Rob Neyer quotes a Detroit-area blogger who proposes such a deal. Bonderman's been pretty bad the last two years, but... maybe. Discuss.

I'd trade Milton Bradley for three of those new black tacos from TACO BELL.

But seriously, we don’t need a pitcher. According to Fantasy Pitch F/X (the best site for all MLB-things injury-related), Bonderman had shoulder surgery about 17 months ago. He’s about a career average pitcher with two years of better-than-average performance. Then again, FanGraphs tells me his WAR is decent, but his Babip isn’t all that great (.317).

In summary: I don’t really care. Get anything you can.

I hope saying that this taco looks disgusting

doesn’t bring up charges of racism.

Yes please

AL pitchers general do better in the NL, maybe we can swing them picking up the tab for D-train too, I know I ask for too much.

How long till someone posts that this type of trade is racist?

Sure, why not.

I would prefer a bat. It will be an interesting few months. Maybe the Cardinals will now panic and make a hasty trade and want more bats, more lefties. I say Wainwright for Bradley, thats all.

A move to the NL certainly couldnt hurt

just get rid of this guy and then fire Hendry

Hell no

We do NOT need another pitcher. I would rather have an overpriced underproducing position player.

I don't understand this perspective.

If we acquired Bonderman and determined that he was likely to be healthy for the better part of 2010, then we would be in a position to trade a pitcher like Randy Wells for a player we do need.

I view trading Bradley like the draft – you take the best player you can get (and in this case for as little cash as possible), then you make it work.

Or, let Rich Harden go.

I agree with DGU. If the Tigers are willing to take the deal — do it.

What are you talking about?

I would rather have an overpriced underproducing postion player too, but I would not rather have an overpriced underproducing position player who the team, the manager, the general manager, and the fans all dislike. I would rather see us acquire most anyone than keep Milton. Except maybe Paul Bako. Actually, no. Give us Bako.

A team can never have too much pitching

Get what ever we can for Bradley, I don’t care as long as we don’t take on another albatross contract or have to pay the remainder of Bradley’s contract, just get rid of him.

You have to ask yourself...
“Self? Who would be easier to trade – Bradley or Bonderman?”

 and then act accordingly.

Right now, I’m believing about half (if that much) the smoke I’m seeing about being able to move Bradley so I still think it will be a challenge. Whereas if I were Detroit (or Tampa), I think it’d be relatively easy to trade Bonderman (or Burrell) if I wanted to.

So that tells me if Hendry can swing a deal for either of those two, he should do so with whoever says yes first. Later on in the offseason, or even into spring training, if Bonderman (or Burrell) turns out to be not so good a fit with how the Cubs are shaping up, it ought to be easy enough to move them elsewhere for whatever we might need (or prospects for the future).

Agreed!

1st order of business is trading Bradley to whoever says YES and worry about the pieces later…. Getting rid of him without just having to outright release him is a win by itself.

This is shortsighted.

If there are multiple teams interested, work them against each other to get the best deal. Milton being on the team up until the day before Spring Training will not hurt the team in any way. Why pass up on getting some value back just because fans hate him?

by madcow256 on Oct 11, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, it would hurt the team to have him in spring training.

It’s pretty clear that most of the Cubs want nothing to do with him any more. Plus, there would be a media circus.

He’s got to be gone by the time of the convention.

by Al Yellon on Oct 11, 2009 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I said the day before Spring Training

I recognize it would be a circus. Hendry should be working to get what he considers the best possible deal, and not just accepting the first bag of balls we’re offered. Bradley may be a nut and a bad fit for this team, but let’s not let that stop some other team for overpaying thinking they can fix him.

by madcow256 on Oct 11, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry...

… I thought you meant DURING spring training. It would still be better if he were gone by convention time — otherwise THAT turns into a circus, too.

by Al Yellon on Oct 12, 2009 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions

I've never been to a convention

But I imagine that would be interesting, to say the least. It would still probably be fairly raucous if Bradley were traded for someone like Burrell who would seem to have no real place on our roster (assuming no followup move).

Hopefully we can find a way to flip Bradley into a usable part or parts before then.

any comment about

the article out of Tampa Bay saying that the Cubs are pushing for a Bradley for Burrell?

by GHCF2314 on Oct 10, 2009 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

hrm...

Bonderman and Willis together make about the same amount in 2010 that Bradley will make on the rest of his deal. Trading for the two of them may make more sense from the Tigers’ perspective.

There are lots of options for a Bradley-to-Detroit deal, or a 3-way deal with Bradley going to TB and Burrell going to Detroit. I think the Cubs involve the tigers in their offseason plans at some point this offseason.

by Shawn Domagal-Goldman on Oct 10, 2009 11:42 PM CDT reply actions

lets hope

hendry does not spend all winter trying to get rid of this guy. all these teams showing interest are probably expecting the cubs to eat his salary. they know how badly the cubs want to lose this guy.this guy. i think all the teams should smarten up and not sign this guy. a spoiled bitter human being who should be forced to get a real job.

by NOMAR on Oct 11, 2009 6:25 AM CDT reply actions

There's no way the Tigers take on Bradley (aka: "The Headache") under ANY conditions- even free.

In a nod to the late longtime Freep reporter George Puscas, I’ll even bet a “yard of kielbasa” on it.

Tigers’ GM Dave Dombrowski wouldn’t make such a deal. Tigers’ owner Mike Illich wouldn’t OK such a deal and Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland wouldn’t stand for Bradley’s “aura” in the clubhouse.

Geez, you think Jim smokes a lot of cigarettes now? The guy would be dead of smoke inhalation by the all star break. And the players wouldn’t care for him either.

Gameboard wants less media scrutiny. He won’t get it in Detroit. Believe it or not, the Detroit media market isn’t some backwash of rubes. They would be just as, (hmmm- what’s the word I’m looking for?) VIGILANT as Chicago’s own media with respect to their reporting on Mr. Bradley. Let’s see how far his act gets with Drew Sharp or Mitch Albom.

Bradley’s comment about wanting to only play nine innings so he can get out of the ballpark as fast as possible wouldn’t play any better in Motown, where a lot of folks put in very long days (those who are lucky enough to have jobs). The FANS of the Tigers wouldn’t put up with his “me first” nonsense and would roast him like a Christmas chestnut for an effort like that.

Gameboard would LONG for his “SUNNY” days in Chicago…

Anyone want to take me up on my original bet?

I could see that

Right now the only sport team with anything in Detriot is the Tigers. Maybe a better fit for Bradely would be out on the Left coast, say like Seattle. I could see the Mariners take him. It is alot more relax out here, the Seahawks are the big draw, heck I even think the MLS team is a high rank than the Mariners. The media is more laid back, and I would say the amount of race problems are smaller here than other places.

Make the Trade!

Okay, I don’t think much of Bonderman, but what the heck can you expect to get for Bradley and that fat contract? Maybe, Bonderman can turn things around in Chicago. I give him about a 25% chance of doing that, if he comes to the Cubs. The main thing is to dump Bradley.

As I posted in comments to Rob's story

I’d rather them trade Bradley for Ordonez, but I can’t say the Tigers would be wise to do so. I bet we could get rid of Bradley for Dontrelle Willis though! Full salary swap, no questions asked.

by Bradsbeard on Oct 12, 2009 9:08 AM CDT reply actions

That might not be a bad idea.

Willis is still pretty young. If he can get help for his psychological problems, he could still have a decent career — see what that kind of help did for Zach Greinke.

Gary Matthews Jr

Makes the same amount of dough over the next two years as Milton. He can play centerfield and at least the Cubs can get “SOMETHING” out of $20 million blown on Bradley.
