If you had a choice

(I noticed a typo and I feel like a dork...I corrected it, all is well now!)

As the weather rapidly deteriorates in the Midwest (yet another reminder the regular season has come to end), I contemplated about which player I would like to have a conversation with. I still have not narrowed it down, so for my first (and rather brief) FanPost, I thought I would throw the question out to anyone who is so inclined to answer -

Which player on the 2009 roster would you like to have an in-depth (off the record) conversation with?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Not too hard to guess who I would pick otherwise.

Um er I did actually stumble on his wedding registry

which I mentioned before. However since I spend what little money I have on tickets and it was password protected in terms of specific items , I am afraid Sam and his wife will have to make do without a gift from me. I imagine he would be an interesting guy to talk to given his background but I would like to grill him on that stupid necklace and the baggy pants look. I expect more of a Stanford grad.

I wonder if it's the same girl from 2008

He was with someone at the Cubs Convention that year. I only remember this because it was the Sunday autograph signing and she kept on giving him looks like she wanted him to go…but he couldn’t.

Usually I wouldn’t have recognized anyone around the area but she stood out.

by ak123 on Oct 12, 2009 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Since they have been a couple since HS

I hope it was the same girl. She went to Princeton and works in banking so as Sam does not have your typical baseball player background, his wife does not have the typical baseball wife background.

Well then probably the same

I couldn’t pick her out in a crowd…I wasn’t paying that much attention.

But he stayed and signed for everyone (I think he was the last guy). A lot of people were in line that morning.

Who knows, maybe she didn’t think he’d be busy for the whole weekend. I’m not judging, it was just an observation.

I did not mean anything negative.

I just meant it should be the same lady. I find it very sweet they have been together that long. Sam is a cute guy but I really do like him for his glove not his body. No harm in looking but if he did not make those amazing catches and have that patience at the plate , I would not care what he looked like.

I don’t mind following Sam’s academic pursuits , great defense etc but I don’t think his wife
really wants to be a public figure ( her last name was actually removed from some sites but this being the internet it can still be found). I hope they enjoy a long and happy married life but she is clearly determined to have her own career.

Ryan Dempster

From all that I’ve heard, he’s a very social guy, extremely friendly. He’s been through a lot too, from recovering from surgery and dealing with family issues.

by dmlichte on Oct 12, 2009 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Completely Agree

From all the interviews I’ve seen and articles I’ve read, he appears to be a very funny guy; however, and more importantly, he has a way of articulating the atmosphere on the field and in the club house better than any player I’ve ever seen interviewed. I think he would be able to give a real good explanation as to what happened to this 2009 team if he opened up in an off the record conversation.

Really really nice guy

I spent the day with him when he shot stuff for us at WWE 1 1/2 years ago. He, Howry and Fontenot came to the show. They were all really nice guys.

I think earlier that day Fontenot actually did an interview with Al for BCB.

Out of the three (who were all down to earth great people), Dempster was by far the friendliest, most out going and was welcome in doing anything we asked. True professional.

Because we talk baseball and I’ve shown him this site. That’s why it was embarrassing.

He obviously didn’t transfer the person over but for him to call, that’s a little crazy! I had Al remove all my posts before.

I actually think the guy who called was pissed that I had WWE pull down an illegal video he was linking to of a Pay Per View video clip with Soriano. Sorry, that stuff costs money, even if you’re Cubs fans it’s in my responsibility to report anything like that.

I was all for this until you limited it to 2009 Cubs.

First, my purpose of selecting these persons is to learn more about the game of baseball, a perspective I wouldn’t otherwise have.

My Cubs selection:

Somebody like Bobby Scales probably has enough stories about the game of baseball to last me the rest of my life. I think of a Crash Davis type of guy when I think of Bobby Scales, and I’m sure he could teach me more about baseball than just about anybody else on the team. And he would be humble as he went about it, too.

My overall selection:

Charlie Manuel seems like a guy that I could learn a lot from. I know he has coached in the Japanese leagues, was good friends with Ted Williams, and has now coached a World Series Championship team. Works for me.

I'd take Reed Johnson

I’m sure we’d go hang out after the conversation, because he’s a cool cat… and let’s face it, so am I. As we walked toward our destination, he’d tell me about something baseball related, and I’d quickly change the subject to strippers and mutton chops, then he’d get slightly embarrassed and change the subject again to riding coach on a plane and defusing IEDs. I’d get flustered and start talking sternly about how we need to find ourselves a local Spearmint Rhino and hire a feisty dwarf to deliver the dollar bills to the ladies FOR us, for fear of the paparazzo.

He’d give me a look like he should probably have taken a lesson from Morgan Ensberg and carried a weapon at all times, then tell me to go without him, and he’d leave. And dammit, I WOULD go without him – though without the dwarf either (who can afford to rent one during these tough economic times?) – and I’d still enjoy myself…. BUT, sure enough, he’d come back and find me, a primordial dwarf in each hand, and tell me he was sorry and knew I was just looking out for his sanity and well-being.

We’d leave at 9:45 am, and go our separate ways. He’d never contact me again, nor would I try to contact him, but he’d tell his grandkids about it some years later and say, “That dude… he made me whole again. I wouldn’t have become President of Baja California if it weren’t for PacificCub inviting me out that night.”

Joke’s on him, though. I actually will have been running most of the cartels in Baja during his administration and vaguely undermining his authority.

I have heard a lot of people say that when you get Lou away from the media, all the stuttering, and the “Look….” and the “Well, whaddya want me to do??” all stops, and he becomes one of the most intelligent baseball people to talk about the game with. I would love to have one hour, off the record, and no holds barred with Lou to discuss the last three years and what has really gone on off the field. Oh, and I’d have to ask about the Bronx Zoo Yankee teams of 1977 and ’78 too.

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
