"Certainties" - oh the irony of it all

Something that I think would be fun to kick around is those things we consider "certainties" about the Cubs.   If we were to rewind to January of last year NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, could have envisioned the following.

-   The complete disintegration of Rich Hill.   We all thought he was a cornerstone of the rotation for years to come.

-   Felix Pie not working out.

-   The addition of Jim Edmonds of all players on the planet.

-   The horrendous second half collapse of Kosuke.

-   The total and utter collapse of the Cubs in the playoffs versus Los Angeles, where it can be argued this team played its three worst games of the season.

-   The cold business-like pink slip handed Kerry Wood.

-   The departure of Mark DeRosa.

-   The arrival of Milton Bradley of all players on the planet

===

So just for kicks and giggles what might be some of the stunning storyline developments that happen in 2009 that nobody in their right mind would predict???

Not Sure About...

… your Pie assessment. I highly doubt I was the only one who didn’t think he’d pan out.

I suspected DeRo may have been dealt, too.

I didn’t think that we’d need another lefty, let alone putting it in RF… again! That’s 2009, though. ;-)

Good list otherwise.

I wasn't sold on Rich Hill

I didn’t think he’d implode like he did, but felt that he was a bit of a headcase.

In that light

Carlos Zambrano goes 8-14 with a 5.32, alienates most of his teammates.

Man, I hope that’s wrong, but it seems plausible.

Uhhh......

Zambrano has seven seasons of sub 4.00 ERA pitching. 5.32 ERA doesn’t seem plausible at all.

Nor does alienating his teammates. If they took his side with the Michael Barrett thing, I think he has a good relationship with Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Theriot, Lilly, Dempster, etc.

Now he and Bradley could cross paths but Bradley tends to direct all of his anger OUTSIDE of the club.

Uhhh....

The point of the exercise was things that people don’t see coming.

As far as alienating his teammates, he’s already done that with a lot of them. Our pal Bruce Miles has written on more than one occassion that some of the Cubs are getting tired of his act.

Isn't this the same Rich Hill who was derided as being a

AAAA all star in the prior years. His struggles are not the greatest surprise.

Oh, I really disagree

After the second half of 2006 and 2007, Hill was going to be our third starter after Z and Lilly. Hell, Hill started GAME 3 of the 2007 NLDS against the D’Backs.

Hill went all Knoblauch in spring training last year — but in January, he seemed solid.

BLou just can't resist a chance to take a jab at Pie...

So even if Pie doesn’t fit on this list, he had to include him. I suspect that most reasonable people on this site would have said Pie was far from a certainty to succeed going into last year.

Just like it’s not a certainty that Pie will stink for the rest of his career. It’s certainly a possibility (and perhaps even a strong probability), but it’s not a certainty.

… I didn’t think that we’d be as patient at the plate as we were.

… Dempster’s performance.

C'mon, BLou, give yourself some credit.

YOU had already envisioned Felix Pie not working out at this time last year. Hell, earlier than that.

Oh, and I would add one: Who among us was even remotely familiar with Reed Johnson at this time last year, and who would have predicted he’d be such a key player on the ’08 team?

As far as ‘09 goes, I’m going to predict that neither Lou Piniella nor Milton Bradley gets suspended. But someone else will. Someone we’d never suspect. Someone named Micah Hoffpauir. During a pinch hitting appearance late in the game, Micah charges the mound Kyle Farnsworth style after ducking away from a high and tight fastball from White Sox reliever DJ Carrasco. Another riotous chapter in the north side-south side rivalry. Book it!

I started this for fun

No ulterior motive. It’s good sometimes to challenge the certainties we feel about the Cubs. For example, if somebody were to suggest at this time last year that Jim Edmonds would be a good addition to the Cubs he would have been summarily laughed at and burned at the stake. Ditto ANY reference whatsoever to 2008 being the last in a Cub uniform for Kerry Wood.

So looking forward??? I would make the folllowing wild ass “predictions.”

1. By June 1st Ryan Dempster has reacquired the name Ryan Dumpster.

2. Two BIG injuries hit the Cubs after a 2008 season when the team stayed remarkably healthy and a lot of players had solidly productive years.

3. Mike Fontenot turns back into a pumpkin.

by BLou on Jan 9, 2009 4:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Do you have any positive predictions?

Something about Rich Harden, perhaps?

RIP Ron Asheton (1948-2009)

by dat cubfan daver on Jan 9, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Rich Harden is a crapshoot

For as much as I like Rich Harden and his ability to dominate, even I am not dumb enough to predict the fortunes of his arm health. If Cubs can get 25 starts out of Harden I would be ecstatic. The good thing is that Harden is a black and white case. Either he is pitching and being very effective, or he is on the DL. There’s never been any in-between during his career. Rarely has he simultaneously been pitching in a rotation and sucking.

by BLou on Jan 9, 2009 4:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Very true...

a tantalizing case. So good when healthy, so frequently not healthy. Hopefully he can give us 25 starts and be available and dominant in September/October.

by SouthernCub on Jan 9, 2009 5:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Positive predictions?

Challenge the certainties I guess is BLou’s point

Like D Lee hitting into 20+ DPs is almost a certainty

But saying

D. Lee hitting into only 9 DPs all season would be a positive prediction

That would be challenging the certainties

Unless D.Lee only plays half the season

"Loyal? I'm the most loyal player money can buy."

by CubFreak on Jan 9, 2009 5:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Those are hardly wild predictions

None of those are very outlandish ideas at all. I’d hardly call Dempster and Fontenot certainties to reproduce what they did last year. Those pale in comparison to the suggestion that Edmonds might play (and play well) for the Cubs.

Also, I’d say 2008 being the last year for KWood was a very reasonable possibility. He was going to be a free agent. Remember – he wasn’t even certain to be healthy, nor was he sure to become the closer. There was the three-man race between him, Marmol, and Howry. Furthermore, we knew the budget was going to get tight, we knew Marmol would be pushing for the job, and we knew that Wood was a big injury risk. If Wood pitched well, he’d price himself out of Chicago (which he did). If Wood pitched poorly or got hurt again, the team would probably let him go anyway.

So do you want regular old predictions (like Wood being let go, or Dempster returning to crappy form, or Fontenot regressing), or do you want wild predictions (like Edmonds becoming a Cub)?

by SouthernCub on Jan 9, 2009 4:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good point

I fell off the wagon of the exercise.

Okay, here goes.

Wild predictions (i.e. less than 15% chance of happening, but...)

Alternating positive and negative

The Astros are the Cubs’ most serious competition in the NL Central.

Kevin Gregg is DFA’d before the AS break.

Joey Gathright ends the season as the starting CF and Ideal Lead-Off Hitter.

Carlos Zambrano is traded after a fight with Larry R.

The Cubs beat the Braves in the first round of the NL playoffs.

Donald Veal breaks out with the Pirates.

The Cubs beat the Nationals in the second round of the NL playoffs.

Al bans himself after a particularly nasty Theriot e-riot.

The Cubs beat the Indians in the World Series when Kerry Wood blows three saves and is accused of throwing the games.

This is a good topic

I assume these are things that would be stunning but also remotely possible (and therefore, somewhat predictable) …

1. Mark Cuban becomes the Cubs’ owner with a last-minute offer.

2. A Bradley injury prompts Lou to play Soriano in right, where he becomes a plus-defender. Bradley then becomes our regular left fielder.

3. Rich Hill has a great spring training and becomes our lefty setup man.

4. The Cubs re-sign Edmonds in spring training after Joey G. gets hurt. Edmonds understands he’s back as the fifth outfielder and a pinch-hitter, but he comes up big when injuries hit the other outfielders.

5. Pie, Cedeno and the prospects from the DeRosa trade are all sent elsewhere in a deal for someone no one is predicting — most likely a starting pitcher.

Some ideas

1. The Cubs trade Felix Pie and Kevin Hart for Jose Contreras and cash, and Contreras ends up with 10 wins as the 5th starter. Pie becomes an all-star in his third full season, and this deal goes down as the most successful cross-town trade in Chicago history.

2. Aramis Ramirez is injured and out for three months. The new third baseman is…………Alfonso Soriano. Micah Hoffpauir, Reed Johnson, and Joey Gathright combine for a .310/.355/.440 line in left field.

3. In an extra-inning game in July, Aaron Miles plays pitcher, Reed Johnson plays catcher, and Carlos Zambrano plays outfield. Of course, Soriano is already at third base!

4. In early May, Angel Guzman’s consecutive appearances add up to a nine-inning no-hitter with 7 Ks and 2 walks. He repeats the feat in September.

Great thread!

Positive:

In late April Lou finally snaps and puts Theriot in the leadoff spot, where he hits .318/.405. Soriano, meanwhile, goes on a 33-game hitting streak from the 3 hole.

Negative:

Dempster, Harden AND Zambrano all miss two turns in the rotation — AT THE SAME GODDAM TIME!

Positive:

Fukudome sets major league record for most assists and hits combined in a game.

Negative:

D. Lee sets major league record for hitting into unassisted triple plays

Positive:

Milton Bradley hits 45 HR and 135 RBIs. Narrowly avoids suspension because emergency blood transfusion saves Chris Carpenter’s life.

Negative:

He tears Soto’s arm off trying to get to Carpenter.
Positive:

Randall Simon returns! He takes Pie under his wing and Pie immediately adopts Simon’s strike zone and hits .583 in the month of August.

Negative:

Randall Simon eats Mike Fontenot.

I wanna play...

1) Geo falls into a Sophomore slump

2) Marmol has 40+ saves

3) Bradley only goes on the DL once

4) Soriano bats 3rd, stays healthy and wins MVP (40+ HR, 120 RBI)

5) Jake Peavy is a Cub before Opening Day

6) Fukudome becomes the everyday CF by ASB.

Someday we'll go all the way...

by BLou on Jan 9, 2009 9:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

God, it seems like everytime I make a positive prediction...

about the Cubs it blows up in my face but hope springs eternal so here goes;

Positives; Fukodome and Reed Johnson form an excellent platoon in cf.

Carlos Marmol puts up Mariano Rivera-like numbers as the closer (while Kerry Wood spends sunstantial time on the dl in Cleveland).

Milton Bradley wins over Cub fans everywhere with his best all around season (and actually gets some MVP consideration) . His fiery personality is also a welcome change in the clubhouse.

Now a few negatives;

Carlos Zambrano continues to be his own worst enemy (I know I’m not exactly going out on a limb with that one) and has another largely disappointing season.

Rich Harden is Rich Harden; devastating stuff but too much of a china doll to really make a big difference.

Mike Fontenot loses the starting second base job before the all-star break.

Jake Peavy does NOT end up with the Cubs.

4. A mid season trade for an outfielder to supplant Fonzy in LF (Mags?)
5. Another manager of the year award for Lou.
6. An MVP for Geo.
7. Difficulty in the regular season, but a narrowly won division championship over the upstarts frpm Ohio.

For last year:

I would never have expected the Cubs to march into Wrigley North and rape the Brewers for four straight.

Also at that venue seeing Z and Theodore go a combined 15 innings of no-hit ball against the same team.

For this year, in positives only, I’d love to see Theriot lead the team in doubles, Dome revert to form in showing patience at the plate if not outright hitting, and an injury-free basepath monster in Soriano.

So the prop chief promptly ground a new point in what was left. Totally changed the fight choreography…

That's baseball...

…and every year is filled with unexpected surprises. If it wasn’t that way, the game would be awful boring from year to year.

Rich Hill was no shocker to me. You could see his slow “mental” decline over 07 and he was showing no signs he had the capability to pull himself together. Hill is a prime example of how much of the game is making adjustments between your ears.

Pie was also not a surprise to me. He showed the year before he was struggling and why anyone (who follows the game) would think he was certain to workout, was not paying attention.

The DeRosa move was simply something Hendry had to do to fill gaps in the club. He hemmed himself in with no-trades etc on other players, and really had no choice if he wanted to acquire what he needed. We’ll see how it works out, but it certainly is not bad that he finally traded a player while they were at the peak of their trade value.

09 will have more surprises as every year does. Let’s just hope there are more good surprises than bad.

K....

Lemme look into my vaporizer crystal ball and see what I can see…

1. Ted Lilly winds up being our ace this season, racking up 19 wins. He also leads NL pitchers in extra base hits after he begins sharpening his spikes in the dugout between innings (ala Ty Cobb).

2. Dome starts the season at Iowa, but gets his swing back by May and winds up leading the team in OBP.

3. The Peavy deal doesn’t happen. Even in the middle of the season. (GASP!!)

4. Shark steps in for Harden in June, and closes out the season with a respectable 10-8 record.

5. Hoffpauir winds up playing 1B through most of August after DLee injures himself (while running to first to beat out a DP).

6. Marmol gets 45+ saves.

7. Cubs send five to the ASG. (Soto, Z, Marmol, Ramirez, Bradley)

8. Lou and Gameboard open a tea room down Clark. They have really good pastries.

My 2009 Predictions

1. After much deliberation, Lou agrees to bat Z and Lilly in the 8 hole. (Lou also agrees to let them DH in inter-league play)

2. Spellcheck begins the season in AAA and takes rotations in the corner outfield due to his “ups”.

3. Matt Clement is released by the Blue Jays in ST and picked up by the Cubs. Ends up in the BP when the rosters expand.

4. Future Prediction: Sandberg is Cubs Manager by 2012.

I doubt it...

…it’s tough to put a guy in a high pressure job like the Cubs with no major league managing experience, and it could be setting him up to fail.

Not unlike the mistake the Blackhawks made by making Savard (a fan favorite) their head coach before he was ready.

I suspect...

… Sandberg might be named to the major league coaching staff in 2010, which would help him get some major league coaching experience.

If Alan Trammell takes over for Lou after 2010, Sandberg could be made his bench coach, and then move into managing after that.

I think a lot depends

on 1) whether the Cubs win a WS title during the Piniella years;
2) the state of the roster and the potential need for a long re-build;
and 3) the wishes of the new owner.

i.e. we have no idea.

The author of this post is not a certified scout, doctor, agent, statistician, manager, or journalist, nor was he ever a very good player, though he tried very hard to be like Ryne Sandberg and was about as scrappy as it gets (in T-ball). Any opinion expressed above should in no way be confused with fact, truth, or reality and is hereby qualified in the following ways: 1) The author does not know as much about baseball as Lou Piniella. 2) The author does not know as much about baseball as Jim Hendry. 3) The author does not know as much about baseball as either Dusty or Darren Baker.

by DGU on Jan 11, 2009 1:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Your right...

…anything is possible, but we do know with a high level of confidence, that the Cubs will not go into a “major” rebuilding mode anytime soon. There is too much expectation now, and with the money they can afford to spend, they shouldn’t have to start from scratch.

Knowing that, I would imagine the objective choice would be to bring on someone who has a winning background at the ML level.

Well, you could have said that about the Yankees after they let Torre go.

And yet, they chose someone with only one year’s worth of managerial experience.

"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx

by Al on Jan 11, 2009 4:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Correct...

…but Girardi was NL manager of the year and he had several years experience on the bench with Torre. With that said, it was a little bit of a risk and we still don’t know whether Girardi was the right choice for the Yanks.

It looks like he will have some good players going into 09, but if Girardi doesn’t accomplish something in the next couple of years, he may be the top candidate to replace Piniella.

"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel

by MPH73 on Jan 12, 2009 11:42 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's kind of what I envisioned...

And the fact that he’s getting experience managing in the minors certainly doesn’t hurt. A question I was going to ask: Is being, for instance, a bench coach on a major league squad a bigger plus than managing an entire minor league squad? While its true that Sandberg may not be the NEXT manager of the Cubs, I think we could all agree that it’s a definite possibility somewhere down the road. Being a huge Sandberg fan growing up, I’d personally love it.

I would too

Everytime the Peoria Chiefs came to town to face the local River Bandits (aka Swing of the QC), the place was soldout. He’s always been a fan favorite. He actually interviewed for the Cubs managerial opening before Piniella was hired, which is how he got the role of manager in A and now AA. He’s got fire too, being ejected more times as a manager than as a player.

- Carlos Marmol pitches 200 innings out of the bullpen. His right arm turns to Jell-O, but he still throws the nastiest slider in the game.

- Derek Jeter is injured and has 15 plate appearances before the All-Star break, but is still voted the AL starter at shortstop. (OK, it’s not Cubs-related, but still might happen)

- Alfonso Soriano begins using a 42-inch bat, allowing him to hit sliders low and away.

- Derrek Lee grounds into the first lead-off double play in Major League history.

- Jim Hendry goes on the Ryan Dempster workout regimen and loses 50 pounds.

- The fact that it’s been 101 years since the Cubs won the World Series is mentioned by FOX and ESPN announcers only once per inning.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
