it’s a long shot, but I wouldn’t rule it out.

Well

I think Manny will be back in LA considering their renegotiation of Jones’ contract.. Sooo SF should have interest in Lee..

With Lincecum, Cain, Lowry, Johnson, Zito and Sanchez, they have a starter to spare.

With Lewis, Rowand, Winn, Schierholtz and Roberts, they have an outfielder to spare..

SooooooooooO MAYBE the Cubs can get Peavy, Bradley and Dunn, and send a SF starter and OF over to SD, & Lee to SF… And of course, Hendry will backload Bradley and Dunn til 2011. haha :D

Get it done Jim!

Footnotes to wild ass prediction

Derrek Lee hails from Sacramento. San Francisco would be a homecoming of sorts. I think he might waive his no-trade for that.

“Only” Nick Lowry? Well, this move would mostly about moving salary.

Jake Peavy? Not going to happen.

Leaves the following…

1. Soriano – LF
2. Miles – 2nd
3. Bradley – RF
4. Ramirez – 3rd
5. Dunn – 1st
6. Soto – Cat
7. Kosuke / Johnson – CF platoon
8. Theriot – SS

Bench…Kosuke / Johnson platoon, Gathright, Cedeno, Fontenot, Backup catcher (Paul Bako?)

I know Hendry has dumped a couple beloved Cubs...

…but he would be drawn and quartered for making a deal like this. Bradley in right and Dunn at first? HUGE defensive risk. (And I’m saying that as someone who, if the Cubs insist on picking up a FA lefty slugger, supports the idea of acquiring Dunn for right field.)

And I’m not convinced DLee would waive his NTC to go to the Giants unless maybe – maybe – San Fran finds a way to pick up Manny and then maybe – maybe – Derrek would want to stay in Cali to play for a team that could conceivably compete for that division. Still, this prediction is a huge stretch, bordering on madness, which will more than likely lower your batting average, BLou.

Why would Lee ...

waive his no-trade to go from a team that won 97 games to a team that likely won’t make the playoffs (assuming Manny goes to the Dodgers)? I see what you’re saying about a homecoming, but Lee has been a Cub for five years. I can’t imagine he’s not comfortable here.

That said, I could buy this IF we knew Lee had a burning desire to leave (say, if he didn’t like Lou). But that’s not the case.

by elgato on Jan 3, 2009 9:13 AM CST reply actions

Furthermore

Lee has a child with a rare illness. No doubt he and Mrs. Lee have found the best possible doctors and are getting her the best possible treatment (although there’s no cure, per se). Unless that treatment is offered in California, I don’t see why parents would want to change anything about their routine when going through that kind of challenge.

Peavy not happening may be reality

since Jeff Moorad resigned as chief executive officer of the Diamondbacks to pursue ownership of the Padres.

Supposedly, Moorad has agreed to keep the roster intact and Peavy on the Padres’ payroll.

Moorad once represented Manny Ramirez as an agent. The question is will Manny’s current agent, Scott Boras, and Moorad get together since they were once foes. Money talks.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
