Dusty, TLR at it again

Sounds like they're all atwitter (but not on Twitter, alas) about whether the baseballs were too slick in last night's Cardinals-Reds game. Plus whether Bronson Arroyo pine-tarred the balls he was using

Read all about it, courtesy of Hall-of-Famer Hal McCoy in the Dayton Daily news. (Also one of Hal's last stories for the paper; he's retiring, not entirely by his own choice, at season's end.) It all reminds me of the epic, five-game Cubs-Cards series in September 2003 at Wrigley, when Dusty and TLR were at each other's throats.

My two least favorite managers in baseball

and I have no issue taking Dusty’s side here. LaRussa is the overseer of some of the games greatest cheaters, I don’t know where he gets the idea that he can accuse others of cheating.

Also loved the reference to the Julian Tavarez thing by Dusty, for one day I can put my Dusty issues aside.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Yep; LaRussa's being more than a bit sanctimonious here.

By the way, here’s the link in a convenient click format!

Thanks, SB

I wasn’t sure how to do that; thought just pasting the URL would get the job done.

I hate the man

But LaRussa is gameplanning here, and doing it well

  • He doesn’t give a damn about Dusty or the Reds. He DOES give a damn about the psyche of Smoltz going into the postseason.
  • He is making sure the umps are looking for this kind of thing going into October.

Genius. Freaking genius. Dusty is playing Connect Four while LaRussa is playing 3-D Chess against Spock.

There is no such thing as an ugly female breast

by Worf on Oct 1, 2009 5:55 PM CDT reply actions

Up until last night,

Smoltz has owned the NL. He’s a seasoned vet with a proven track record and has succeeded in any and all pitching situations, so I have a tough time believing that Smoltz got rattled by one tough outing.

Metal sharpens metal.

And this guy right here understands and knows what leadership is all about: The coach, the hall of famer......... Dick Butka! George Ryan

Then again you might have a tough time believing that Smoltz

would resort to petty excuse making.

Tony LaRussa is such a bitch.

Always whining about something.

As much as I hated Dusty as our manager, I love that he threw it right back in LaRussa’s face with the Tavarez comment. Reminds me of that series in Chicago late in ‘03 when Dusty started yelling at LaRussa from the dugout. Ahhh, good Dusty memories… there aren’t too many of them!

Maddux Vs LaRussa

Ok because I can never resist the opportunity to tall a Maddux story, in a Cubs/Cards game I think in 06 but could have been 05, LaRussa asks the ump to inspect the ball since he claims to suspect Madog is doctoring it, ump looks, ball is fine, a little later in the game TLR asks the ump to look at the ball AGAIN and of course there is nothing on it. After the game some of the Cubs and I believe Dusty ( who also was upset while it was happening) criticize him for disrespecting Maddux for asking to look at the ball TWICE . Maddux’s reaction ? He explaines that the 2nd time Tony asked the ball had actually just hit off the wall for a double and Tony just wanted to make sure the ball was not damaged ( he is more or less laughing while saying this). Tony is whining
jerk.

Mark Buehrle also accused Maddux of cheating in 2004 or 05 I think

If I’m Dusty I am asking for the ball to be checked every inning next time the Reds are in Busch.

Jeff Cirillo accused Maddux, too.

And Ned Yost told him to shut the hell up.

I like Maddux's response best.

He had fun with it and he won the game.

The STL Reaction

Pine Tar Redux

I tend to agree with the first poster in the linked article…make a big deal out of this but don’t give a shit about the WS game in 06. In the end, it did not matter since the won the series anyway.

TLR is always about gamenship that will give his team an advantage at a later date….I was actually surprised that TLR did not throw at MB early in the season but I guess he assumed that was a trainwreck that did not really need his assistance

I have never understood how La Russa can get away with this crap and still get so much respect and admiration from the media and around baseball fandom. It really boggles the mind.

I love Dusty's last comment...

Funny how the Cardinals accuse other teams of cheating.

That makes me think they have some funny business going on with their pitching staff.

Hey, it's a new century!

TLR likes to aggresively

be out in front of anything, whether it’s true or not. He’s looking for any edge and doesn’t give a damn what people think. I guess you can’t argue with his success, but i just dislike how his handling of pitchers has changed the game — not necessarily for the better.

Thinking on it now

I believe this was an attempt by TLR to take some of the heat off of his offense which up till yesterday had been scuffling the month of September. It puts the media focused on mudgate and the coaching staff and away from the players.

I agree...

…LaRussa has a little Mike Keenan in him in that he likes to over blow these situations to try and create an edge. At the very least, he keeps his players on their toes.

I agree about his use of pitchers as well.
