OT Who is your favorite local sportscaster?

With the recent, and overdue, firing of Dan McNeil from ESPN AM 1000, it got me thinking who do I really enjoy listening or watching when it comes to Chicago sports.

Star-divide

I think of names like Mark Giangreco, Mark Silverman, Ryan Baker, Mike Adamle, Mike Murphy, Peggy Kazinski, Jim Rose, Rich King etc.. But I don't have a clear cut favorite. I'd like to know if you have a favorite local sportscaster. If you're not in Chicago, maybe you can add to the mix with your favorite national sportscaster.

Or how about your ALL TIME local/national favorites?

Like Tim Wiegal or Jim Shorts "That's Good!" or Bob Costas, (the Sandberg Game)Dan Patrick, Jim Rome, Keith Jackson, Marv Albert YESSS!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

My two favorite radio shows are

Waddle and Silvy along with Boers and Bernstein. I always have a good time listening to them on the radio.

Gus Johnson is by far my favorite national broadcaster.

Let the Blaine Gabbert era begin.

Boers & Bernstein just hate everybody, including their callers

Waddle & Silvy for the win...

They blow everybody else on ESPN 1000 out of the water. Mac, Jurko, and Harry are OK, but I can’t really stand them for more than 20 minutes. Listening to Tirico and Van Pelt is worse than a prostate exam. Mike and Mike in the morning is freaking horrible too. Every time I hear (Big) Mike’s commercial about “Manstink” I want to throw my computer monitor out the window.

Marc Jean Greco is pretty good, and is downright hilarious on Tuesdays (I think) when he is on Waddle & Silvy. Guy deserves his own show for sure.

Al, do you know why Ch 7 sports does the lips moving in a photo thing when they're playing an audio clip?

At first I thought it was supposed to be a humor bit – you know, the lighthearted amusing piece that’s usually the last story in a segment, kind of a way to wrap things up before going to commercial. But for a long stretch there, every time there was a story where they had a sound byte quote from a sports figure, they’d put up a picture of the guy, but clearly there was a hole cut/blurred out where the mouth should be, and replaced with a pair of lips that would move, supposedly in synch with the audio.

I haven’t seen it lately so maybe they’ve stopped, but then again, I haven’t watched Ch. 7 sports as much as I used to – sorry Al – so maybe they’ve stopped. Anyway, I just thought it was an odd and somewhat demeaning practice and was just curious why someone in mgmt thought it’d be a good idea.

Hampton and Holmes is growing on me

I thought it was an odd pairing at first, but I am starting to like them. I think they are learning to compliment eachother pretty well. Boers and Bernstine, not so much. Bernstine is too vain, he must prove to every caller that he is smarter than they are. Boers is just an old man with nothing to talk about but what sounds come out of his body these days.

by Nibbles on Jan 22, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions

Holmes

I agree on Lawrence and really have come to like him, even before he had his own show. Hampton, on the other hand, I am not a fan of. I could easily see McNeill teamed up with Holmes once his contract is up at WMVP. A transition from Hampton and Holmes to Boers and Bernstein would be fantastic. Bring back the cross show banter!

I used to like Dan but he has taken his hate of Grossman too far and is the main reason I hope Rex goes elsewhere and succeeds and comes back and takes the football and sticks it up Dan’s patootie.

Boers and Bernstein

I like them for precisely the exact reason many don’t. They’re not here to kiss up to athletes and they expect callers to have cogent thoughts. They ask tough questions and when fans call in with ridiculous, baseless thoughts, they call them on it. Bernstein analyzes sports from a very intellectual standpoint and goes beyond surface reasons that teams are winning or losing and I believe that beneath the sometimes crude and snippy nature of the show, they really are trying to get fans to take a deeper look and smarten up. I also believe that their interviews of athletes are far superior to any other sports radio show in the city as they don’t just ask the obvious questions.

by dmlichte on Jan 22, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions

There's no problem with being an intellect

but you don’t have to be arrogant to get your message across.

That’s why I believe Bernstein has remained just a local talent
as oppose to other intellects who have excelled nationally

I might be wrong, but most radio-tv hosts would welcome a national gig
ESPN, HBO, NBC, CBS, etc…..Bernstein is too smart/arrogant for his own good

National

Bernstein has subbed a few times for Dan Patrick nationally and its a totally different show. The arrogance that some people complain of is part of Dan and Terry’s shtick. When he has done Patrick’s show solo he is much less edgy. Frankly I’m not so sure that Bernstein’s goal is to go national. He has a young family and has said that while he would love to return to doing play-by-play his desire to have time for his family takes priority (likely also travel). I think its more likely that his future is to be a local morning guy with a wider spread of subjects and one or two contributing co-hosts (similar to what Mike North had). I think he’d really succeed when he could talk about issues more important than sports and not have so many meathead fans calling in suggesting stupid trades or that the Bears will beat the Packers because the Bears are a cold weather team.

I got home, practiced it over and over, called up and the screener put me right on the air because he thought it was hilarious. Then when I was on the air and B&B were talking to me, I totally choked, I barely got out “this is Dusty’s Snitch…” before I started going “uh…uh…uh…” they ended it quickly, and deservedly so. Mully and Hanley

Best thing 670 ever did was get rid of M.N. and move these guys into the morning slot. These guys are professionals, but when I listen to the broadcast it has the feel of a couple buddies sitting around just talking sports…it is very smooth and authentic.

I think they are hands down the best local sportscasters.

Best local sports announcer is Jeff Joniak and Pat Hughes a close 2nd.

Worst local sports personality is either Jurko from ESPN 1000 or Dan Bernstein.

Worst local sports announcer is Ron Santo or Darrin Jackson (Sox). Hawk Harrelson is not good, but he gets a slight pass because he has been around forever and could be okay with a better partner.

by smitster2008 on Jan 23, 2009 8:04 AM CST reply actions

Well...

Sports announcer? Pat Foley is the greatest sports announcer on the planet. He was born to call Blackhawks hockey games and is a gift to Chicago that is not nearly as appreciated as he should be. I LOVE Pat Foley, and so do 99.99% of the rest of diehard Blackhawks fans.

Radio personality? Meh. I don’t get into the screaming talking heads on radio. The only tolerable, sane and truly knowledgeable one of the bunch is Dave Kaplan. And even he has started to get a little too cocky and big for his britches.

TV sports anchor? Who cares. I can’t think of the last time I got precious sports news via the 6:00 or 10:00 news. In this age of the Internet and instant news the role of nighly sports anchor is going the way of the dinosaur. Dan Roan is pretty good I guess.

Foley is the man

It’s too bad it came to the ultimate stupidity of dollar bill and silver-tongued Bob Pulford that lead to Pat’s dismissal a couple seasons back. He landed with the Wolves for a couple years, for which I was grateful. And now he’s even better since he’s not relegated to simulcasts. TV is so much different than radio and the way the ‘Hawks were set up for so many years didn’t do much justice to how good a TV play-by-play guy he really is.

Most sports “anchors” aren’t what they used to be with one exception, Giangreco. I like Giangreco because he could talk on TV without the telepromter, not too many could do that. And that comes from deep knowledge and understanding.

Kaplan is a corporate ass kisser. He is so transparent its not funny. When he was on ’GN radio exclusively, he had some credibility. But now he tries to talk up his overall sports knowledge and for me at least, when he starts talking pucks, he falls flat on his face, almost as egregious as Jim Rose.

Old Timers

For me, the thrill of listening to Lloyd Petit was something. As good as Pat Foley is, you really had to hear Lloyd do the Blackhawks games. I also enjoyed listening to Jim Durham do the Bulls games.

I live out of town, so I can’t really comment on the current crop of local broadcasters. i remember Bruce Roberts, Johnny Morris, and Brent Musberger at channel 2 and Greg Gumbel and Tim Weigel (before he went to channel 7) over at channel 5.

Of the local current game broadcasters, I like the Pats, Hughes and Foley. Having lived around the country, I can tell you that Hawk Harrelson is among the worst, so full of himself and doesn’t tell you the whole game, only if things are going in the Sox favor.

Nationally, I always liked Keith Jackson for college and Pat Summerall for the pros. You knew if heJackson was doing your school’s game, it was a big game. Of the current crop, I like Jim Nantz. If he could muzzle Billy Packer, it would be even better.

On the opposite side, my least favorite program had to be “Mac, Jurko, and Harry”. I don’t know what it was, but I just really disliked listening to their program. It didn’t help that it was on for like 5 hours in the afternoon with an hour recap/rehash of it afterwards. It looks like they got rid of Mac now and replaced him with Carmen DeFalco, and renamed it to the “Afternoon Saloon”.

Not sure how this is going to change the show, but I am a fan of DeFalco’s. I think he’s a really good up and coming guy here in Chicago sports radio.

I’m not sure she’ll make the Peggy Kuzinski level of sports knowledge and talk but she’s doing OK.

The weird thing about Bernstein...

is that he once subbed for Dan Patrick while Dan was on vacation, or something. It was so weird because he was really, really good. He spoke to the callers with a lot more respect and he actually sounded like he was having fun. I remember being totally suprised and wondered why he didn’t use this approach on the Score. Whenever I listen to him, he always sounds so annoyed with the callers and like he doesn’t want to be on the air; like he is substituting for someone else and this isn’t really his job.

by smitster2008 on Jan 23, 2009 11:01 AM CST reply actions

On Dan Patrick

He’s subbed a few times for Patrick. It is a totally different show and different format. As I’ve said, there is a certain amount of schtick with his partnering with Boers. The other thing that you have to realize is that the meatball caller element isn’t nearly as present on a national show. There aren’t people calling in recommending the Cubs trade Micah Hoffpauir for Johan Santana and there aren’t people calling in saying the Bears need to bring Ditka back. Its a totally different beast.

Suzy Kolber. She’s great. Not only is she beautiful, but more importantly she is knowledgeable and always on top of her game. She’s just a cute jock who got the perfect job for herself. I wish ESPN would broaden her duties. She can handle it.

I have to agree. She does her homework and never comes off as an

air head. She’s much better than a lot of the talking heads on that network.

Besides Cubs announcers, I like the following

Waddle & Silvy
Stacey King (funniest announcer anywhere) & Neil Funk

I liked the guy...

Sure, he wasn’t out of this world but I liked listening to him call games on WGN / CSN. I was a little disappointed that they let him go but it’s not like they replaced him with a new guy. I do enjoy listening to Funk and King.

B& B are two faced

Boers and Bernstein I like them for precisely the exact reason many don’t.

They are way more gracious when a guy is on the air with them. When the subject is in studio with them they are consumate ass kissers. Then, a day later they pull out the knives. They are total BS on the air.

If anyone can bear it

Listen to B & B for an hour and you will know two things

1. Bernstein is smart and he’ll let you know it

2. B & B will put someone down, an athlete, a caller, etc.
they can’t go an hour without doing it

ok

You and others have said that Bernstein will let you know how smart he is. I think thats total crap. He’s never said that “I went to Duke…” unless someone asks him where he went to college or if its pertinant to the question (i.e. talking about Mike Krzyzewski or other Duke issues). Bernstein talks like he has a brain, which is different than the vast majority of sports talk show hosts. He thinks analytically. If talking like he is intelligent offends people than that is pretty sad.

Milton Bradley...

…Would disagree with your assessment that they are gracious to guys when they’re on the air. I’ve been a long time listener and they’ve never been shy about asking the tough questions.

Boudreau and Lloyd

When I was a young lad Lou Boudreau and Vince Lloyd on the radio were a great team. It was wonderful listening to Cubs games out in the back yard during the summer.

They had fun calling the game and I had fun listening.

ah great call

I’m too young to have heard them but they I caught Boudreau towards the end of his WGN carrer

From what I can remember Lou B was very good.

Jack Quinlan and Charley Grimm

In 1960 Charley Grimm became the booth announcer with Jack Quinlan after being fired a month or so into the season – actually replacing Lou Boudreau who became the manager. As an announcer, Grimm was absolutely awful matched only by Harry Carey in his later years with the Cubs. On the other hand, Jack Quinlan was wild and wonderful and when he died in a auto crash during spring training in 1964, it was never really the same again, at least on the radio. I will say the best announcer I ever heard broadcast was out of KMOX in St Louis in the 1960s. His name was Harry Carey and there was nobody better during those years. If you ever get the chance to hear him do Stan Musial’s last at bat, you won’t forget it.
