Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Ricketts is the Winner

As expected, Tom Rickets is the rumored choice as the new owner of the Cubs.  I think that he's a fine choice and was my favorite of the alternatives left.  I think he has the deep pockets to improve the team as is nescessary.  I also think he is going to bring an atmosphere of quick decisison making and to provide the ballclub with what it needs to be competitive.

I thik the Cubs got a large boost just by removing McPhail and inserting Kenney, but I hope this will be even better.

I forgot to add

that I was surprise that the price is $900M. That would tell me that the stadium is included int he purchase price. Ricketts would be able to sell it at a later date if he so desired, though I think that would not be a good move on Ricketts part. Controlling interest in both is worth more together than apart.

DID YOU NOT READ THE FRONT PAGE OF BCB?!?!

Good

Ricketts was the best choice among the rumored finalists. He may have been the best choice of anyone offering a bid.

Of course, we’re all guessing as to what type of owner he is going to be. Let’s hope the first non-corporate owner not named “Wrigley” since World War I can bring up a championship.

see my signature

I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

I was just thinking that

Hendry should be on the phone with him right now getting the green light!

I have nothing funny or creative to write.

by Canadian Cubs Fan on Jan 22, 2009 5:21 PM CST up reply actions

Is he a generous spender?

Maybe the Cubs can pick up more than Peavy. There’s some bargains in the free agent market…

SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!

by CubFaninCA on Jan 22, 2009 5:25 PM CST reply actions

He's from the area.

Ricketts is. And a Cubs fan, supposedly. So he’s likely to railroad any decision Hendry makes that would improve the team.

Come on RIcketts!

I sure as hell you have the same passion as all of us do.

Gives a little payroll bump for Peavy!

by EJThunder on Jan 22, 2009 5:40 PM CST reply actions

Here's a dream..

This is iffy but what if we could get a payroll bump, sign Dunn, trade for Peavy, somehow set up an enticing deal for the Orioles including Derrek Lee to get Brian Roberts (I know, I kind of cringe).

That is really farfetched but hey, that would sure be something.

by EJThunder on Jan 22, 2009 5:45 PM CST reply actions

Exactly what I was thinking, except I'll take it a step further

In addition to the Lee for Roberts deal, we also trade Soriano to the Reds for Joey Votto and ARam down to Texas for Josh Hamilton and Hank Blalock. The final piece of the puzzle is trading Soto and Theriot to the Twins for Joe Mauer.

Lineup would be
Roberts- 2B
Mauer – C
Bradley- RF
Hamilton – CF
Dunn – LF
Votto – 1B
Blalock – 3B
Fontenot – SS

Sure it will take millions to buy out the NTCs of DLee, Soriano, and ARam, not to mention many more millions we’d have to eat in order to make those deals with budget concious teams like Twins and Reds, but it’d be worth it just to hear Lou say…

“Boy, I think we need to get a little more right-handed…”

We need to change the title or delete the thread then....

I saw the title and I was under the impression that it was finalized.

Our long, semi-national nightmare is over?

Not sure how to take this, that link doesnt seem too official, neither does the Sun-Times one.

For all this waiting, I really hope the new owner isnt a tightwad….god wouldnt that be poetic justice

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Is why he is here. He knows that he can get the best advice on the team from here.

this won't be socialism but the business ratio runs like this

Red Sox use about 60% of their turnstyle direct revenues on payroll does not include broadcast and other tertiary revenues sources.
Cubs are using about 57% and that does include discounted broadcast revenues
Yankess are using about 74% but their broadcast revenues are double anyone else.
Mets are using about 54%
LAD are using about 56%

This is quite consistent so as long as the Cubs sell out, sell out at high prices they will spend $$

Alright

So does this whole process have to be fully completed before Ricketts would be able to give Hendry the green light on the Peavy deal? If so, how long is this process going to take before it is completely official?
