THE TRUTH ABOUT PEAVY, PLEASE!?!?!
So im really gettin fed up with readin conflicting stories from people with their 'sources' saying the Peavy deal will go down, then it wont, then Vitters is the main piece, then Marshall is the main piece, then whatever else.
In all honesty what is everyone feeling about this deal, is it or is it not going to happen because I dont wanna keep wastin my time readin every article anymore if it truly is Brian Roberts part 2.
ALSO if this deal is gonna go down is it expected that it will be soon or is it gonna be a last week of spring training type deal like Maddux? I am clearly gettin restless ha
Why i think it will happen-
Hendry said he would NOT trade DeRo unless it led to a Peavy deal, The ownership issue seems to be cleared (mostly), they shedded Marquis' salary, they added Olsen who was sought by the Pads, they hedged their bets on DeRo with Miles, Pie with Gathright, and Olsen/Marshall with eachother(whichever one stays).
Why it may not-
The Pads said they want it to be done by February 1st, Marshal and Vitters combined should be too much, the ownership situation may be delayed.

The truth about Peavy.
He is a right-handed pitcher for the San Diego Padres.

$8M x 2
The Rangers are concerned about him, the RANGERS. A team notorious for not making the best decisions about pitchers. I’m more leary of Sheets in light of this concern and whether or not Harden will be able to pitch as much this year as I thought a couple months ago.

Awe
you just said it. It is well documented the Rangers to not have a clue when selecting pitchers. Ala Chan Ho Park. So logic will tell us that if the Rangers are concerned about Sheets, that Sheets is as healthy as a horse. Go get ’em.

Wish it were that easy
Then again, the market is dropping. Hendry has his one ear open and the other with a phone glued to it. If there’s a chance, he’ll do it. I just think there’s a couple more pressing issues.

maybe Sheets is a good idea...
if he will sign for 8 mil a year. Between Sheets and Harden one of them will be on the DL, just hopefully not at the same time. If they can make 30 – 35 starts between both of them you might get 20 wins for 15 mil( I think Harden is signed at 7mil) and be able to baby them until Oct.

I thought of a Sheets signing in
lieu of Peavy on 2 fronts; lesser overall total contract price and use of the players needed in a Peavy deal to go get Roberts.
But that was before Harden’s injury report and hanging my hat on the O’s not re-signing B-Rob. And that could be caused by paying huge bucks for Markaikis (ended up being $66M for 6) and not being able to afford Roberts, thus forcing his trade before the NWT deadline.

And the Cubs don’t expect more than 20-25 starts out of Harden. Can’t do that.

I will admit
I am not up to snuff on the current health of Sheets. I note he had problems over a three year period prior to last year. Last year he logged almost 200 innings and made 31 starts. I recall he missed a couple of starts for some aliment or another.
He is only 29 years old, and just might still have plenty left in the tank. Granted he has never had outstanding numbers, but still his career ERA is under four. Add him to the mix and get a six man rotation going. And this is coming from someone who misses the four man rotation.

He got hurt at the end of the year...
Which is why his start total didn’t look too bad for the season. While he and his agent are saying it was a minor injury, there is a lot of concern among baseball folks that the injury was more severe. There is also concern about the fact that he hasn’t been the most durable guy in the past.

why is Vitters Babe Ruth or even Mike Schmidt or Bill Madlock?
Vitters is not any of these, he appears to have the promise of Bill Madlock, but more like a Bagwell, both very good players….very good but not untouchable.
Will Vitters be on the squad this or next year? No possibly 2012 if not 2013.
By then the Cubs will have either been in the WS, won the WS and trying to start retooling and by then MLB will be in full contraction where possibly Vitters will be part of a reverse draft.

because we routinely trade or give up on our best prospects
and then bitch that WE HAVE nothing left. Right now it is not at all clear that the trade for Hardin was worth it.
Honesty if there were some great young SS with a Gold Glove and speed then I would be willing to trade a big part of the farm but
right now Peavy who is very, very good is only needed because we can’t trust Hardin to be healthy. I don’t like continually trading top prospects especially for a non critical need.

you make a good point. But honestly who have the Cubs traded that has become an all star? I can only think of Willis, but other than that. A few years back Choi was going to be our star FB. Many of us moaned when he was traded. Bobby Hill comes to mind as well.
I really think the Cubs are playing the same PR game the Braves have done for years. Hype these players up to trade them. Time will tell us what will become of Pie. But frankly (resisting to write my dear) chances are he will go by way of Choi,

why trade our best prospect for a pitcher with elbow problems?
Contraction might happen, so might a Tsunami, so why use that as a basis for organizational philosophy?
Then would you trade our best prospect in 2012 , 2013 and so on and so on….there has to come a point when they get serious about building from within instead of giving up 5 players for 1 Cy Young winner who plays in Pitching Valhalla and now has elbow problems
Why is Jake Peavy Walter Johnson or Cy Young or even Josh Beckett? Peavys been to the post season and performed miserably

OK, just kidding. If you are sick of reading the articles, then don’t read the articles. Many (most) of them are just articles that someone writes because it’s a sexy topic and you’ll go and read it even though it has either A) no new information, or B) speculation on the part of the author.
There are only 2 people that really know what’ sgoing on herel; Towers and Hendry. Hendry, for his part, is pretty tight lipped about trades and the DeRosa trade proved. Towers seems to like to talk just to hear himself, and because of that he contradicts himself often.
My prediction is that he will or won’t be a Cub when he is or when he isn’t, but I know this won’t happen until Cub and SD ownership situations clear up.

is nothing will happen until the Cubs say so. It is in the best interests of the Cubs to wait this out. They have plenty of arms to look at in spring training. As they evaluate what they have or don’t have this could determine if anything happens with Peavy.

This off-season kind of reminds me of visiting the dentist, slow and torturous.
You wait and wait in the waiting room and when your name is finally called, you wait some more in the exam chair.
Then the torture of the exam begins and ends with that terrible word, CAVITY! Or if it’s really bad, ROOT CANAL!
Then the dentist makes you open your mouth as wide as you possible can and that’s not even enough so he stretches your mouth like you’re silly putty. Then the terrible sound of the drill begins!
Then, he gives you a toothbrush in your favorite color and tells you to have a nice day.
Alas, you leave the dentist with a stinking toothbrush, an aching mouth and what you really wanted was a lollipop!
Such is life!

Good god people get a grip
If you’re tired of reading Peavy rumors then stop reading about the Peavy rumors.
Either that or just make up some reason why it obviously won’t happen, like that the trades you read about are never the ones that happen or something, and then post something to that effect as a retort to anyone who brings it up.
This is not Brian Roberts part 2. This got much further along than the Roberts deal reportedly did, a rumor whose legs were lengthened by a bored media. In this case, most of the rumors we read turned out to be spot-on (again, if you believe well-sourced rumors), and it supposedly fell apart in the final stages. I think that gives it much better odds of resurrection.
