"I have had no discussions with the Cubs or any other club about Peavy since the winter meetings, so there is really nothing to update," Padres General Manager Kevin Towers said via e-mail last night. "Our position remains the same. We are not pursuing other clubs about potentially moving Jake and nobody has contacted us either since the winter meetings."

"Obviously, we took note of the trade that took place (Sunday)," Axelrod said Monday, en route to an appointment with Peavy. "You would certainly not be out of line to surmise from all of (the Cubs' moves) that they might be working toward something. But I haven't heard a word that anything is different."

"I think too much is being made of the Chicago/Baltimore trade as it might relate to us," Padres CEO Sandy Alderson said Monday. "Chicago had a crowded outfield, probably needed to move Pie, had limited interest in him among other clubs and knew what Baltimore would give up from the earlier discussions with us."

According to San Diego Union News

According to the local San Diego news paper .. The Padres are still 5 million dollars over budget .. And the Padres have sold only 10,000 season tickets . The Padres are expecting the lowest fan turnout since 1994 .. I don’t know how to link this post to the San Diego union news .. So , 5 million over budget .. Kind of leads you to believe .. and with the trade of Olson .. Too many common denominators ..

I hope so

but not going to get all excited like i did last year with Roberts.

What to do, with Larry Hughe?

by Rudey on Jan 20, 2009 5:49 PM CST up reply actions

I DO TOO

What a pitching lineup .. Peavy , Zambrano , Dempster , Lilly , Harden , sometimes throw Marshall in or maybe Gaudin … It would be hard for the Cubs to go on a long losing streak with that starting lineup

Sandy Alderson says, "probably needed to move Pie, had limited interest in him among other clubs..."

Says about all you need to know regarding the market value of Felix Pie. Also suggests that perhaps we shouldn’t get terribly worked up about Olson.

I still adhere to the belief that Jake Peavy to the Cubs is dead.

5 million

5 million over budget . 10,000 season ticket holders .. moore says he is NOT putting any money in the club this year .. Giles has no trade clause

by CUBFANINAZ on Jan 20, 2009 6:49 PM CST reply actions

Of all players

Of all players .. to trade for .. Olson .. too coincidental … When it was mentioned in the papers a number of times thar Towers is highly excited about this prospect . and it was going to take a third team to be involved … O’s ….

Giles

Has a no-trade and doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere. Or is it a limited no-trade? I read earlier that he is having a messy offseason, trouble with an ex or something. I cannot remember the specifics, but just recall it was pretty ugly. Might decrease his value and make it more difficult to trade him.

He's accused of habitually physically assaulting his long-time girlfriend

And there are grainy video images from a bar incident to back up the claim that Brian Giles is a gutless cowardly woman-beater. Suffice to say there is zero chance a douche bag like Brian Giles will be joining the Cubs anytime soon.

Here's a link for a news story about it

It has the grainy video. It’s not conclusive, but it sure looks pretty bad for Giles.

towers probably isnt saying anything

because hendry probably told him to keep his mouth shut……hendry doesnt seem to like working with people who leak info to the media, and I could envision hendry reopening talks under the condition that towers keep quiet.

Link to article and assessment

SD Union article

Okay the key point is this report is this:
Padres CEO Sandy Alderson, who has said Peavy likely will remain with the club until Opening Day, recently confirmed that San Diego’s payroll projects about $5 million above budget.

“Right now, what we have projected is between $44 million and $45 million," Alderson said Friday. Asked if that number is about $5 million above budget, Alderson said, "Right now, it would be.”

Alderson gave no indication that either Moores or prospective part-owner Jeff Moorad would expand the payroll.

Though Alderson said last year that a $15 million cash call was planned for 2009, Moores has made it known that’s off the table.

What does this mean? A Cash call is a debt that the Padres need to come up with $15M to close a probable short term note. They also need reserves for this year and they are coming up $5M short.

They are at $33.5M right now and with arb and minimum requirements it brings the payroll to $45M . Moving Peavy solves everything. If they get the 6 players they add probably 4 league minimums at $2M and subtract $11M or knocking down to $36M and possibly where they really need to be with the eroding sales in tics.

furthermore I can see Giles being traded in June/July

$9m then would be mean a relief of $4.5-6M for them with a possibility they might throw in $1M for some spare part from a minor league system.

This would reduce their total liability to $32M for the year. They are fast looking to join FL, TB, KC, Pitt for the ranks. Next year I can see them trading Young and then even Gonzales and going totally minimums.

Jake Peavy isn't going to be traded

It’s waste of time for Cub fans to keep talking this subject to death. Alderson and Towers are going to hang onto Peavy and wait out the process of a new owner taking control in San Diego. Ask yourself this, would YOU trade Jake Peavy for a bunch of marginal prospects from the Cubs in a deal that doesn’t include Josh Vitters? Answer is hell no. Being $5 million over-budget is something that can be worked out without trading away one of the top 5 starting pitchers in the National League for a bag of peanuts.

Seems

Every day there is a new “Peavy Trade Rumor” thread, and they almost mirror each other. We all make the same case and points at least once in each thread. I know this is something that we keep talking about, because it continues to get plugged on radio, tv, paper, internet, the bottom of a gym shoe, smoke signal, Priors towel, etc.

I for one will say i am done talking about this until there is something new regarding it or I see a post I want to reply to, whichever happens first.

Because I thought they were. But I might be wrong.

Nope.

David Axelrod has only one sibling — a sister.
