Brewers close to deal with Hoffman

Given he grew up in Anaheim and lives in SD I figured the Dodgers made sense but maybe the Brewers are willing to offer more than a one year deal.

So the Brewers keep up their "Sign The Homeless Reliever" program.

Last year it was Gagne, that failed.

Hoffman was once good, but he’s almost 42 and wasn’t very good last year.

Hoffman doesn't scare me at all anymore

I actually breathed a sigh of relief last year when I saw him come in. I thought the Padres had several relievers better than him. Apparently they believe that too.

Brewers are in for a big downfall...

Trevor Hoffman is reduced to throwing 84 MPH sinkerballs and cut fastballs at this stage. Yuck.

My goodness, how the fortunes of this franchise have turned sour in just a few months time. In case you haven’t been paying attention, the Brewers literally have no pitching once you get past the impressive Yovani Gallardo and the mildly intriguing Manny Parra. They are a staff of junkballers and retreads. Prediction — The Brewers have the worst team ERA in the NL in 2009.

What is bizarre to me is why they aren’t actively peddling Prince Fielder. He isn’t going to sign a long-term deal with them and his value will never be higher. Why not move him to a San Francisco or the Los Angeles Angels for pitching???

On the plus side, it should be extraordinarily easy to get tickets at Miller Park next year. I like that ballpark a great deal and it is only 1 hour from my north suburban home.

The Brewers won't have the worst ERA in the league.

But that’s only because the Nats and Reds are still in the league.

Reds

Compare starting rotations…
Brewers: Parra, Gallardo, Bush, Suppan and Capuano
Reds: Harang, Volquez, Cueto, Arroyo and Owings
I’d take the Reds rotation over the current Brewers rotation in a heartbeat. Hell, add Lowe to the Brewers and I’d still give the edge to the Reds. I know that Harang needs to rebound and Arroyo needs to be a bit more consistent but I think the Reds rotation could really surprise some people next year, regardless of their manager and home ballpark.

Yep

The Reds are a definite team on the rise. That starting rotation is solid. And Homer Bailey might still get his act together too.

But the team plays in a launching pad.

That’s going to keep their team ERA up.

Two reasons not to worry about Hoffman

1) Brewers still don’t have too many good enough pitchers that will give Hoffman an opportunity to close as much as they’d like.

2) If we could win games off of their closers the last two years on multiple occasions we can certainly do it with Hoffman.

The best thing about this deal

is that maybe, just maybe the Brewers believe that with this accquisition they no longer need to further address the back end of their bullpen. I honestly dont believe, as has been said before me, that he’ll be good or stay healthy all year. So I agree with Al, Gagne Part Deux

The Padres may be stupid

But not re-signing Hoffman was a good move. The fan base (what’s left of it) is still pissed off — they feel an icon should have ended his career with the Padres, since Hoffman didn’t want to go. The John Moores Padres may be not spending money (we’ll see about the Moorad Padres) but this was money saved — for the right reason.

However, even though Hoffman’s season wasn’t overly terrible — his second half was actually better than his first half, (which was brutal) there really wasn’t much gas left in his tank.

He may not be as bad as Gagne was, but his days of dominance are over.

yup...

… and he was pitching in an extreme pitchers park. Why he didn’t go to the Dodgers, another pitchers park, in favor of Miller Park is questionable.

The Dodgers didn't

tender an acceptable deal……the ’Crew was all his agent could muster…..he wanted 6-mil from the Padres…
