Heilman article in Logansport Newspaper.

I am originally from Logansport and am in town this weekend visiting friends and family.  My parents had the article laid out so I decided to scan it and throw it on the site, unfortunately the scanner is kind of old and hard to figure out...so I'm just going to throw the link up.  The write up is pretty good...you get to see him on a more personal level.  Also does a good job showing his love for the cubs.  Take a look...

One line in that story gave me a chuckle.
If Heilman does not win the fifth starter’s role in spring training, he could be utilized in the bullpen.

Could be used in the bullpen? What, are they thinking of making him another infielder?

Surely Heilman can hit better than Bako....

though that’s kinda like being the tallest midget

Heilman's a pretty bad hitter.

Now, as a reliever he hasn’t had chances to bat the last 3 years — only one AB since 2005.

But he wasn’t a very good hitter when he was starting, either. He is 1-for-44 in his career.

Even Paul Bako is better than that.

but he has had

3 years to practice, I am sure he is ready to start hitting those HR’s we traded for him to get.

LOL

Nice article, though. It gives you a different viewpoint on a major leaguer — sometimes we forget that these guys did play HS ball, many of them in small towns like Logansport. Thanks for the link.

Logansport

Small world. I happen to be from Cass County as well. I graduated from Lewis Cass in 1995. Logansport beat the crap out of us every year in baseball. I think Heilman pitched against us during my senior year ( I would have to check). It would be pretty cool to say a Cub has struck me out.

When did you graduate from Logan?

2003

yea, we never hadn’t lost to Lewis Cass in 50 years until my senior year…rain shortened game…We were pretty terrible that year. The year before we won 26 games in a row on the way to state, only to lose to Munster….Me senior year we were pathetic. Outside of me and 2 other guys no on else had any varsity experience. But yea, ol’ Lewis Cass, they’ve become quite the 2A powerhouse is sports. It would be cool to say a Cub struck you out, but not as cool as being able to say you got a hit off a Sox player. ( I was 1 for 1 against Clayton Richard). I actually had the best game of my life that day. Facing the would be state champs at McCutcheon I was 5-5 with 3 bombs. Of coarse they all came against their scrub pitchers because they knew we were bad. I held them to 2 runs through five. We were winning 5-0, then 7-2 and ended up losing 8-7. They brought him in after they took the lead. I led off with a single, I’m not quite sure how I made contact. He threw straight ched. I think he was hitting 93 that day, which is insane from the left side considering I’m a lefty as well. But yea, I chinked one off the end of the bat over 3rd. Pretty much my claim to fame.
