Fresh off the Heilman Deal: Cubs to sign Bako, looking at Looper, Wolf? Ebiru the new Onedec?
Fresh off scooping the Cubs' acquisition of Aaron Heilman, ESPN Radio's Bruce Levine has more info about the team's plans.
- Levine says the Cubs will sign backup catcher Paul Bako to a one-year, $750K deal once they clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The 2-for-1 Heilman trade takes care of that.
- The Cubs are still looking at Braden Looper and Randy Wolf if they aren't able to reignite the Jake Peavy talks.
- The Cubs have Juan Uribe on the radar as a bench bat and backup infielder.
EDIT: Uribe signs with Giants for 1M.

why in the world
do we need looper or wolf??
I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

Agreed
Marshall = Wolf
Heilman = Looper

Wolf was close to the dodgers according XM
and isnt Looper just another Marquis?

exactly
Looper is another Marquis which is the whole point. Marquis was one of the best 5th starters in baseball last year. The Cubs didn’t want his contract.

I thought the goal this offseason was to upgrade from Marquis
not make a lateral move, at best

pitching depth
Looper or Wolf in the rotation gives the Cubs pen the lefty they need right now which would be Marshall. Just Cotts isn’t going to cut it unless you are counting on Rich Hill.

Well, some of it may go to Lou's tendency (perceived or overwise) to having a LH backup catcher
In 13 of Lou’s 21 seasons as a manager, his backup catcher has hit left-handed.

I'm curious
I saw that last time it was posted, but no mention was made of the starting catcher’s handedness. By any chance did he have a LH starting catcher in those 8 other seasons?
by madcow256 on Jan 28, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I could look it up again,
but when I was researching it, it didn’t appear so. Jeff Reed started most games for the Reds in the 1990 season (IIRC), but for the most part, the starting catchers were RH.
Give me 10 minutes and I’ll have the list.

Blanco vs. Bako is a wash
Again, I can’t get terribly worked up over the insertion of Bako. He is well-respected, good behind the plate and works well with pitchers. Just like Blanco was. Neither was / will be in Chicago for their prodigious hitting.
by BLou on Jan 28, 2009 2:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks to Trey for the list
If we expect the backup catcher to make a difference in the postseason, that’s quite a stretch. How many ABs do you see Lou giving to Bako over Soto in the playoffs anyway?
There have been a lot of things the Cubs have had for the last two years. That doesn’t mean changing all of them will change our postseason drought.
by madcow256 on Jan 28, 2009 2:32 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I Doubt It Really Has To Do With A LH Catcher...
… and here’s my thought why.
Last year, Blanco lost a step or two defensively. Granted, he picked it up offensively, but the Cubs likely don’t want that at the expense of defense.
I think this is the reason that the Cubs did not want Blanco back as a player, regardless of price. That’s not what we heard in the media, but what else is Hendry going to say? Is he really going to say that Blanco’s defensive skills have degraded, thus hurting Blanco’s ability at signing somewhere else? Or, perhaps burning the bridge to bring Blanco back as a coach?
Come to think of it, have we ever heard Hendry publicly bashing any (former) player?
by initram on Jan 28, 2009 2:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Lost a step?
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but can you back that up with some stats? My impression from last season wasn’t that he lost a step defensively. Was his runners thrown out down?
I like to think Geo’s success was due to Henry’s mentoring. Why break up a good thing if it doesn’t cost more?

I really don't understand the Heilman deal at all
but if Levine is correct and the Cubs are looking for an MI/CI type guy, then why in the world is no one talking about signing Orlando Hudson, forget Uribe and let LBR and Miles back up?
Miles doesn’t have much time at 3B, granted, but unless ARam gets hurt, he won’t need to play many games there.
Jim Hendry, in my opinion, is not making this team better at all this offseason.

Heilman's professionalism
Contrary to the way Blou has painted Heilman, the NYT has only good things to say about the ND alum:
If Heilman loses the starting competition and winds up pitching in relief, I’m sure he’ll be disappointed. But he’ll handle that decision professionally, just as he did during his time with the Mets. Heilman purchased an ad in the scorebook sold at Sunday night’s annual awards dinner of the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. It read: "Playing at Shea before you folks was an experience I will always savor. Thank you for support."

G. Heilman wants to start
So would Hendry acquire a guy who has wanted to start for years and throw him back into the bullpen?
I guess we would only be interested in Wolf or Looper if G. Heilman was in the bullpen? Unless they are not counting on Harden for much…
And it would seem as if the Peavy trade is less likely if we are after Wolf or Looper.
