OT - Vick as Bears QB?
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/slezak/1363326,CST-SPT-carol06.article
You know how I'm always ranting about how off-field deeds mean nothing? I defended Bradley in this regard.
Not when it comes to animal cruelty. If Zambrano, Ramirez, Soto, Lee and Lilly were in a dogfighting ring, I'd want all their asses shipped out. Bring up half the AAA roster. Lose 112 games. I wouldn't care.
Let's just hope this is a hack practicing her hackery for a hack publication. Or that she drank too much over the holidays and needed a quick bit of hack.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

No, you're out of line.
If you don’t want to read the post, don’t read it. There are Bears fans here, it’s the middle of the week, and the post is CLEARLY marked off topic.

I will repeat this is a baseball blog. he already started another OT post about football, this could have went under there. there are well thought out baseball post on a baseball blog that get knocked down because of un needed post like these.

Eh, Vick's not for me...
First, this is almost certainly a fluff editorial piece.
But as you said, I’m not a fan of anyone who treats animals the way Vick did. That’s just inexcusable.
Aside from that though, I’m not sure he’s a great fit on the field anyway. Vick was (and may still be) an amazing athlete and runner. But he wasn’t a terribly good quarterback. Of course, that may have been simply due to the Falcons trying to make him something he wasn’t by forcing the West Coast offense on him. It may be that in the right system (one that doesn’t focus on quick timing patterns and short, accurate throws and instead allows him to drop back deeper, scramble more, and make plays downfield) he can still excel as a QB. And he’d be a perfect fit for the “wildcat” formation – you wouldn’t even have to replace him with a RB.
by SouthernCub on Jan 6, 2009 3:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I've been/was a huge fan...
but I don’t really know about this one.
There is no way he is in playing shape after he is released and I see no way that he gets by this without some sort of disciplinary reaction from Roger Goodell.
Some have said that he could possibly comeback as a return man, maybe even a running back.
He wasn’t the best passer to begin with but maybe that was because Atlanta, like the Bears, didn’t have any good targets. His best target throughout his Atlanta career was TE Alge Crumpler.
He’ll get a shot somewhere at being a QB again. I just don’t really know how’d I’d feel if he was a Bear. He definitely won’t be playing until he’s had months of training.
by EJThunder on Jan 6, 2009 3:41 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
How about this?
He can play for whoever, if he signs a contract stating that when he throws an INT, his coach gets to treat him the way he treated dogs who lost fights.
Seriously, I imagine he’ll get some looks as a wide receiver. And there is always Canada.
The worst beer I had was pretty good.

Talent
From a pure talent aspect, he makes a lot of sense for some teams. The Lions and Raiders come to mind.
Still, I just don’t see anyone, even Jerry Jones, taking the chance from a PR perspective if nothing else.

Very True
Even with all of the character issues in the league though, from a pr stand point, nothing has attracted this much media attention and public out cry as the Vick case in terms on NFL players. Guns, drugs, domestic violence, etc, are all widely covered, but usually die down after a public apology, rehab, etc…
Vick’s “dogs” were even on the cover of this week’s SI. This case isn’t going away anytime soon and IMHO even someone as souless as Al Davis wouldn’t sign him. Altough, I should say, nothing would surprise me.

Horrible PR Move
The Bears made such a media fuss over letting go Tank Johnson and Cedric Benson that to turn around and even publically consider Vick would be in poor judgment. Couple that with the fact that he isn’t suited to play in Turner’s Offense and I don’t see this happening.
IMHO he for sure won’t play this year in the NFL and I would be shocked (if not a little disgusted) if he gets the chance to play again.

True
Still don’t think a running QB would fit into the way that Lovie and Angelo have built the team. They rely on the run and intermediate passing game, which means more defenders in the box, thus limiting the mobility of your QB. Even if Turner weren’t there next season, the Bears don’t have the players to expand the field, even with a QB with mobility and arm strength such as Vick’s.

Am I the only one who thought Turner did an admirable job this season

Turner
I agree he did do a an admirable job this year. I especially was impressed with Hester’s progress and look forward to seeing how good he can be. However, I’m not the biggest Turner fan and don’t think he is the OC that can take the Bears to the next level.
by Tangled Up In Blue on Jan 6, 2009 5:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
For the most part I agree.
However I do feel that if Turner had a QB capable of making all the necessary reads/throws, that perhaps the offense would shine. It has shown flashes of explosiveness with Rexy airing it out to start ’06 and pre-ankle neckbeard this season.

by EJThunder on Jan 6, 2009 4:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It seemed like Lovie and Rivera
were at odds with one another. It was odd that after all that praise was heaped on him, he ended up a linebackers coach.
Of course that has been rectified now and he’s proving his worth as a coordinator once again.

because
he is regarded as one of the best D-line coaches in the NFL and coached with Lovie and Dungy in the Tampa 2 defense
by china423 on Jan 6, 2009 4:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
He is a great defensive mind and defensive coach. I agree with Kinky, the Bears should have held onto Rivera. Lovie likes to surround himself with his guys and Babich and Marinelli have coached with him before.
Keep in mind that Marinelli wasn’t solely to blame for the Lions being so bad. Matt Millen, IMHO, has set the franchise back ten years or more.
by Tangled Up In Blue on Jan 6, 2009 4:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
But if he goes winless as a head coach...
That might say something about how he goes about his job(s) as of late.
I agree that the players have to be held accountable to some extent but I feel like Rod had more to do with it.
Detroit’s defense / defensive line was horrible last year. You’d think that a head coaches area of expertise would show some promise and that he would care how his coaching his area of expertise.
by EJThunder on Jan 6, 2009 4:13 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not trying to let Marinelli off the hook.
He has proven to be an absolute train wreck as a head coach. I just think that some guys were born to be assistants, and Marinelli might be one of them. I know he put one of the worst D’s in the league out onto the field every week this year, but I don’t think his joining the Bears staff would be as horrible as it first appears.
by Tangled Up In Blue on Jan 6, 2009 4:16 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
Exactly. The Cubs have someone on their bench who’s contributions to the last 2 seasons as bench coach can’t be ignored but possibly is hot a manager in Alan trammel.
In football you have guys who are either not good head coach but good coordinators or college coaches like Dave Wannstedt or Pete Carroll.

Something I wrote at another blog
Let’s not forget though it wasn’t like Vick was at one fight that got busted. He was the financier of a fairly large criminal enterprise. Dog fighting usually brings out scum. There was probably other illegal activity going on his property such as guns, drugs, gambling, etc… It just wasn’t the killing of the dogs. If he gets released and is suspended for another year (likely), he won’t come back to the league until 2010. In 2006, he only had a passer rating was only 75.7 with a completion rate of 52.6%. In 2010, he wouldn’t have played in over 3 years, would be 30 years old and probably wouldn’t be in the best of shape. And let’s not forget that there were a ton of character issues before this happened. If you’re an NFL team, would you risk the backlash to sign this guy?
Old Style is the nectar of life.
by Mordecai on Jan 6, 2009 4:46 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, Mordecai.
I hate what he did, but he’s doing his time, and justice is served.
However, as a NFL QB, he was vastly overrated. He’s obviously not the smart of a person, which is critical in being a franchise player. Vick is just another Kordell Stewart, and that didn’t work out too well last time.
by Neifi Puppy on Jan 6, 2009 6:06 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I completely agree
he will server his time, but it won’t change the person he is.
He was almost smiling when he was publicly apologising, apparently thinking it was all he needed to do.
As for his performance on the field, he has a very strong arm, and uses it to an extreme. He overthrows.
A great deal of being a good QB versus a very talented one, is getting the ball to the receivers in a manner of which they can catch the ball. Vick could not do that with the Falcons and I think I would take Gross-man to Vick for Da Bears anyday.
