Sun Times Article Resurrects Peavy Trade

Here we go again with the Peavy talk.

This article was written by Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times.

This entire notion will rest on the new owners. Will they be ready to celebrate by trading for a Cy Young winner? Also what will happen with the third team that was to be involved? Will the Cubs be able to satisfy the trade demand within their own organization? How about the three decent quality pitchers received in the DeRosa deal?

Needless to say, here we go again.

I don't think

these type of articles are going to stop until Peavy is either traded or the season begins. I hope it happens. Adding Peavy to our rotation would just be ridiculous but I don’t see it happening.

Well

pretty much every major source has said there is still substance to these talks and I would imagine the deal gets done right after the Cubs are sold.

though...

kind of interesting to see this much back and forth between two teams that are up for sale in a murky financial climate.

I would go so far as to say the rumors will continue right up to this seasons trade deadline.

Substance?

No, there’s idle speculation on the part of the writers. For example, you said “I would imagine the deal gets done right after the Cubs are sold.”

On what basis do you say that? Where’s the info that tells you that? The Cub sale might happen next week. Do you think Hendry suddenly says, “OK, Kevin, let’s go?”

Deals don’t work that way.

Wittenmyer has been known to make stuff up before. I suspect this is MOTS.

I agree rec'd

The sale appears to be raising the need for cash in the deal and probably personally leveraging it, that is why the private equity group might be the dark horse in this bidding. The Ameritrade group might have personal reserves but this is suppressing the price.

Also Zell’s selling Wrigley Field is an interesting twist and will lower the price since it is a hard asset but also lower the cash needed to close it.

Either way that then says whether the new owners than either say they are willing to bank $150M in payroll this year and $161M minimum next year.

Hendry found a way to move some payroll this year

when many thought he’d be stuck with Marquis. He can do so again next year, if needed. One way is by not bringing back Kevin Gregg.

In the article, Gordo cites "those close to Hendry."

I prefer my sources a little more specific. And, as I mentioned in the other thread in which I posted a link to this same article, Wittenmyer names Guzman and Hart as candidates for the starting rotation, which makes me question how closely he’s really paying attention.

I'll let you in on a secret.

I am that source. At the time I e-mailed Wittenmyer on my Blackberry, I was in a checkout line at the Jewel and Jim Hendry was right in front of me. I asked him if we were going to get Peavy after all, and he said to me, “What do you think?”

OK, OK...just to show that I'm a fair guy...

…I was just reading Bruce Miles blog entry on the Marquis trade and it appears Jim Hendry really did refer to Guzman and Hart as possibilities for the starting rotation. So I guess I owe Gordo an apology for implying that he might not be paying attention.

Why Hendry/Lou would even consider blowing out Guzman’s arm again by putting him in a starter’s role, I don’t know. And why they’d look to Kevin Hart, who put up positively DISMAL numbers this past year (2.060 WHIP!), I don’t know either. But there you have it.

With the unexpected arrival

of Jeff Moorad as the probable new owner of the Padres, I now would have to think this deal is completely off the table.

However, had this situation not taken place, Peavy would have become a Cub, eventually — at least, by the trade deadline. The only way this could still happen is if Peavy forces their hand, and asks for a trade.

There’s still talk in this market that Peavy would like to be a Cub. But, so what? The situation has changed here, probably for the better — at least for the future of the Padres. (if we actually care)

Eh, I'd rather have Pettite on a one-year 12-15 million deal

I’m not sure if this is an aberration, but Peavy’s road splits last year include a 4.28 ERA. That’s pretty similar to Pettite’s 4.54 ERA, but in the NL East.

Pettite requires no prospects; Peavy requires the farm, essentially.

Pettite on a one-year deal does not affect the 2010 payroll.

Maybe he would take 12 mill just to spite the Yankees’ 10 mill offer.

Interesting thought

I spoke with a current member of the Mariners pitching staff who told me that Bedard is soft. He indicated that every pitcher has injuries like Bedard had and they pitch through them. He also indicated that Bedard didn’t have a torn labrum and that he fully expected him to have a good year in 2009 because it is indeed his contract year.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

Win now is a fallacy

With the resources this team has, they can always put a winner on the field, especially considering the division. But if you couple a few big free agent signings with a strong farm system, you will win championships. Look at the Marlins.

Peavy is not worth the salary + prospects.

I agree with Blaze22

the window of winning is short .. we have close to all the pieces together … we need Peavey , after all he is a cy young winner only two years ago .. secondly we need a great second baseman with speed , basestealing abilities , sure glove , great at turning doubleplays .. his name is Brian Roberts ,, plays for the O ’s … two more players I strongly think the Cubs could win it all

Roberts

is who Rosenthal is referencing. I expect rumors on Roberts to heat up, and we know a baseline on what it would take for the Orioles to make the deal, despite Kenny Williams protestations (Heyman and Kubatko indicated that the Orioles wanted Floyd plus one).

by toonsterwu on Jan 7, 2009 12:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That was debunked

Andy McFail couldn’t pick up the phone fast enough if the Sox were actually offering Floyd for one year of Roberts.

by dr stabbingworth on Jan 7, 2009 12:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no

Heyman came back yesterday and said it was legit, but talks broke down when the Orioles indicated that wasn’t enough. It’s somewhere on MLBTR. I’ll try and find the link later. Kenny Williams couldn’t get out quick enough to stop people from leaking I guess. He tried his best, going through Scott Gregor and others.

And I’ve made the case before – Gavin Floyd for Brian Roberts makes absolutely no sense for the Baltimore Orioles. Roberts is their best trade asset, a guy who will almost assuredly net two draft picks next year. Gavin Floyd is an end of the rotation starter who’s main assets are that he is cost-controlled and that he is somewhat young enough that some folks can imagine improvement. For a rebuilding team like the Orioles, a system that’s fairly deep in pitching, a team with options from AAA on down, I don’t think Floyd alone is enough to justify said move when the Orioles are fine financially and can spend to add an end of the rotation arm, like they did the other day with Koji Uehara. It just makes absolutely no sense for Baltimore to take that deal.

by toonsterwu on Jan 7, 2009 1:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Surprising

I guess I’ll have to disagree as to Robert’s worth, I guess. Thanks for clearing up the other part, though. I must have missed the update on that trade.

Peavy

Seems this has legs again. Reading between the line you gotta think Hendry will go hard after him. The other names mentioned…….Looper, Redding, etc. make no sense at all. They will probably get more than one year deals at money similar to JM’s money so why would Jim Hendry consider them? He already had those guys in Marquis and only had to pay him for one more year. Personally……..I’d rather see Brian Roberts here but I’ll be ecstatic if the Peavy deal gets done which now looks likely! The Cubs have alot of dead weight now that may be usable for another team. Pie is out of options with no room for him here……..we don’t need Ronny Cedeno (trade him before everyone realizes he sucks!)..and a crowded bullpen.

Pettite?? Nahhhhhh……………….how bout a run at Ben Sheets if Peavy doesn’t work out. Couldn’t he be had on a one or two year deal?

by plenz on Jan 7, 2009 11:49 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agree with your assessment, however

Sheets? IMO, the only way the Cubs can risk Sheets is if they move Harden. I don’t see being able to take the risk on two big game starting pitchers with health risks. Agreed on Pettite as he just turned down the Yankee offer of $10M, so that doesn’t make much sense.

by N Oakley on Jan 7, 2009 11:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

is Sheets a risk

on a 1 year deal? Maybe that would be enticing to him to get a shot at trying to show he can pitch through a season without too much trouble and then go get huge money in 2010

A Trade Is Next...

… because after Bradley signs, we are at 40 on our 40-man roster. Hendry wouldn’t want to start DFA’ing guys if he can swing a deal.

Guys to deal are: Pie, Cedeno, Hill, possibly Wuertz. All these guys are either our a job or out of options (or both). We know the Pads want a CF, a SS and lots of arms. We fit that bill, along with the prospects we picked up in the DeRo deal, as well as the clogged ’pen.

But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

We could just simplify things...

…and refer to the Cubs’ starting 2B as “Mikron Milenot”. It would save the effort of having to remember whether Miles or Fontenot is playing on any given day.

Belief in Fontenot

This might be a sign to Mike that his time is now.

by Cub In NC on Jan 7, 2009 12:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't expect Roberts

before the season starts. Too many 2nd base options on hand already.

Peavy, that I could see. Roberts, I think, could be revisited midseason, but personally, I think Roberts gets moved before the season starts.

by toonsterwu on Jan 7, 2009 12:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

A Roberts deal makes sense

if Fontenot goes to the Orioles as part of the deal — and I could see that happening. Then, Roberts starts at second, Miles is the super-sub and Theriot starts at short.

by elgato on Jan 7, 2009 12:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Some of the 2B options are likely to be traded if the Cubs make a big move.

I think, e.g. that the Padres might take both Cedeno and Fontenot.

Why?

They already have a better defensive SS that can’t hit, and I’d be surprised if they wanted to see LBR in their lineup fly out to right field in PETCO 3 times a game.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Greene was traded

Their depth chart shows Luis Gonzalez as their lone SS option. They might believe in his upside.

They've also got Edgar Gonzalez at 2B.

That’s a middle infield that’s crying out for Cub middle IF excess.

I would think

Hendry has another deal up his sleave and I truly believe it will be a multi player deal. Cubs have some parts to get rid of, now does that bring Peavy or Roberts who knows. But I would have to imagine that Henry would love to have one of them,
I would go after Roberts but dealing with the Orioles is borderline impossible. Roberts at the top of the Cubs lineup would be impressive.
I just can’t see the Cubs going into camp with the roster the way it is. Something will shake out.

by Cub In NC on Jan 7, 2009 1:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Don't think the Yankees would do that

They want to move someone, but unlike the White Sox when they dealt Swisher, they have no need to. Swisher has no issues with Joe Girardi, whereas it was clear that the White Sox were simply dumping Swisher. Short of it is, the Yankees can make a good deal on Swisher if they want … but I think they would prefer to keep him so that in 2010 they aren’t searching for a brand new OF. With several teams looking for OF’s, the Yankees should be able to move one of their guys before spring (probably Nady).

Beyond that, while I would’ve been fine with Swisher a week or so ago, I don’t see where he fits into our picture right now, now that Bradley is signed.

My sources...

according to my sources…(which are better than the sources that Hendry has) the Cubs will only make a push for Peavey if he becomes available again…and only if the Cubs could trade another player to be named…and if the source that I have is getting the correct information from his source, and his source is correct, then my source (who has no relation to the aforementioned other source’s source, then I believe my source’s source is right. Of course all this is speculation. See, my source was at the winter meetings doing laundry when his source was at the winter meetings getting a drink from the Bar, and that other source overheard an unnamed source talk about this deal that would send Peavey to the Cubs within the day or two…however all those sources were dead wrong. So, as you can see, take your sources source with a grain of salt….

That's the problem with America today...

everything is being “outsourced.”

Lets be realistic on what Hendry can do right now...

All i can see Hendry doing is trading off Pie,Cedeno and either Wuertz/Vizcaino . I’m not sure about those prospects from the Dero deal, but I hope the cubs dont trade them off for some crappy number 5 SP or some backup 1B, lol.

I can maybe see the cubs acquiring some number 3-4 SP (with a relatively fair salary). That would make sense considering its better if Marshall serves as a spot starter/LRP (i.e. Harden’s injury problems). I dont think Guzman can serve as a LRP because of his injury problems and Gaudin is still a question mark.

As for Roberts, McFail has been known to be a GM who ALWAYS tries to rip off the other team. Although Roberts is playing into the final yr of his contract, dont expect McFail to demand anything less than what he demanded last yr.

by Geo4MVP on Jan 7, 2009 5:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Brian Roberts won't be traded either

Orioles would have to sell too low on Brian Roberts. Plus Peter Angelos loves the guy second best next to fellow Greek countryman Nick Markakis. Roberts isn’t going anywhere.
