Peavy or Vitters?

I am very curious on what everyone thinks about this situation.  Should we give up Vitters (and others, obviously) for Peavy?  Personally, I would keep Vitters but either way we will still be good. . . . . . What do you think?

I don't know if anyone has done this yet but I figured I would put this out........Sorry if it's a repeat. . . . . . .And hopefully this last sentence will complete my 75 words and I don't have to write anymore words. . . .

The poll should read:

Should we trade Vitters now
for Peavy
or
trade Vitters after moving him to RF, then 1B, then have his manager rip his unready defense, then benching him and barely giving him ABs
for someone that looks suspiciously like Garret Olson.

Or

Trade Peavy who inevitably needs elbow surgery for Josh Vitters who goes on to hit .300 20+ HRs for who knows how many seasons in a row for the Padres, while Peavy becomes Kerry Wood 2.0

It can just as easily go that way

what???

since when are you a medical doctor? how do you know what peavy needs or what he will need you are a internet blogger who is a fan of the team. stick to that.

I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

by cubsluver22 on Jan 27, 2009 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

I was simply stating the otherside of his argument

how does he know Vitters will fail at the MLB level? Peavy was on the DL last year with elbow problems and is a power pitcher, so its not unreasonable to think that these problems will continue, with the worst case scenario being surgery

If youre going to limit blogs to people who know what a certain person or entity needs, then not many of us would be here

who cares

what vitters will do at this time. if he can net a cy young pitcher then bye bye vitters. so your saying if a pitcher of that caliber ever has elbow problems—dont get him?? itchers have sore elbows all the time.

I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

by cubsluver22 on Jan 27, 2009 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

Im saying...

Giving up 4 or 5 players, including our best hitting prospect, for Peavy might not be as sweet as it sounds b/c we might not be getting the Jake Peavy of the past few years b/c of his recent injuries/DL time and b/c of his stats away from Petco, and b/c we dont really “need” Jake Peavy, not with the staff we have, not with the division we are in…so youre giving up an awful lot for a luxury, not a necessity

And how are the Cubs supposed to rebuild the farm system when theyre continually trading away the best propects?

The Mets managed to get Santana without giving up their best prospect, Fernando Martinez…..so the Cubs should have similar leverage b/c they are bidding against themselves

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

by bren on Jan 27, 2009 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

with the assessment that Peavy would be just a “luxury”. With Harden on the Dl all the time and Z’s woes at times, you almost gotta have another top notch starter. I’m sorry sean marshall can be a fill-in guy or a long relief guy but I just dont wanna be depending on a bunch of unknowns.

I dont disagree that its not the smartest idea in the worl but with 1-2 maybe 3 years were done anyway regardless of just 1 player. were saddled with a whole bunch of crappy contracts and old players. were in a win now or wait several more years mode.

I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

by cubsluver22 on Jan 27, 2009 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, thats a good point

But the time Peavy spent on the DL is a red flag to me, no one knows for sure how deep he’ll be able to go in 09, and we should all be familiar with the plight of injured pitchers by now and how unreliable they can be

The Catch 22 , I suppose, would be by giving up Vitters, the wait several years mode could potentially be made even longer as the hitting prospect cupboards are bare with Vitters.

Any sort of resolution to this issue would be great at this point, but if we’re gonna se a no 44 next year, i hope its not Chad Fox

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

by bren on Jan 27, 2009 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

bren, I didn't say Vitters would fail;

I said the Cubs would mismanage him when they introduced him to the major leagues.

Tell me what is Vitters' ceiling and then probable level against Peavy's ceiling and probable

Vitter’s ceiling is Madlock (1/10 chance) or Bagwell (3/10) or Moreland (3/10)
he could bust or he could be a player like Atkins on CO

Peavy is a 80/20 top ten pitcher next two years, 70/30 top ten pitcher 3-4 years and 50/50 in 5 years at the age of 32

Peavy puts this team over the top like Maddux did to Atlanta in ’93

by bren on Jan 27, 2009 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

The Cubs are built to win now and not in 4 to 5 years.

If they were in a rebuilding year I could see not trading them but when your system is not that deep and they want to win now then you need top trade the prospects in my opinion.

by cubdreamer on Jan 27, 2009 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Understood

but when do you address the farm and the future, if we ignore it and go all out for the next 2-3 years and discard Vitters, then the team circa ’12 will be worse off and even further behind in terms of rebuilding, whereas if Vitters panned out, he could be a regular by ’12 and the key figure to the future.

I understand what youre saying, and your probably right, but they cant keep putting off the future-there has to be a plan besides relying on free agency.

Thanks for the update but I would

take a proven Cy Young award winner over a possible prospect.

by cubdreamer on Jan 27, 2009 9:52 PM CST reply actions

Perhaps

we should keep Vitters, forget about Peavy, since our starting staff is already pretty good, and sign another formidable pitcher to replace Marquis. The Cubs won 97 games last year but performed poorly in the playoffs. Peavy has been dreadful in the playoffs. Why not sign someone that can win us 12 games like Marquis did such as Jon Garland or some other free agent pitcher. It would be cheaper than taking on Peavy’s contract. That staff should get us back to the playoffs and hopefully the new offense will perform better and the same starters from last year (all still on the team) will perform better as well.

by JJDiesel21 on Jan 27, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Very sound reasoning

I would tend to agree, but it doesnt appear to be the case. I wonder if Marquis wasnt due to make almost 10M if he’d still be here, hes got to be a better option than Braden Looper or some of these other no 5s we’ve heard
