Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

5 teams down 20 percent of higher.

We're down 2 percent. Cardinals down 2.6 percent. White Sox down 7.2 percent. Brewers down 1 percent.

Texas and Kansas City -- go figure -- had the highest attendance jumps. Tampa (understandable) and Florida (inexplicable) had significant jumps as well.

The New K - or Kauffman Stadium - is magical.

I love it.

Take a trip. You’ll like it, too. Stop @ Arthur Bryant’s for the best KC BBQ, too, while you’re down here.

Was in KC in July

I was there when the Royals Hall of Fame opened during a weekend series between KC and the Rays. I think the “K” looks better than the stadiums in St. Louis and Cincinnati. I went to a Smokehouse BBQ place there. I was surprised with how good that barbecue was. I’ll eat at Arthur Bryant’s the next time I get up there. The best barbecue I’ve ever had was at the Rendezvous in downtown Memphis.

St. Louis

The Cardinals have the highest ticket prices of any small to medium size market in the major leagues. I’m not surprised that their attendance numbers are down slightly. The Cardinals need to draw fans from beyond the St. Louis metro area to be successful. They are still one of the most popular teams in the south drawing heavily from Arkansas and Tennessee. There weren’t as many fans this season willing to make the trip to St. Louis.

Now, take those numbers and eliminate the Mets and Yankees...

… who both moved to smaller stadiums in 2009.

Without those two teams the decline is 5.2%.

I think we discussed this earlier this year and the real worry are places like Detroit and Atlanta, both of whom contended for the postseason this year and both of whom saw significant declines.

COMERICA PARK....

I think it may have been only fans from rival clubs that kept attendance up. Cub fans packed Comerica in June for all 3 games . One other trip in Detroit a slew of fans from Cleveland were there . Gotta think the traveling fans helped the Tigers alot .

The economy sucks

I don’t think anyone expected this to not have an impact at the gate. I’d like to see the NFL numbers at the end of the season just so we can say we’re not alone.
